Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Massive flash of lightning followed by instant thunder here in D12. It sounded like it hit something really close.
D12. Not surprised, I calculated it was a few miles south of where I am.

Big cell has just moved in over Clonskeagh in Dublin. It was amazing to see it sweep in from the west.

Very heavy rain with thunder and lightening. Rain has started to abate.

Rumbling, then a flash and some thunder in Monkstown/Dun Laoghaire. Lashing rain right now.

I didnt think there was enough height to the convection at all for hail or lightning, I heard nothing here in north dublin. i seen that skinny tower that passed over south dublin an hour ago which i assume was the source of the lightning but again, didnt seem to be that much height to it really.. hmm

Had a few pretty good rumbles and flashes pass south of me about 20 minutes ago. Now this is approaching from the west!

The thunder has set off all the house and car alarms in my area, in the middle of it all is an ice cream van tinkling a little tune while these massive clouds roll in overhead. It sounds like the end of a horror film, it's just too dramatic to resist sharing it here! :pac:

Sunny skies over Dublin2 at the moment, with a big wall of dark grey coming in from the west. Seems to be alternating between 10 minutes of sun and 10 minutes of downpour with thunder.

  • Registered Users Posts: 50 ✭✭thebiglewbowski

That last beast of a band was a dud - a 5 minute drizzle of rain. I went for a cycle to the offo for some cans hoping to see a strike of two but nothing. We had some very dark sky's alright but i heard nothing all day and no hail.

  • Registered Users Posts: 216 ✭✭cocoemma

i work in tallaght and the thunder was mental.. came right over us.. at the last point the lightening actually hit our building and-the-noise-of-it,, right outside our window a massive flash of lightening then a mill second later a massive bang.. it knocked our phones out and some other systems we all jumped off our seats.. now i love a good thunder storm but that today just proved exactly how powerful nature is.. crazy... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

Living in Tallaght and a said, huge explosions of electricity coming from the sky.
Literally shuck my house. It was really amazing to watch.

Unbelievably heavy hail at 4.15 this afternoon for about 10 mins, ground was completely white, looked almost like snow for a few minutes! Then changed to rain which was very heavy for a few minutes.

Heavy hail and a lone clap of thunder here yesterday evening around 7pm.

It's looking juicy for us tomorrow, with widespread thunderstorms likely moving eastwards across the country, except maybe the far south. CAPE in the 600-800 range, and LI near -3K, though low deep layer shear will be somewhat of a limiting factor. The east should see some relief from the "drought".

I'd keep an eye on ESTOFEX later to see what they say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,789 ✭✭✭BEASTERLY

With the upper temps quite low, i suspect any decent surface heating will get vigorous convection going. Good potential for the whole country. Tbh i think the GFS is downplaying it, the Hirlam looks more on the money imho.

Strangely this evening's TAFs have no mention of thunderstorms for any airport, just moderate rain showers. We may see some of them upgraded in the next 12 hours, at least Dublin and Knock anyway.
