Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I seen a Garda with his window down and holding a camera at me as I drove past. I was over the 80km limit but slowed down when I seen him.

Do they still have to stop you?

    Thanks.

Yes. If you weren't pulled, you're ok.

The new systems they're using can record and take photos.

I've seen on twitter they are using it to get someone at a later stage.

On the N11 at kilmac, a megane passed many of us at 100km/h at least, it's a 60km/h zone the Garda was using the binoculars type and he took view from front and rear, he didn't go after him but id hazard a guess he was followed up at a later date.

I don't think they have to stop you anymore. The new hand held devices they have record images and they can issue fines from that, whereas the older hairdryer ones were radar only afaik. The new ones have greater range too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 Peterlally1986

Ok. I heard something they had new tech that could record and a fine would follow in the post?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,505 ✭✭✭Killinator

They don't have to stop you but it is best practice to do so so as the FCN will otherwise be sent to last registered address of vehicle and not necessarily the person who was driving or their current address.

When stopped and they issue no ticket nor mention a fixed penalty notice are you in the clear?

No. They may say something like ah sure we will see or continue on there slow down etc etc....
Few weeks later, fcn in door.

That's pretty much it. It was 'you're alright. You'll have to slow down'. I did get a friend to check with a Garda he knows and his take was that I should have got the fcn there and then.

You don't get issued/given anything on the roadside. You don't 'get' anything there and then.

Nothing happens until the garda applies for the FCN to be created.
That can be either at the roadside via the new mobility app or back at the station but either way it's not like a council sticking a parking ticket to your windscreen. You'll only find out a) if the garda outright tells you you're going to get a ticket or b) it arrives in the post some time afterwards

    Exactly....

I had it years back the Garda pulled me over out of a pack of 6 cars, I wasn't doing the speed he claimed and I fought it in court.

He said to me a look do t worry about it it's onlyafew km over. He put down 82in a 60 and I wasn't even doing 68.

I understand that if they have actually gunned you and spoken to you then you've been done for all intents and purposes.

    At least in recent years.

I was told points and fine in the post. But there was no wondering whether I was being left off either before he said that.

No, there is still discretion available.

Hey, I was going ~56 in a ~50 and was pulled over. The Garda checked my discs and asked where I was coming from and for my license. After this he just said "thanks have a good night" and left. I'm wondering does a Garda have to state that I was pulled for speeding or have I just been caught?

It's most likely alright, but most of them to save confrontation will be all nice and you could well get fine in the post.....

Makes sense, you drive on, they get zero abuse and drive on.

That's what I was thinking buy I'm a fairly polite guy. I pulled over, turned on my cabin light and wound the window the full way down. I was only maybe a kilometre away from my house which is where I said I was coming from. I'd be much more at ease just knowing 😬

You're watching way too much American TV ;-)

Did you keep your hands on the wheel at all times...

What did they say.... Either way you couget fine but maybe not, he pulled you for a reason, I'm by no way saying they all bad either.... Was let off a few times

Had my hand on my gun the whole time!

They just asked where I was coming from, which was just down the road. Then asked for licence, had a quick glance, then just said 'thanks have a good night'

It may not have been in relation to speed at all. Something about that car may have raised suspicion, (time of night, type of car, occupants, seen before, etc...) Maybe they were just verifying who you were

If they didn't even mention speed then you're likely fine.

It's a sporty enough looking car with a roof rack for bikes so hopefully they just realised that it was a work horse. It was near midnight as well. Fingers crossed 🀞

Could be as simple as that.

    Hi all,

I believe I may have possibly been caught speeding eveeeeeer so slightly last Tuesday 01/06. I’m wondering if I’ve been caught approx how long does it take for the fine to come in the post?

So far I’ve read 1 week, 10 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. Any clarification would be massively appreciated! :D

How far away to or from a speed van can you be recorded?

How far away to or from a speed van can you be recorded?

it's fairly close but depends on how wide the road is and what sort of position the van was.

if they are up high on one of those bits to the side of the dual carriageway/ motorway then that's probably their longest distance

right on the side of a 2 lane road you'd want to be right up at them to the point you'd need to be not looking or think it's a different speed limit to be caught

    50-70metres around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭grassylawn

What address do they use to send tickets? Motor tax? Licence? Registration?

Edit: A previous post says it is the address the car is registered to. Is that correct?

Yes unless you are stopped and give the correct address if changed, so for example car is registered at 123 fake street.... This is where the fine goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭grassylawn

Can you call the Fixed Charge Processing Office and ask if you have been issued a ticket?

When it gets to 123 fake street, the post man will:
    A) return it as 'person not known at address/address non existent' and it gets sent to local garda station to ascertain the correct location for service within time period

    Or

    B) puts it through letter box, fine goes unpaid and summons issued. Gardai knock at 123 fake street, find out such and such is not there and then proceed to try and find correct address before court date otherwise it'll be struck out and summons reissued.

    Not necessarily....

Their new equipment can save the speed and pictures of the offences.....

If you look at twitter they are the new gun type and a binoculars type.

They tend to still go after though usually to be sure they get the actual driver.

Well, the most obvious part is left out.....were you speeding or not speeding*

*Speeding being defined as driving over the posted speed limit

Got pulled for speeding yesterday, similar thing to OP.
Fella ahead of me was doing less than 80 for a few km of a 100 stretch, decided to speed up and I decided I wasn't waiting around for him to slow down again so I over took.
Unmarked car in the lay, saw the lights, pulled over before she had even made the U turn.
3 points and €80 fine, she wasn't the friendliest of guards.

Hoping it doesn't screw me for insurance, I know it's usually only a 5% but if a car is already up on €2k to insure, will they just add the 5% or could that 5% push it into the 'unfortunately we cannot offer you a quote at this time'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,487 ✭✭✭✭Alun

Most of the time, people who slow down like that for no apparent reason and then speed up again are on the phone. Pity the guard couldn't have caught him instead.

Unless you have points already, 3 for speeding shouldn't make any difference.

Wouldn't be surprised to be honest, he also cut me off pulling out a junction earlier.
I had plenty of opportunities to overtake him and I decided for one reason or another not to (waited to long, didn't know the road, not enough of a straight stretch etc.), of course I did it in the speedtrap.

She said to me 'you were doing 119 in a 100, and that was after you passed him', I said 'well I was passed you by the time I passed him so I'm not sure how you clocked that'.

Are we missing something here. Did they use a speed gun.
It wouldn't matter wether you had passed the Garda vehicle or not to clock you after you made you're overtake, they can point the gun in any direction they see fit so could have clocked you after you had made the overtake and after you had passed them which means their statement would be correct. If fact them saying you were doing 119 after the overtake indicates that that is where they clocked you and got the speed after you had passed them.
If that was the case and if that was your response I can see why you didn't get any leeway!
