Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Was flicking between BBC News and RTE and didn't see any mention of it on RTE. I don't think it was even MENTIONED on the main headlines closing out at 7. Wonder why.

I'm sorry when you are quoting the Express you have lost all credibility unless your tongue is firmly in cheek.

Alot more credible than Fake News with their agenda of terror.

All sorts of rumours on Twitter

I fear for France if those rumours are true.

We need to take a deep breath and wait for the truth to emerge on this.

You're definitely not spreading these rumours on twitter through your many accounts are you?

    Terribly disappointing.

One of the most incredible pieces of architecture in the world. Visited Paris 2 years ago and loved the place.

Cornerstone set in 1163. Burned in 2019. A historic and tragic day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,825 ✭✭✭LirW

    Absolutely tragic.

The Notre Dame is undergoing a very extensive restoration at the moment. With a lot of welding, temporary electrics and probably cigarettes around this is unfortunately a risk and it could very well be that there's nothing sinister behind this fire but simple carelessness.

Most likely some construction accident. Feel sorry for whatever workers might have made one tiny slip up that started a conflagration.

Was on top of it about this time last year. So much wood around. Wooden stairs and holdings etc. I can see why it went up in a blaze. How could it happen though?

Apparently the firemen can’t get to a lot of the flames with their water hoses at present

There's been a lot of arson attacks on Churches in France this year. According to this article there's been 47 attacks on Churches and religious sites in February alone. Given the figures it's understandable why there may be suspicion surrounding this incident, though as of now, it's been reported as an accident.

The Chief of their Fire Service, sure works fast writing complete assesment reports. The fire isn't out yet and it's already being classed as an accident?

Let's wait a few days, for their lead Inspector to enter safely, and do preliminary site and causation inspection at the very least.

Also, is it not Monday 15th Apr in France today? They may be an hour or so ahead time-wise, not a full day behind.

Maybe.....just maybe.... a workman reported to him how the fire started as he witnessed it?

Terrible news, I was lucky enough to attend a mass there in November on a Saturday evening.

Stunning place. Will be sad if it's completely devastated, and unfortunately going by the pics I've seen so far, it looks like it is.

I just hope the scaffolding around the collapsed tower holds on. If that collapsed into the structure, it could do some real damage to the stone work.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!
