So is course rating almost like average standard scratch? It seems like it is when I look at the course ratings for Stackstown. For competitions cottage course standard scratch is nearly always 70(Par 71) and gate course is usually 72(Par 72)

    Club|Slope Rating|Par|Course Rating
    Stackstown Cottage|125|71|70.0
    Stackstown Gate|128|72|71.8

Well it depends on whether you're talking about CSS or SSS. SSS very seldom changes - basically when the course is officially rated. CSS is different every time a competition is played. I'd be more inclined to the view that course rating is close to SSS as they are assessed on the same basis - the scratch golfer. The only difference being that course rating is expressed to one decimal place and SSS is an integer.

For this thread I just have it sorted by slope rating and if this is the same by course rating. On mature reflection it seems that the difference between course rating and par probably gives a better indication of the toughness of the course.

This is what I was saying when I heard they were ranking courses based on set criteria. When you describe corballis it sounds very easy. When you look at the scores it seems to be very much in line with other clubs. Comparing to the other club where I have been a member I'm set to get about 8 extra shots playing there. And to be honest, I find corballis harder. Maybe the conditions adjustment will average it out a bit?

It cant because it is same as adjustment to CSS, maximum 3 added to the rating

Two rounds there has already added a shot to my new handicap. Playing again on Friday and probably a couple more times befor Nov. My handicap might be 3 or 4 shots higher at tis rate

From those figures it looks like there's not much difference between the blues and the whites. I'm guessing that's not the case in your estimation!?

Couple of crazy blue tees, particularly on the new 5th.
Its tough enough from the whites. They have recently cut back a bit of the landing areas right and left of some of the fairways as too many lost balls, so that may be a factor.

We've had 4 medals this year and only one person has broken 70 (nett). So yeah, its tough! Winning scores have been 69,70,71,71.

I was looking to find the hardest I’ve played, and bethpage black comes in at 155 off the tips. 77.5 for a par 71. I’ve only played it off the whites which is a still whopper 148, but 74.2 which is actually not that generous given how fiendishly difficult it is.

I’m a reasonably decent driver of the ball, and there’s holes where I genuinely reckon I’d struggle to reach the fairway from the back sticks, and if I did reach it’s about 15 yards wide with cabbage everywhere.

Reminds me of The 7th In The European, off the tips, in to the wind. One could be all day trying to make that fairway.

Blue and White tees in Castlemartyr are both par 72. Ladies par is 73

Out of curiosity do any courses in Ireland have different pars for different men's tees? That USGA course lookup site has a few listed but I assume they are all incorrect?

Definitely something not quite right there, when you see Portmarnock Links supposedly easier.

How will inter clubs work now? Since an 8 in one club could be 10/11 in another, who will make the cut for teams? If you look at the slopes above, an 8 in The Heritage would be a 4/5 in Tullamore, supposedly

How will inter clubs work now? Since an 8 in one club could be 10/11 in another, who will make the cut for teams? If you look at the slopes above, an 8 in The Heritage would be a 4/5 in Tullamore, supposedly

I'd think they will carry on as they were before. The handicap index is the same as the current handicap you have essentially, just now it will change from course to course.

Definitely something not quite right there, when you see Portmarnock Links supposedly easier.

the slope is calculated into your handicap as the course slope and your score will be used to calculate the adjustments in handicap.. So a 10 handicapper in Mount Juliet is expected to hit +13/14 where in Stackstown Cottage they would be expected to shoot +9 to achieve the same handicap
