It was interesting, though perhaps not surprising, to see that the Raiders have signed Notre Dame running back George Atkinson III, son of former great George Atkinson, as an undrafted free agent.

He'll find it hard to climb a depth chart that includes Maurice Jones Drew, Darren McFadden and Latavius Murray, but may challenge Korey Sheets especially since Atkinson is supposed to be a pretty useful kick returner.

You just picked up as bad a pair of hands as there is on the waiver wire in Little. I had serious hopes for him. Never to be. Says a lot that Cleveland drop him when WR is a big need.

Surprised he was picked up so fast. Guy is an asshole too. Always good for 5 yard penalty.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,341 ✭✭✭✭Chucky the tree

Not expecting much from him at all, but our WR corps aren't exactly great so no harm in picking him up. Relatively cheap as well.

RIP James Garner, one of my favourite actors and a diehard Raider fan, who died over the weekend.

He used to be on the sidelines during Raider games in the 1980s and is pictured here with Todd Christensen(who passed away last November).

Cool jersey featuring Garner here too.

I heard before that due to Garner's influence, his character, Jim Rockford, was also a Raider fan, but couldn't find any confirmation for that.

There is a report on NFL.com that while in San Antonio, Texas, to honour Cliff Branch on his induction into the PVILCA, Raiders owner Mark Davis met with city officials to discuss the possibility of a potential move.

Davis has always said that his favoured option for the future, is for the team to remain in Oakland and that he has $400m to part fund a new stadium, so maybe this is just a negotiating tactic to turn up the heat in Oakland / Northern California or maybe it was an opportunity to touch bases with parties from San Antonio, while he was there.

I couldn't see Jerry Jones(Dallas Cowboys) or Bob McNair(Houston Texans) being too enthusiastic about another NFL team moving into Texas, but the size and population of the state would be sufficient for one.

I cant see this being a runner. Jerry Jones is a close personal friend of the Davis family. To me, this is more of a negotiating Tactic. I would attach more credence to the reports if it was for Los Angeles. Much bigger market and they have a history there. San Antonio Raiders????? Eugh! :D

I have to say Carr impressed me against the Seahawks. I know it's only the preseason but he showed a lot of promise in terms of making quick reads and executing a variety of throws.

As you say it was only preseason, but thats all we have to judge any rookie by so far and it hasn't stopped the so called experts making judgements about the other highly drafted QBs - Bortles, Bridgewater and Manziel. We also don't know whether we have signed the Matt Schaub who was one of the top ten QBs in the year pre-2013 or the Matt Schaub that played so poorly last year that Houston ended up with the leagues' worst record, resulting in them trading him. Based on their preseason play, Carr seems to have outperformed Schaub, but there is a big difference between preseason and its vanilla defences and week one of the regular season, when a rookie QB will face regular blitz packages.

Schaub has looked short of confidence and arm strength, but obviously has a huge edge in experience, while Carr has the greater arm strength and confidence.

Dennis Allen is remaining coy about who his starter is, possibly to keep the Jets guessing, possibly to keep the fans quiet and possibly to deflect any criticism of the decision to sign Schaub (who would possibly be the leagues' highest paid backup). Dennis Allen and to a lesser extent Reggie McKenzie have to win or at least compete this season, so they might feel that an experienced QB like Schaub offers less risk, but if Schaub does start next week, it might not be long before Carr gets his chance.

Personally, if they can get the running game established and play sound defence, I'd go with Carr as Schaub hasn't shown anything to make you want to choose him and so long as you're not throwing Carr to the wolves, he offers much more upside. But at this stage neither QB is Peyton Manning, so they can't afford to fall way behind and expect either to lead them back, but if they can keep the games close, then Carr should start.

Carr has already shown more promise than the last few QBs that the Raiders drafted, so fingers crossed.

It looks like he's going to get the call much sooner than expected. I hope this isn't too soon. But he has looked very promising.

Allen and McKenzie have to go for broke. They have the sword of damocles hanging over them, in the most competitive division and they have one of the toughest schedules in the league this year. If your rookie is performing better than your incumbent then at least try him out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Well that was a dose of reality wasnt it? Its not looking good for the current management team after yesterday's performance. The Offense was dismal in the second half until the game was out of reach. Carr looks good, but everything else is awful on the offensive side of the ball. We'd better be more competitive in the next game or Allen will be toast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭Blackhorse Slim

I like the way they eased the rookie qb into the team, only 3 plays at a time then kick it away!
Already looking forward to next season!

