    Pretty disappointing in the end.
CME Impact Recap: Geomagnetic activity following the much weaker than predicted CME impact remained well below storm levels. Solar wind speeds were mostly steady near 400-450 km/s, and the Bz/IMF component was for the most part positive, with only minor periods of slightly south pointing Bz. Earth bound protons continue to gradually decrease and remain within the minor S1 radiation storm threshold.

The large sunspot group has been remarkably quiet since the X flare and will soon be rotating away from the earth, so we are running out of time for a second chance of another large CME in the near term.

    Any chance of anything tonight?

Kp is currently about 3.5. So not a chance of seeing aurorae from .ie tonight - certainly none strong enough to see through the moonlit sky. For visible aurorae (not just a glow on the horizon) from e.g Dublin or Limerick, we need Kp of 6 or greater.

Convinced I saw activity in the last half hour. I know it is really bright with the moon but unless my eyes are wonky I think I saw them.:)

    I'm north of Letterkenny.

judging by the image 2 posts up, there's a definite chance of that Daniel!

Moon doing some really funky stuff with the clouds to the north of Athlone right now - they look almost like a big silver tree in the sky

Must admit I didn't realise the above chart was a live one!
Boy does that make it easier to predict.

Might be something for people up far North to keep an eye over the weekend.
    From http://www.solarham.net/ two days ago.
    Weekend Aurora Watch
The solar wind prediction model released by NOAA has been updated to include a pair of coronal mass ejections with potential Earth directed components. A model released by the Goddard Space Flight Center is also updated to include a halo CME from earlier this morning. An impact to our geomagnetic field will be possible this weekend (Feb 15) and could lead to aurora displays at high latitudes.
    feb12_2014_stream.gif
WATCH: Geomagnetic Storm Category G2 Predicted
Highest Storm Level Predicted by Day:
    Feb 13: None (Below G1) Feb 14: G1 (Minor) Feb 15: G2 (Moderate)
Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 55 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.

I just got an auroral alert from gse. All it says is:
A large auroral event is in progress now.

It doesn't seem strong enough to be seen this far south though.

People up near the North coast should be on the lookout for Aurora later after earth was hit by a small CME from a flare that left the sun on Tuesday.

Currently KP-5 and IMF south and clear skies so a good chance of seeing something if its stays like this.

Reported as visible as far south in the UK as Yorkshire & Norfolk. Of course its cloudy here in Dublin

Is this actually visible to the naked eye or do you have to own an expensive camera and use special settings to see it :o

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭Auldloon

Very much so visible to the naked eye but last night where I was I couldn't see 10 meters it was that dark. In those pics above it almost like daylight so the camera can pick up much more at night than the eye. The colours I could see weren't as vivid as in those pics either.

Absolutely fantastic images from everyone last night. Being reported as one of the displays in 10 years. Was so glad to finally see them and to also capture them.

Here's one of my images from last night.
