I'd say go for Popular Songs or the wonderfully named I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass before Summer Sun.

You may like The Unicorns, they only made one proper album but it is one I come back to time and again.

Have you listened to any albums by Islands? You'd like them if you like The Unicorns. You know, seeing as they are mostly The Unicorns.

Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed with all Unicorns related projects, less so with Islands now because Vapours wasn't too good.Clues(Alden's last band) released a brilliant album last year too.Human Highway are another side project to check out, and Nick is working on something with the singer from Man Man.What's your verdict on the last Islands?

If you liked Menos el Oso, get Planet of Ice. It's not quite as good but still a great listen (and has probably their most addictive song, knights). Just keep away from their most recent record- it's horrible.

I didn't really care for Return to the Sea, really liked Arm's Way and liked Vapours... less than Arm's Way though. I mean, it was good, but it wasn't anything compared to Arm's Way or anything the Unicorns made. I haven't been following the other Unicords-related bands though.

Just heard Spanish Sahara by Foals and took an instant like to their sound.
Something so elegant and intricate about it.
Is this what's termed Math Rock?
I feel i've missed out on a whole musical genre here. :)
What Foals albums/similar sounding music would you recommend?

And So I Watch You From Afar
    Maps & Atlases
    Fang Island
    Adebisi Shank

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭ElaElaElano

I think Foals' first record is more math-rock really, they've gone a bit more subdued with TLF. Anyway here's some stuff to check out:

    -Cursive
    -Owls
    -Life at These Speeds
    -We are Knives
    -Cast of Cheers
    -Circle Takes the Square
    -Les Savy Fav

    plus what Fidelis posted.

  • Registered Users Posts: 265 ✭✭not bakunin

    And The Redneck Manifesto!

Math rock is a genre based around weird time signatures, that's what makes it sound different.

Field Music - Field Music (Measure)

This awesome from start to finish and it's a double album, don't see many of those bad boys anymore. Also, given what you listed, try The Cure - The Head on the Door.

I've been listening to drukqs by Aphex Twin a lot lately. I got into this about 3 years ago, thought it was pretty good, and didn't give it a whole lot of attention past 'some deadly tracks on there'. But after listening to it a lot more over the last two weeks, it's astoundingly good. The idea that one man can be responsible for all that music just boggles the mind. Some bands with 7 members can't approach these levels of perfection and sophistication. Mind-bendingly hardcore at times, and humblingly beautiful at others, and never a boring moment IMO.

When I think of one album that has great song after great song I think of U2's Achtung Baby......one of the great 'alternative' albums of all time IMO.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,863 ✭✭✭seachto7

    As the title suggests....

Been checking out bits and bobs, but don't know where to start album wise.

From the live clips I checked out, this type of music seems to lend itself very well to the live area, so if there are any good live albums or even a live dvd (hardly), I'd be well interested..

Seems there is a dvd from Japan, but it seems short enough....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,883 ✭✭✭smokedeels

I've always enjoyed their gigs more than the studio albums tbh, saying that, Horse Stories would get my vote if you want to check out a studio album. It's got more high-spirited moments than say.... Ocean Rain, and the songs work individually, so it serves as a good introduction.

Not sure about live albums, I don't have any, would be interested to hear suggestions too.

You could try some LCD - new album, Menomena, Sufjan Stevens and The Mountain Goats.

Have a look through the recently listening to thread. Some good stuff in there.

Cool. i'll check out the thread.

LCD - have the album. Still haven't listened to it properly.
Sufjan Stevens - can't stand the guy, his music is better suited to Broadway tbh.

I'll check out the other 2.

edit: woah, mountain coats have some discography. Where is the best place to start?

Give 'I walk' by Sufjan a spin and see if you like it.

For Mountain goats - i started with Sunset Tree and Get Lonely.

    Hi
I'm looking for suggestions for a set list I'm djing soon. I've got New Order, Violent Femmes, Smiths, Cure, Siouxsie, Sisters, Bauhaus, Joy Division and more. I'm trying to remember what I listened to back in the 80s and have the feeling I may be missing some obvious bands and songs,
    Cheers

This time last year I was looking at my CD collection and it was utterly rubbish and full of stuff I'd bought 5 years before. There was a thread here about the top albums of the decade and Arcade Fire - Funeral and Mumford & Sons were in so many lists I bought them both. I got the new Arcade Fire album a couple of weeks ago and its not sitting well with me just yet.

To this day I still listen to them most weeks.

Id love a recommendation for some equally epic albums.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,090 ✭✭✭jill_valentine

I was well impressed by both Foals' Total Life Forever and Los Campesinos! Romance is Boring this year - they don't sound entirely like either of those albums, but they do have big-buildup-into epic sounds and the same kind of emotive themes, so if you're looking to use the albums you mentioned as a jumping off point, I'd say give those two a bash.

Foals' one had a really surprising amount of depth, but might take a bit of patience. Los Campesinos! have a bit of the same rough-round-the-edges, smashy uppy instrumenty charm you might be looking for. Both of these songs and albums would be in my respective top tens of the year.

If, however, you're looking for something that sounds more or less like Arcade Fire's older sound I'd say The Maccabees latest, which was heavily Arcade Fire influenced, IMHO.

For something leaning closer to Mumford, the closest thing I can think of is actually Villagers, for the folk and lyrical stuff, but that does lack the little twangly bit of banjo that you might be hankering for. Let me know if I'm anywhere in the ballpark.

Romance is Boring is magnificent, I'm glad they grew out of the childishness of the first album(still enjoy it tho).

Still love their older stuff, yeah - it has the feel of a really bitchy teenage break up, tremendous amount of energy, and I enjoy it immensely - but all that back-and-forth bickering can wear me out a bit.

Romance is Boring is a much more thoughtful mess. A bit less catchy, so I don't know if those songs translate live as well as their previous material, but I want to listen to it as an album a lot more. They're guilty of some f*cking awful lyrics sometimes ("more post coital/ less post rock" FFS) but some of them - The Sea Is a Good Place... for example - are just achingly perfect. They can be very good at painting a scene that tells you all you need to know, without quite saying it outright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭KeanSeenan

I completely agree and the first verse just seems lazy.
Who Fell Asleep In is great, plus it has Zac from Parenthetical Girls doing some very subtle harmonies.
The E.p. was an interesting take on some of the songs too.

I like Nick Thorburn(Islands/Unicorns) and Honus Honus(Man Man) in theory..but Nick's been letting me down lately.Maybe I should wait until I hear an actual song.
Also on Los Camp: Their tour videos are good and I always like the double meaning of Romance is Boring.