Seriously, need a much better performance at home. Carr has promise, but need to establish a running game to give him a chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,017 ✭✭✭Leslie91

O line looking poor lads. Like u said Carr shows promise but he will need a running game to support him. And for all Allen's qualities on the defensive side of the ball... it's not like the D played lights out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,341 ✭✭✭✭Chucky the tree

Another season where the 2015 draft will be the highlight. Offense was terrible, I don't think Carr is good enough to start. Never should have been rushed in there based on 2 quarters of a pre-season game in the first place.

Good technique from Mack, hopefully next time he tackles the opposition.

I was thinking about going to watch the game as I was going to be in NJ this week, decided against flying in a few days earlier to see it, glad I made that decision, it was a really poor game. I thought the D did fine, we gave up one big play but other than that they did a good job of holding the Jets considering the D was on the field for most of the game.

Glad Carr started, as if Schaub had started he'd have been ripped apart by the media and fans and had to shoulder the blame. The O line was poor, and our receivers struggled to get open against the Jets secondary that was supposed to be really poor due to injuries.

Need to win next week, or it could easily get ugly very fast looking at our schedule.

It almost look like it. He won't make it past the bye week, thank god.

God Almighty!! Receiving 101, protect the ball. If I was on the Defense I'd be shouting at those Offensive players.

I think the Bed and Breakfast offense generated more yardage

On the plus side, Carr looks the real deal. With new coaching staff and an improved D line we could be average :-(

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

It was really awful. For me, this was worse than last season. Last season, we all knew that the management were handicapped financially. This year there is no excuse and the play and coaching were awful. Putting in a rookie Quarterback to a team with an awful running game and a changed line is never a good thing. And the QB play is about the only highlight I can think of. That and the fact that JJ watt had a fairly quiet game, defensively. So now we go through another coaching change. In the last 12 years Oakland has changed owner, GM, Coach, and players. And our record is still lousy. The depressing thing is that its not just one thing, its everything that needs improvement. Other teams can point to areas of optimism or potential. We cant even do that.

Yup, we look way worse than last season, we were actually competitive in a lot of games last season and were a bit unlucky not to get a few more wins. This season looks like it could be an 0-16 year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭heyjude

I think if they get badly beaten this weekend(which is very possible) then Allen could be fired on Monday, the only thing that might save his job for another week is the fact that the Raiders game the following week is in London and changing coach following an east coast game and prior to flying to London might postpone any decision for a week.

Carr is the only bright spot, the O line can't seem to create running lanes no matter which RB is playing and whether the receivers can't get separation or the O-line can't offer adequate protection, the passing game is anaemic.

James Jones has done okay, but the other big free agent acquisitions on offence haven't performed, while the Woodley, Smith and Tuck on defence have been bossed by the opposing lines and haven't managed much QB pressure, allowing the opposing QBs to exploit the weak corners. I don't know how much the loss of Nick Roach is affecting the overall defence, but as they can't change personnel at this stage, maybe they need to add a few more drastic wrinkles to their defensive playcalling, they can't just keep doing the same thing and hoping for a different outcome.

They need a win urgently to restore confidence or the wheels could really come off and even a change of coach might not prevent the possibility of a 0-16 season :( Not to mention what sort of score the likes of Denver might put up against them

Better this week, but Moore really should have held onto that at the end and given us a chance.

Jackson holding a bloody safety on the play before was so frustrating as well.

The holding call which wiped out McFaddens equaliser looked harsh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭Blackhorse Slim

Defense looked a lot better at least. Still a loss, need to beat Miami.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭heyjude

Don't know whether this week's improved play has more to do with the Raiders stepping it up or the 2014 Patriots playing poorly. I would conceed that the Jets are pretty strong on both lines, while the Texans D line is pretty stout too and I don't think the Patriots O or D line are as strong, so maybe that partly explains the improvement. But having taken one step forward(though still losing), they take one step back as it seems that starting safety Tyvon Branch and starting wide receiver Rod Streater have both suffered foot fractures which will presumably keep them out for several weeks(or longer) and so I'm assuming neither has travelled to London. I'm assuming that pushes Umama Young into the starting lineup at safety and presumably moves Denarius Moore into the start opposite James Jones at wr(though Andre Holmes will see more playing time too).

