Trainspotting sequel

I thought it was poor. The 'No More Catholics' bit was comedy gold but that aside, very cliche, predictable, and ultimately dissapointing.

Choose life, choose a sequel, choose a farce, choose embarrassing yourself on screen desperately trying to be the breakthrough actor you were twenty years ago. Choose a sound track, choose vynal remixes of classic Iggy Pop when you haven't been to the record shop lately. Choose escaping from prison, going home and not being raided that very night. Choose getting an EU grant up front on the advent of Brexit. Choose mindnumbing spirit crushing reprises of scenes from the original in pursuit of a narrative. Choose an audience who loves it all anyway and secretly hopes for T3. Choose life.

I did not go in with the expectation that part two would be as good as the original. Part two was just bad. It was a bad stupid sort of comedy.

My hubs is finally getting to see this tonight. It was so hard not to say anything about it but less difficult as the days went on, so it was less fresh in my mind. I'm in the camp that was underwhelmed with it but I think the huz will like it more than I did!

People keep saying about it "It was never going to match the original but..." and honestly it seems like Boyle and the screenwriters were resigned to that too and I think that's a shame. Boyle is a singular director. He doesn't always get it right but I really think he had the ability to make a sequel to match the original. I would have preferred new iconic bits rather than rehashing of parts for the original, such as the much inferior updated 'Choose life' monologue.

A solid 7.5 out of 10 for me. The cast were excellent as was the soundtrack. The story perhaps could of been a bit stronger but some memorable scenes such as begbie and renton chase and when sickboy and renton meet again.

Not as dark as the first film and for me begbie was the star of this film. A fantastic character

I really didn't like it. Didn't feel like it had its own story to tell, and what little it did have made no sense (must be some outfit that accept £100k transfer via a signature and no ID

). I enjoyed the 1690 scene and a handful of others but overall this just screams it's a film that didn't need to be made.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to seeing it again and trying to spot the bits I missed. The toilet scene, and the Tommy narrative bits were excellent.

He was great but he was sanitised for this film. His character in the first film and the second book, was a lot darker and more violent. They alluded to it in the film but it changed the character a lot.

A solid and overall enjoyable 7/10 for me. What this movie suffers most is being a sequel to the first movie. If it was a standalone gangster/drug caper movie like for example Layer Cake etc, it would hold up quote ok IMO.

The most disappointing part for me was the amount of suspension of disbelief it required

(Begbie being allowed roam the streets as an escaped con, the grant being paid upfront etc)

but many movies have unbelieveable twists that aren’t anything more farfetched that what we are asked to swallow here.
But all in all a decent, well-paced and very watchable movie.

Why couldnt they have thought up a better scheme for the money than that lazy grant plotline? Thats what let it down for me, other than that it was fairly enjoyable, too much clips of the first film though, once or twice would have been fine but there was too much.

That we kinds the whole point. It was nostalgia w*nking. That's why it could only work 20 years after the first one. The people who enjoyed the first film at 20, are 40 now, and are ready for a bit of nostalgia. They talked about nostalgia all through the film!

I saw this last night and was just blown away.
I thought it was better then the 1st - and I love the 1st.

I loved the Nostalgia, the soundtrack,the 4 main characters, it all
just clicked for me.

It had everything, it was sad,funny,solemn - I never thought I´d see
Begbie in a touching scene - one that worked and didn't feel out of character.

And I just finished reading "Porno" on Friday and didn't like the ending
of that

Renton ripping sick boy off AGAIN ... and a big anti climatic meeting
with Renton and Begbie

- this film was way better.

The scene where Spud was reading his stories and Begbie was getting into it
and remembering - "THAT LASS GOT GLASSED AND NO **** LEAVES TILL I FOUND OUT WHAT
**** DID IT" - Todays Begbie saying it with the visuals flashing back to 1st film - amazing.

The last scene when Renton was in his room dancing to "Lust for Life" - stunning.

Can't bloody wait to see it again .

I loved it ... my best film so far this year (yes it's early, but I can only see Dunkirk possibly beat it ..... maybe Star Wars..)

"Had everything" is a bit strong, the plot was absolute meaningless and there were so many holes in it, it was like they were taking the piss. It didn't really matter since the characters were still there and that's what made the first film so great. Although as another poster has remarked, Begbie was a little too T1000/Batty in Blade Runner.

In response to posters saying Renton's character was less appealing in this movie are not remembering that he narrated the first movie (with possibly the best narration ever heard in a movie) so to an extent we saw everything through his eyes.

I feel the exact same way. In fact I've seen it twice now and I bought the soundtrack. I've never gone to see a movie twice in the cinema before.

I felt ALL of the emotions watching this. I was surprised at how much it made me laugh too and the showdown scene when

Renton is being choked to death

had me tense as ****.

I genuinely thought he was done for.

And like you said, the Lust for Life scene had me leaving the cinema with a massive ****-eating grin. Brilliant stuff.

Small quibble but I did miss Renton's voiceover.

I really enjoyed it. There was nothing flash about it, instead it was just a very raw story about friendship and addiction.

The acting makes the film but that isn't an issue for me as it's essentially a character study first and foremost. Ewen Bremner in particular deserves praise as he captured what so many addicts struggle with: giving up one life and having no idea how to replace it. Spud's isolation was unbearable to watch.

Watched this at the weekend. As someone who had a slight obsession with the first film, I was skeptical about getting the bad back together for a sequel. The first one is as iconic as films get for me. It is a slice of my 90's upbringing and I can almost recite it word for word.

This was just a needless sequel that was mildly entertaining at best and a complete mess at worse. I was really disappointed with it.
The best bits were the bits with spud. Renton didn't feel like Renton to me at all. The original Trainspotting is still, imo, the only notably good performance of Ewan McGregors career and he fails to recapture the character. Begbie was overdone almost to point of parody.
One thing that summed up my dislike of the film was the scene mentioned above in bold. In the original, the thing that made the glassing scene work was how blasé and care free Begbie was in chucking that pint over his shoulder. It came across like he does that, or similar at least once every week. It didn't seem a big deal at all. No one who was with him even seemed that shocked in the original film. It is not a nostalgic memory that he would be screaming and singing about.
I was just so forced and contrived. A lot of the callbacks worked but that was just awful. It's like they couldn't think of anything memorable to put into the new film so Danny Boyle is just masturbating to his own greatest hits album.

Some good stuff in it but overall just not worth reviving. The beautiful ambiguity from the originals finale is now forever gone.

I thought it was alright but I was watching it with my husband and his friend and they were talking throughout the whole film. The only time they stopped talking and got distracted by the film was when the sex scene came on and after that they went back to talking

it's a good trip down nostalgia road. It certainly did not have the same impact on me when I watched the first one when I was in my mid teens at the time. Very hard hitting in those days for so many reasons. It had a lasting affect on me and not a movie that has faded in my memory over the course of the years. I've watched it a handful of times over the years and still remember most of it. The follow up, like I said a nice nostalgia trip to revisit the old characters, entertaining, but that's about it.

I found it an okay movie with a few great scenes. Especially liked their explaination of the origin of the trainspotting title. Definitely found it to have a less hopeful ending than the original.
