I quite liked going down to league one we won a lot of matches it made a nice change!

We'll at least you stuck by them and didn't drop them like a bad habit when they went tumbling down the divisions.

There's something to be said for that.

    It's a tribal thing.

Sports culture, it's not unique to the GAA. It's seen across every country that has a fulltime pro football league.

Exactly. It's why Dundee are called Dundee. It's why Southampton are called Southampton. The people in the crowds at those games are generally from Dundee and Southampton. It's why the fans of those teams sing songs about their own towns and cities.

I'm too embarrassed to wear a West Ham shirt let alone England.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,280 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

    It is bizarre though.

How a pub full of lads wear United and Liverpool jerseys all season and cheer on English players with passion.

When the England national team plays though most of the same lads claim to hate those exact same players and if you walked in in an England jersey you risk getting a dig, or at the very least abuse all night long.

I bought the new German away jersey because I think it's nice.
I would like to buy the England 1990 World Cup jersey but won't for the reasons mentioned above.

I'm an Aston Villa supporter for the last 25+ years since they had a lot of Irish players at the time and were doing well back then.

If your a grow man wearing a football jersey and not playing or training you should be shot on site regardless of the team , nation or whatever ,

Oh, so everyone over a certain age should wear cardigans, slacks and slippers, so?

Jerseys are smart, comfortable and look good.  I'm in my 50s and have dozens -  I wear them to work, when I'm at home, when I'm shopping, when I'm in the pub, pretty much anywhere there's no need to look "dressed up".  Always have done, always will do (hopefully well into my 90s :D)

I have my Russia jersey on today, and will be wearing my Argentina jersey when they play.
I'm happy your happy , but in my opinion there for kids unless you are playing of course or training ,
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing one as a fashion item since I was 15 but each to there own ,

Tumbling is a strong word :) thats maybe closer to a club like Sunderland...... but yeah...we have been pretty much a basketcase since Venkys took over (and sacked allardyce...and brought in Kean...jesus what a disaster he was).
We finally seem to be on way up again with Mowbray.
I wear my shirt in Dublin (when out walking the dog or gym) and no issues....probably because no one has a clue who they are any more lol

It's the same everywhere. People in countries without strong football league still like to watch top football and biggest leagues in the world. It's not just in Ireland, you come accross Barca, United, Real, Bayern jerseys everywhere the sane as everyone one used to support Red Bulls in basketball, Ferrari in F1 and so on.

All national teams play in the same competition so people support them first and when national team is out people support whomever. I still don't get the whole jersey thing but I don't know why would I have to watch local karting competition just because there are no F1 drivers or teams from where I come from. The same goes for Premier league, Bundesliga or whomever.

I wouldn't have a problem with an Irish person wearing an England jersey.

I hate this argument of Irish supporting English teams, football fans will support good teams and good football, thats what you get in the PL.

Do anyone complain about a person from Dublin watching Eastenders, shouldn't they only watch fair city!

Take somewhere like Norway for eg. There's a big following for the Premier League, however their domestic game also receives huge support. Top flight Norwegian sides are in a very healthy financial state and have excellent grounds and facilities for the most part.

We'd love to be like them in Ireland. Watch the prem on saturday but get out on a Friday night and support your local LOI side. A league can only improve with support.

Exactly this. 98% of LOI fans have an English team they like too. It's great doing both.

Because major football clubs tend to have supporters from across the globe not just English ones but Spanish, Italian and German as well but that is a different thing to wearing the national colours of the country where those clubs play.

Don't do it man. Just don't....unwritten rule over here we do NOT support England as a national team. We abhor the 3 lions on their shirt. The union jack is blinding to us.
We cannot wear that shirt. Your allowed to support them in secret though. You may wear the jersey in the privacy of your own home but step outside and you are asking for it :)

It never seems to be Bury, Oldham, Rochdale or Stockport they support though.

Always united, no matter what part of the Manchester area they lived in.

Do you know where those places are? I've been to Bury and Rochdale games and they're not that close to Manchester City area or even each other.

How many of the big Irish players played for those teams? You know our best players who people would dream of being like growing up.

The Greater Manchester Area where many Irish resided.

Anyone in the the city area should be City supporters.

I'm not a mad republican by any stretch. I'd even praise English/British things from time to time and have been accused of being a West Brit on more than one occasion. But in all honesty I'd rather be savaged to death by a pack of hungry feral dogs than wear an England soccer shirt. It's just not cricket.

Which is fair enough, in the same way I'd never wear a Scotland, Wales or Ireland shirt.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Being Irish generally means 'not English' so I'd find it a bit odd for an Irish born person to wear one, I read that English-born 2nd generation Ireland fans avoided the 1995 Landsdowne Rd 'friendly' like the plague as they didn't want to be associated with the Sasana, I'd guess they get sick enough of being taken for 'Brits' when they come home to see their folks, they wouldn't wear them or avidly follow England either.

I bought a pair of England shorts a few years back when I was up north. The were a nice fit and looked nice too. They were in a bargain basket for something like £3. I got a good three years 6 aside out of them. The odd gob****e made a smart comment.
I'd imagine wearing an England jersey just wouldn't be worth it at your average 5 aside. The historical relationship between the two Islands is the problem. The ****e you would have to listen from all the lads in their United shirts would wear you down. Its a shame as they generally have a nice jersey.
I wore a French Jersey to my 6 aside last Sunday evening, the only person to comment was the french guy who plays with us!

I will be supporting England and couldn't give a rats ass what anyone else thinks. I support an English club. I would always support our nearest and dearest including Wales and Scotland and I know a lot of the people form these countries would do likewise and support us as long as we weren't playing one another or n the same group.

    Were you expecting compliments?

Do you not understand the vast gulf in difference between what an Irish person's attitude would be to another Irish person wearing an England shirt versus a French shirt?

I've seen plenty English lads wearing England tops at footie and never a comment passed. It's not the shirt. It's the context behind the person wearing it.

Well, yeah, if those are the choices. ;)

On the supporting England thing, most people who follow English teams don't like the inconsistency being pointed out.

For someone who doesn't support an English club (St Patrick's Athletic through and through) I don't really feel any great animosity towards the National team, especially now. It was always a good laugh when they inevitably imploded at a tournament, mainly for the wailing and gnashing of teeth of the tv pundits who had convinced themselves they were contenders. Now even that has died off though, as the reality of where they are in the pecking order sinks in. Now when I hear England players saying they think they can win it (I suppose they have to say that). I just think, ah, bless.

The Vikings who attacked Ireland were mostly from what is now Norway.

That is the general opinion, but there were DubhGhaill (Doyles, as in John and Jimmy) and FionnGhaill (as in Fingal), and while it's a bit woolly many hold that the one were Danes and the other Norwegians. The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark exhibits a ship which was built in Dublin, so clearly we had visits from both nationalities.

Anyway I'll play safe and refrain from wearing a Norwegian jersey as well.

While I'm at it maybe I should also shun the French and Belgians (Norman French and Norman Flemish) and the Dutch (William of Orange, who also incidentally, had many Danish and German mercenaries in his army here.) And the Germans bombed Dublin.
I have to be missing a few. Even an African jersey isn't safe. The Algerians sacked Baltimore in 1631.

Probably the same mates that have no bother sticking on an Arsenal or Liverpool shirt every week man. Personally, I wouldn't wear one but such is life. I'm an LOI fan, and the only interest in any Jersey I've got is where I chose to set up me bank account ;)

I don't find football jersey as bad. GAA jerseys are a different story. I am a t-shirt man myself, so I will be wearing my England tshirt on Monday. Think t-shirts are much better value than the jerseys.
