I'm due to go to the Caribbean on the 20th September. Should I be worried? Looks like Helene is the one I need to be worried about

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,659 ✭✭✭Darwin

You will be arriving after the event, unless something else appears between now and then. Helene is heading North then likely North East towards the Azores. Isaac is heading west in the general direction of Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique and is forecast to arrive this Thursday as a tropical storm, not a hurricane. Keep an eye on local news in your destination and on this page:

Super Typhoon Mangkhut could graze the Northern part of the island of Luzon in the Philippines before moving past Taiwan and on towards the Hong Kong area.

A thought popped into my head when watching the news report on Florence.

They say a million people have been told to evacuate the area.

Where exactly do 1 million people actually go when they are told to leave?

Are you treferring to Florence heading to the Carolinas?

Tropical Storm Olivia is weakening on the way to Hawaii, Florence is causing evacuations.
(Many go to stay wth people they know, there'll be various other forms of accommodation including shelters in safe areas.)

Helene will be nowhere near Caribbean so I presume you mean Isaac.

Issac should be gone through Caribbean this week it will definitely be gone by the 20th unless your in its direct path ie Central America. Nothing to fear from that unless it stops and churns out rain or strengthens which is remote based on current models. Having said that it’s going over very warm waters this week so I was a little surprised (and relieved) it’s not expected to strengthen.

Unless something new appears you should be fine for your visit. Pack the suntan lotion :)

Getting even busier. And potentially more waves from Africa later.

And Joyce has been named. We now have 4 active cyclones in the Atlantic basin with another to follow in <24hrs.

Subtropical Storm Joyce Discussion Number 1
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL102018
    500 PM AST Wed Sep 12 2018

The strong low pressure system which the NHC has been monitoring in
the north Atlantic for a couple of days has developed a cyclonically
curved band of deep convection near the center, and scatterometer
data indicate that the winds are near 40 kt. Since the system is
still vertically stacked with an upper-low, it is then classified
as a subtropical cyclone at this time. However, the cyclone is
gaining organization while it is acquiring tropical characteristics.
The NHC forecast calls for Joyce to transform into a tropical system
in about 12 to 24 hours. Since the ocean is warm, some slight
strengthening is possible during the next 3 days. After that time,
Joyce will be over cooler waters and should then be absorbed by a
    larger extratropical low.

Joyce has been moving southwestward or 225 degrees at 5 kt, steered
by the northerly flow around the subtropical high which has been
steering Florence and to west of the mid-latitude trough which
is forcing Helene to recurve. In a couple of days, global models
indicate that the steering pattern will change as the trough
amplifies, and Joyce should then turn toward the northeast with an
    increase in forward speed.

Looking at images of towns in Northern Luzon, I have a feeling this is going to be tragic.

Sadly it does look like Mangkhut (Called "Ompong" by the Philippines) will make landfall over Northern Luzon.

Mangkhut is super typhoon's Haiyan cousin, not far off the record breaker. It is going to be so devastating.

CNN have decent coverage of Manghut there this evening, people taking shelter in what to me looks like huts? Can't imaging the horror of being there tonight.

Manghut passed just south of Hong Kong this morning and brought a 205 kph gust to Cheung Chau (72 m amsl). Hitting Macau now.

28W Trami looks like hitting Taiwan as a strong typhoon later this week.
