Just came across this fight and thought why not start a thread on great lesser known fights.

This war is Akira Yaegashi vs Pornsawan Porpramook - a classy punch picking Japanese v a psychotically aggressive Thai. It starts normal enough, but gets progressively more and more violent, with a certain round very similar to Gatti/Ward round 9.

Yaegashi is very good to watch, a real shame that the lighter weight guys don't get the respect they deserve in the western World, he should be a household name across boxing fans. Instead only the hardcore know who he is.

Chisanda Mutti v Lee Roy Murphy

Little known cruiser world title fight from 1985, probably because it took place in France. The finish became famous, but it's an excellent fight that gets progressively more brutal the later it goes.

Not sure how lesser known this is, but rewatched an old 90s classic the other night, almost 30 years since it happened.

Their first fight: Junior Fly title fight between Michael Carbajal and Humberto Gonzalez fom 1993. A 7 round classic. Real belter..

Not a lesser known fight but I watched Duran Leonard 1 in entirety for the first time yesterday. Brilliant fight!! I had Duran slightly. Very close. Two boys could take some hits

Duran-Leonard was a great fight. Very very competitive, but Duran a clear winner for me..clear in the sense that he controlled the flow more..

I dunno. I never liked Leonard for the cockiness but after three rounds I think he had the best of it. He stood toe to toe and took all that was coming. Last z3 rounds all

him. If anyone said he shaded it I’d not argue. Duran by a whisker for me

I love the Duran / Leonard 1 fight.

Great action between two genuine legends.

Although every second of it was competitive, I can't see how it could be marked for Leonard. Duran built up the lead which allowed him to cruise a little in the last few rounds, but he definitely won it.

Watched the Nelson fight as well. Something to get me through isolation! Very bad stoppage imo. And, those Sheffield boys are hard to suffer

For very casual fans it would be lesser known great.

Holyfield/Qawi 1 is a fight to watch. Really good..A young Holyfield. 1986 FOTY

A domestic one I love is Carl Johanneson vs. Kevin Mitchell 130 lbs, 2008. Absolute belter.

I also loved DeGale v Groves!!

Must take a look at Holyfield. Mitchell was in some real wars, had great heart an agonising nearly man.

Groves de Gale was a great fight. I thought the judges got it wrong I had de Gale by a whisker. I suppose at the time it might have been lesser known.

Dennis Andries v Jeff Harding trilogy... I was at the 3rd fight which Harding won by a close decision ... Absolutely brutal.

Not necessarily a great fight, but a great performance by Kostya Tsyzu v Vernon Forrest in the 1991 World Amateur Final.

BBC had shown a few of Tsyzu's fights before this and I became a big fan. He won the best boxer award and had won the same in the previous two Europeans.

He was a serious amateur.

I remember watching this one live with 3 mates ,Hard to believe it was nearly 20 years ago now,

Gomez lived up in Ballymun for a time as a kid , he had a really rough life growing up ,

He was born in the back of his Dad's car after this Da crashed on the way to hospital , you couldn't make it up

McCullough v Morales is another great fight. McCullough was in a lot of great fights. Must have had one of the best chins ever in boxing.

I actually attended that fight, but never watched it on screen since.

My abiding memory was that it was a real tough, gruelling fight that Wayne did just enough to win.

I don't think there were any, but I'd love to have seen the punchstats for that fight. Both of them never stopped throwing the whole night.

Just thought of this cracker a few days ago. I saw it on International Fight Night on UTV back in the mid 1980s. It features the best knockdown I ever saw. EVER!! God only knows how the floored boxer got up, but he did, and quite quickly, but his jaw was broken and he was retired in the corner.

Loris Stecca (Italy) was a high quality boxer with an impressive record who won the super-bantam title but lost it in Puerto Rico to local man Victor Callejas. Stecca won five fights by KO and there was a rematch in Italy in front of a very passionate crowd. This is what happened.

Wildly exciting Mexican cult hero Jorge Arce was in loads of entertaining scraps and this was one of the best.

His opponent was tough, well-schooled Aussie Hussein Hussein and they produced a cracker.

Only discovered this barnburner recently when I heard about the death of former bantam champ Richie Sandoval. I read about his brother Alberto and there was a mention of his war with Alfonso Zamora. Zamora was one half of the famous Mexican bantam world unification 'Battle of the Z men" with Carols Zarate. Going into that fight they had a combined record of (wait for it) 74-0 with 73 KOs!!! Shock horror, it didn't go the distance.

Alberto Sandoval had just one loss in 29 by cuts, was classy, tough and could punch. Zamora was extremely dangerous early, but was deemed to have stamina issues due to inconsistent training habits. Enjoy.
