Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. The old HMV store on Cruises Street apparently.

Sure wasn't this already being discussed in the Limerick Businesses opening thread? :P

I never really got the appeal of Starbucks. I find their coffee very bland and their outlets have no character. I suppose it'll free up space in other coffee shops when the hipsters flock to Starbucks to congregate:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,859 ✭✭✭Poxyshamrock

    I can't wait for it anyway! :)

I'm sure Costa will only be dying to get into town now.

People seem to have a Marmite relationship with Starbucks. While I also find their coffee and sandwich offerings inferior to what independent coffee shops offer, there is no denying that Starbucks symbolises a certain affluence and progressive vibe to a location. The old HMV corner unit at Cruises St is possibly one of the best retail locations in the city centre so good to see it now being occupied by an internationally recognised retailer (even if it's not everyone's cup of tea or even coffee..pun intended!). It sure beats yet another euro shop or cash for gold shop hands down!

Another decent mens clothes shop would be welcome instead of another coffee shop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,859 ✭✭✭Poxyshamrock

There's not enough big units in town for any decent clothes shops at the moment.

Dunnes on O'Connell Street is one of the only decent sized places.

Seduzca on William Street would be a fine shop but can't see any retailer wanting to move into that part of town.

Sorry, didn't mean to tar us all with the same brush. Not forgetting our lovely liberal arts and early childhood students!

Centra charges €3.50 for a coffee and a muffin so for the overheads a bricks and mortar shop like Starbucks has it's not excessive in my opinion.

Centre would have the same overheads.

The margin on coffee/tea etc are exceptionally high.

Starbucks are a rip off but I do enjoy some of their sugar/coffee drinks. Iced carmel macciatto mmmmmmm.

The appeal is late opening hours, and no loud radio stations blaring out music so you can sit and read a book in peace.

Hopefully it'll be open til 9 or 10pm!

One thing that bugs me about Gloria Jeans is that it is constantly busy on Friday evenings when they are closing up. Surely they should take the hint and stay open a bit longer!

From what I've heard that unit is taken.

The hell with that Gloria Jean's is over on Thomas street if I wanted to pay €5 for a coffee I'd go there instead, that being said there are a ton of better locally run coffee shops around at the minute just avoid Arthur's Quay shopping center like the plague.

Insomnia in Easons will take a huge hit!! Love the coffee from there. Sandwich and drink for a fiver can't beat it!!

Roasted by a company called United Coffee in the UK. Same crowd who do McDonalds Coffee. It used to be made by a Scottish company and was a darker roast, and in my opinion, nicer. It changed not so long ago.

    I don't like the new beans/taste.

I'm with you there. Used to be a great fan of Insomnia and indeed it's not as good anymore.

Current place good for coffee is Aroma on Roches/Catherine Street

I'm not a huge fan of Starbucks but hopefully they'll do decent chai lattes. I haven't found anywhere in Limerick yet that tops the ones I get in The Secret Garden Cafe in Galway. Surely somewhere in the city must do a decent one! The one I tried in Insomnia recently was the most watery piece of crap I've ever tasted :(

Wonder why Costa weren't in town before now?
    It was hardly Planning restrictions?

I used to like their place in the Jetland, sitting down for a coffee on the couches with the sun beatin in.
They opened in Childers Rd and the Crescent soon after their departure from the Jetland.

Isn't there one in the Castletroy cinema too? They are expanding rapidly all over the country too even in smaller towns- no doubt the city centre is on their hitlist.

Thank you for this. I happened in there this morning and got a Large Latte mainly because it's a Double Shot for €3.10 and I was very happy with it.

Thingis there are literally hundreds of coffee shops in Limerick but it's rare you find a good cup of coffee here

Finding a coffee shop that stays open past 5.30/6 on a weeknight is impossible

There are two other Starbucks outlets in Limerick, one in Analog Devices and one out in UL. In total there are three Starbucks in Limerick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,859 ✭✭✭Poxyshamrock

They're not proper Starbucks though. They're basically just cafés that brew Starbucks coffee. UL and Mary I's Starbucks is owned and run by Campbell's/Aramark.

The same way you can get Costa in UHL and LIT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,152 ✭✭✭✭Berty

Concessions basically like a Ralph Lauren section in Brown Thomas. Doesn't make it a Ralph Lauren store.

  • Registered Users Posts: 276 ✭✭Johnwayne98

True but they are Starbucks in the sense that they all use genuine starbucks products and are subject to stringent audits by the starbucks to ensure that their products and methods are being used and followed.

The caramel macchiato or the strawberry frappucino you get in these places will taste exactly the same as any other Starbucks outlet

Centra 'coffee' doesn't really deserve to be called coffee in my opinion. Utter muck.

Cellar door cafe on Foxes Bow. Open til 9 most nights. Won't beat the snug factor of the place either! Lovely little spot. They do Badger & Dodo coffee..fairly nice.

Can't beat a good cup of Illy though, such as in Melt on Little Catherine Street. Noms.

But they only sell a few of the menu items you can get in a proper starbucks.

I'm hoping for their breakfast sandwich line-up and staying open til at least 8pm.

Insomnia above Easons, do really good coffee. We really enjoyed the air conditioning too.

I'd like to see Tim Hortons developing a proper foothold in Ireland. Seriously the best coffee around. Until recently I was able to buy tins of Timmies to brew at home in a few Spar Shops in the greater Cork area but it seems Spar are now switching to Insomnia.
Starbucks is the most overrated and overpriced coffee around, althought the caramel frappachino is the best of its type that I have tried.

Limerick city centre in my opinion has enough coffee shops, cafes, takeaways etc. One thing I always wonder is why so many of the existing ones close so early. Would be nice to see some of them, especially the ones on Thomas street remain open (even in the summer months) well into the evenings to give the area some life and atmosphere.

The city centre needs some high street clothes stores to attract some footfall like Topman/Topshop, Gap, Next, Urban Outfitters which would result in energy and vibrancy on the streets during the day, that you'd expect for an Irish city of it's size. I'd much prefer to see one of the stores mentioned above going into the old HMV unit than another coffee shop although it's better to see it being filled than left unoccupied like the stretch along Patrick street.

So its costa coffee moving into the former HMV site and not Starbucks?

Could you provide a link to that on the city council planning website, I'm having problems finding it. All I have found is the original application but no mention of who the tenant will be http://www.limerickcity.ie/eplan/FileRefDetails.aspx?file_number=1449&LASiteID=0

Click the "View Scanned Documents" link a little bit down that page.

Then click the second "Drawings-Elevations" link and it shows drawings with Costa Coffee on the facade.
