Just a follow-up on last weeks photos.
The Renault has survived so far, although the shell/roof is out if shape so really only for parts.
Low mileage, though.
Its been joined by a fairly straight W123. (still with its painted hub caps)

Thanks for the update from Cavan.

That Renault was a loss to the classic fleet.
It looks like it was recoverable until they damaged it in the lifting.

The Merc might be salvageable.

Those places are depressing when you see the waste of resource that underlies our motor trade,

I bought an 83 Starlet in 94. for 100£. Exact same colour as that. 30,000 miles. The OH told me change the colour or get rid of it. Luckily my brother had a few litres of Ford Venetian red in the workshop. We put another 70.000 miles on it till the drivers door fell off at her grandmother's funeral. Its great to see 90s cars coming into classic car events now.

Great to see a last of the line 1994 Granada still on the road.

And the JDM Levin (I think).

The continuation of the classic car thing by having new people come into it - depends on embracing newer "modern classics".

This is because people are more likely to embrace the cars they grew up with or started driving in etc.

A "boy racer" of today is far more likely to get into the classic car scene when he matures - when it is welcoming the Altezza he will likely still be fond off even if he stops diffing it at the local cross roads.

To your point, the funny thing is the likes of AE86, Altezzas etc will be much sought after when the 20 year old is a bald/fat 50year old remembering his youth.

AE86 already there arguably - they have both a rally and a drift heritage

I think its a regional thing too. A Carina II would get a lot more looks at a show outside of Dublin than it would at something like Terenure or St. Columba's

One thing is that as we approach 2000 (in Old Car terms) we are hitting cars that were engineered to last so much longer.
Outside of insurance screwing people in older cars, there is no surprise in seeing a 2000 passat/mondeo/corolla etc being driven as daily drivers still

Youve still got your slightly unusual cars to consider though....

Integra DC5, Peugeot 406 coupe, Alfa 156, Alfa GT coupe (the modern type of 2005 to 2007 type era).

Focus Mk2 STs and RS are another one to watch for - lovely 5 cylinder noise in a FOCUS.

Mazda RX8 are a car of intrigue - with that rotary engine. For a hobby take it to shows car the rotary engines flaws as a daily driver are less important.

And your E46 6 cylinder 3 series regardless of whether an M3 or not.

I was recently looking at some of my car mags from circa 1993 and it struck me that the cars that were featured in the new car mags (What Car, Autocar etc. ) are now a similar age to many of the cars featured in the classic mags (Practical Classic, Popular Classics etc.) A 1993 Mondeo is now as old as a 1967 Cortina Mk2 was in 1993. I find this a bit scary. Time flies, we get old and Ford Mondeos become classics!

The Mondeo in particular seems like such a modern and competent car . There is an article on the design and engineering of it in this months Practical Classics mag. It says that the car was banned from banger racing events as it was too strong and doing too much damage to other cars - no doubt it was a very strong and safe car for the early 90s but I 'm still dubious about it being banned like that.

Not that many Mk1s left on the road now. It's a year or two since I saw one although I did see a 1997 facelift car (mk 1.5?) recently in Monaghan