These latest injuries leave the team pretty thin at several positions with the loss of Nick Roach and Sio Moore leaving very little depth at linebacker, MJ Drew's injury leaving the team leaning heavily on the always brittle Darren McFadden and with Usama Young now in the starting lineup, they have to hope that Charles Woodson stays healthy. Ideally Nick Roach or Sio Moore can play next week and Jones-Drew will return very quickly(before the heavy workload crocks McFadden for the season)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭heyjude

Safety Tyvon Branch has been placed on injured reserve for the second season running, after it was announced that his fractured foot will require surgery. He missed 14 games last season and will now miss 13 games this season, which must place some question marks over his future.

To replace Branch, the Raiders have claimed Brandian Ross off waivers, having waived him during the preseason, he has travelled to London and may feature on Sunday.

No news yet on what the team may do with wide receiver Rod Streater, who also suffered a foot fracture last Sunday. But he too may end up on injured reserve, when the team get back home.

10 defeats in a row, I'm not one for knee-jerk reactions, but surely this should be the end of Allen & McKenzie?

McKenize will stay, pretty confident of that. This year's draft will be a big saving grace for him.

The Tony Sparano/Greg Olson era begins.........forgive me if I'm not jumping with joy. Nor am I jumping with joy with the prospect of the Chucky era pt 2. 10 years out of the game..... :(

With Sparano now appointed as interim head coach, I'm not jumping for joy either, though the other in house candidates also weren't too inspiring.

I didn't think Dennis Allen would lead the team to the promised land, but given that the past two years have been spent tearing the roster apart to sort out the salary cap issues and thereby having to field essentially a no-star team, I think it was unfair on Allen to blame him too much for the past two 4-12 seasons. However, this season they recruited a number of high profile free agents and seemingly had their strongest draft class in many years, yet the same problems continued to dog them, which Allen and McKenzie must share responsibility for. I wouldn't give the players a free pass either, some of the tackling/blocking against the Dolphins was abysmal and for an NFL player, the fundamentals of sound tackling/blocking should be second nature.

I hope that John Gruden isn't given the job, I think he would want total control of over personnel decisions and I'm not sure he's that great a personnel man, his Superbowl win being a product of taking over a defensively loaded Tampa team assembled by Tony Dungy and of facing a Raiders team that was still running the same offence that Gruden himself had installed in Oakland :(

I hope that Sparano kicks some ass and knocks some heads together before their next game or they might end up with the first pick in next years draft (and possibly go 0-16)

Was there on Sunday for my sins, something had to give. Some of the players didn't try a leg.
Reckon Tony will give starting spot to Schaub pretty soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

What's depressing about all of this, is that the roster is not loaded with talent, apart from Mack and Carr, 2 fine acquisitions. We are in the same shape as post SuperBowl, where we were stacked with older players, the difference this time is that we havent just had a run at a Superbowl!!! There's turmoil on the field, in the backoffice, there's even potentially no stadium next season!!! Right, need to stop, I keep this up and I'll be in tears :)

Nice to see Sparano burying the ball, I guess this is practice for the Chargers game, bury the ball once we get our first possession and hope that Rivers and the Chargers can't find it. I'd have said at the start of the season that this would be a banker Win but having watched the Chargers take the Jets apart, I can only hope that the bolts suffer from a large dose of overconfidence on Sunday.

Having said that, its a home game, and we did a job on them last year, so who knows.

Love it... Yeah I'm trusting we don't overlook you like we did last yr. No doubt you'll get a new HC bounce but provided we show up I don't believe yee have the players yet to compete.

I have to think McCoy will not for 1 minute allow any complacency this Sunday, roll on, it's #raiderweek.

Oh and Derek Cox is gone... he was toasted in this fixture last yr. Our corners are massively improved with addition of Flowers and Verrett.

San Diego are my early tip for AFC conference champions. I won't overreact should we lose badly this Sunday.

I see those ridiculous power rankings (total waste of time imho) have us No. 1. If these are meant to suggest that someone (a pundit) thinks SD are the best team in the NFL then what is the point?

For the record I reckon were we to play Denver 10 times on a neutral site they'd win 6 of em. We might split with Seattle in a similar scenerio and that is not to say not one other team in the league can beat us, of course they can. Examples might be Dallas and San Fran and maybe Indy.
