So came across a query yesterday on FB where someone was asking do they wrap or unwrap the Santa presents for their children.

I know growing up for me it was always unwrapped, but a fair majority said they wrapped them - for the surprise element.

So what's it like for you, was it always wrapped or unwrapped for you growing up or do you do the wrapped or unwrapped presentation with your own families.

Unwrapped for me. We each got a cushion on the couch that was designated to each one of us.

Black bags, boxes and sometimes the fancier bags depending.

Oh, wrapped definitely, and each with a sticker for the names of the kids. It might be a pain to wrap them all, but it’s the element of surprise and the anticipation on their faces that make it worth the effort. I know we’re all different but Christmas for me wouldn’t be the same without wrapped presents under the tree.

Absolutely always wrapped! As a kid I didn't open presents until after dinner and we usually had dinner about 5 so the day always seemed longer in a good way. Now I wrap all Santa presents but they're opened first thing.

Unwrapped sorted by area with the Christmas stocking on top of the pile!!

Always wrapped in my house. Even in photos of other families I've seen the presents were always wrapped.
I was honestly amazed to find out that people's Santa presents weren't wrapped.

All the things under the tree wrapped. The bits and bobs in the stocking unwrapped.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

If you can't be arsed wrapping presents for your kids then you might as well just leave a few All4One vouchers and an open Argos catalogue under the tree.

Unwrapped for us growing up & we do the same for our two too. Each have their own little pile, just as we did as kids.

We wrapped our kids one year (including a bicycle!)

It was worth it for that year, but not enough to make it a habit. Nice change from the norm

Depends on the size. If possible/practical to wrap then is.

Santa presents opened first thing as soon as they wake up, all other presents after dinner.

Ours was always unwrapped and anything that needed assembling was already assembled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,238 ✭✭✭jellybear

Always unwrapped and left in little bundles.

Will be doing the same for our little boy :)

Growing up in a household with 5 kids, Santa's presents were never wrapped. We each had a space on the sofa that was ours. Family presents were wrapped under the tree. I have fond memories, Santa's presents in the morning, family presents after dinner and a Christmas movie in the evening. I know I'll be trying to instigate that with my little one.

    Always unwrapped and assembled
I have no brothers or sister so no need to put into bundles

I don't think mine were wrapped, but I'm not 100% sure, to be honest! The old memory is not what it was. :pac:

Wrapped when we were growing up. In different wrapping paper too to the gifts from the Parents. Santa's writing was my Dad disguising his own.

We did the same here with the Kids. Everything wrapped both from Santa and us.
No Santa this year - too old !

    Presents from us - wrapped
    Presents from Santa - unwrapped

Unfortunately we've no Santa this year. A few years ago I was running behind in the wrapping so instead of risking finishing them I put the unwrapped at the end of their Santa sacks and I wrapped the sitting room door! They still talk about it!

Santa presents are unwrapped but assembled.

Presents from us are wrapped under the tree.

That’s how we had it as kids and I’m carrying it on.

For me, Santa pressies were never wrapped. That way, you could tell what you got from him, and your parents. Herself wraps everything. Cue a few close calls later when talking to the kids. I knew you'd like that. What ya mean, Santa got me that.

For me growing up everything was wrapped, for my husband it was unwrapped. With our children we wrap everything and my husband thinks it's better that way too, more exciting not knowing what's there and seeing their faces when they open each one.
Also would never pre assemble anything, the fun of Christmas day is putting it all together, eating selection boxes and watching movies.

Could we put a poll on this be interesting to see the result

Wrapped in our house, 3 kids so 3 different styles of wrapping paper made it easy to see who's was who's. Also meant ye had surprise after surprise and hoping was one of them was what you asked for. Only exception to this were bikes

Unwrapped growing up and unwrapped for my own kids. Wild excitement regardless. But after the Santa years presents from mom and dad are now wrapped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,102 ✭✭✭Digs

Growing up always wrapped! Blew my mind to learn later in life some people got theirs unwrapped. Three kids, separated into bundles and your stocking with name on top so we knew what was what :D

Have 3 kids myself now and we always wrap Santa gifts. It’s actually one of my favourite Christmas Eve traditions now and my Mam said it was exactly hers too. Kids off to bed and sit down to wrap the Santa presents with a glass of something and good TV, I just love it.

I do think the wrapping ad to the surprising element of in wrapping everything and finding out what you got.

Unwrapped for me as a kid, and I don't wrap my own kids now either.
However one of them did mention recently they'd like it if Santa wrapped their presents like he does in the Christmas films.

Always unwrapped for us growing up. I don't know how Santa did it as there were a lot of us. Santa's the best :)

Unwrapped for me and for my husband as kids and we do the same now. A different chair/spot on the sofa each, small bits in a stocking with their name on it. I hate wrapping presents at the best of times - I'm just not very good at it - but would hate the waste of paper too, there would be a ridiculous amount with 3 kids.

Unwrapped for us growing up. Much the same as others, little bundles in designated areas. Presents from my parents were wrapped.

I think we did this thread last year? Was there a poll then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,238 ✭✭✭jellybear

On a sidenote, I've noticed a good few mention presents from parents. Would make an interesting poll/discussion too. We just had Santa presents, now I'm older I understand why money wise etc, but it never crossed my mind as a kid!!

Unwrapped for us growing up. And unwrapped for the next generation now too. We care about the environment in this house.

It was either last year or possibly 2 years ago during the great Christmas debate series :D

    Couldn't imagine unwrapped presents.

It'd be just like walking into Smyths on Christmas morning. You'd see your Polly Pocket from across the living room. No excitement nor suspense.

We never had parents presents either

No parent presents for us as kids, nor for my kids now and they've never questioned it either.

A friends family does parent presents on Christmas Eve. They exchange the more meaningful and personal gifts then. They include things for the entire family (like books for the library or a new board game), pass on family mementos, grandparent gifts, pictures, ornaments, wishes for the new year, etc.

Actually to be fair I do now do the Christmas Eve box and they know I make that. No big gifts though

I think Santa will be wrapping presents this year, firstly as the wee elf will have as much fun tearing the pressies open, and secondly as Mr & Mrs cluas want to suprise each other with what they have gotten the little elf.

In our house Santa's presents are all set up by the elves and ready to play with (unwrapped) and presents among family are wrapped. Adds to the magic 🙂

Not so much a wrapped or unwrapped question, more an assembled or not assembled.

OH and I have debated this the last few years, which usually end up with me putting together some complicated toy late on Christmas Eve after about 5 glasses of wine

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,432 ✭✭✭SusanC10

As I said earlier in thread - all Gifts wrapped with Santa ones in different wrapping. Both when growing up and with our kids.

My Parents always gave us Gifts too but things like books or games. Left the larger/more expensive gifts to Santa. My Dad since we were teens bought us a CD and a book himself (Mum bought all other gifts). The last CD he bought for me before he died was Snow Patrol - Up to Now.

On assembling Gifts - definitely assembled for the kids if it is a bike or similar. And unwrapped if something like that.

    Been there, done that.

Years ago when ours were 2 or 3 we got my daughter a toy kitchen thing & my son a toy tool kit & workbench. We left both in the box for what we thought would be maximum effect without realising it would take me about 3 or 4 hours to build the things... it genuinely took the fun out of Christmas morning that year so we pre assemble everything that needs it beforehand now. Though with gadgets taking over from toys moreso theres less building & more 'connecting' required nowadays!
