Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Speaking of skiing whilst dressed with some style, I spent a day hanging out with this Scottish chap for a days skiing this year:

Unfortunately for him soon after that shot he disappeared in a cloud of snow below me and then learnt that wearing a woolen jacket isn't considered the most suitable form of mountain wear these days:

Most if the kit can be picked up from the relevant nations homepages on the web, not all of it is for sale

They are struggling to go fast enough on a lot of the jumps and make it the distance.

What were the judges watching there? Should have been way higher points.

glad thats over , she only just made the last jump on the victory run! how close to a disaster was that ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Allyall

A few of them didn't score very well, I thought. - I mean, I thought they desevered higher.

Camillia Berras first run, with the double forward flip, was very low. Her only mistake was coming off the first rail a little early which should've been a minor deduction..

In fairness she didn't deserve much more after that, but I thought her first run was poorly marked.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Has been confusing scoring I think in that awesome tricks have been badly marked because they didn't land right on the rail just before that. In the boards, Jenny Jones run wasn't especially exciting, but there wasn't any mistakes and that's how she got into the medals. Was very difficult for any of them to make it down safely and fast enough today though, so doing a fancy trick probably wasn't worth the bother as you'd almost certainly put a hand down or something.

Just straight lining it and going big so that you made the jump clean would have been the best course of action for the skiers today.

Nothing yet about Yuki Tsubota. It may appear here when there is more news.
    http://www.torontosun.com/2014/02/11/canadian-yuki-tsubota-suffers-scary-fall-injury-in-sochi

It had been reported after her first run and fall, that Kaya Turski had dislocated her shoulder, then she went again? Fair play to her.

    EDIT:

Footage here, It looks way worse from the front :( - http://www.20minutes.fr/sport/1295834-video-l-enorme-chute-de-yuki-tsubota-en-slopestyle

Apparently she is okay - http://en.ria.ru/sochi2014/20140211/187423399/Canadian-Skier-Tsubota-Not-Badly-Hurt-After-Crash-in-Sochi.html

Nice to see him qualify for the semi. Thought his second run was great and I think he deserved a higher score for it (not just saying that because I'm Irish). I suppose some of the judging has been a bit off.
Still great to see him qualify

Even cross country skiing can be exciting. One guy who was spent after the first corner due to having knackered himself in a long distance race the day before, then finds three guys infront of him crash on the same corner and he then makes it through to get a bronze in the sprint.

Seamus has done amazing to qualify. I do love the Winter Olympics, despite my scant knowledge of almost every event. Though even I can see that the half pipe does look 'brutal'.

When are the semi finals for Seamus? and does anyone know if it's gonna be possible to see it online?

It's just started. I can't find a stream for it but the results are posted here live.

    http://www.sochi2014.com/en/snowboard-men-s-hp-semifinals

Seamus scored just 54.0 in his first run.
Not as good as his Heat scores.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

Yeah BBC will cover it on line, the athletes had asked for the Half pipe to be delayed due to the condition of the pipe but Seamus did well today and a 7th place for team GB Katie Summerhays in the slopesytle!

The slopestyle was probably the most fitting tribute to Sarah Burke I have ever seen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 386 ✭✭radiata

Damn, you usually have a few options on BBC but no snowboarding unless they have it delayed. 54.00 in his first run

How many go through to final from his semi?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

12 make the Final from the semis

Bloody curling!!! Am waiting for the halfpipe to come on. I'd rather clean the windows (which I'm doing in this cold, keeping one eye on the telly) I can't stand the way the BBC are trying to make it into something 'exciting'.

Curling rocks!!! You have to go to the Tim Hortans Briar in Canada to see it at its best!

Is that 6 from the 2 groups or the top 12 in total.
4th after his first run! Didn't realise he's only 16

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

Sorry 6 spots up for grabs in the semi final, 12 riders total in the Final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭stackerman

6 automatically in from first qualifying, best 6 scores.

And 6 to come from the current 2 groups running now.

He's fourth though so doesn't that mean he has a chance of one of the sixth spots?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

Silly boy a little inexperience! With thee pipe and conditions he could have put down a little less spectacular run and got enough to qualify!! Still may scrape it but it will be tight

Still 8 to go, depends on how the others fare. The conditions seem to be in poor shape, so lots of fallers in the their 2nd run. And then people taking it easy if they're in the top 6 already (which what Seamus probably should have done!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,318 ✭✭✭Absoluvely

    Out to 6th place now.
Needs the last 4 competitors to all score below 54.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭Down South
