Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Some might say I'm tempting fate, but what the heck. I booked flights yesterday for what I hope is the marathon weekend.

Probably a bit early to be checking the weather though.

Government of Ireland have effectively said there will be rolling restrictions (lockdowns) in place until a vaccine is found as the health system will never have the capacity/resources to cope with Covid.

With that in mind this marathon has little chance of going ahead. Your best option for running next year will be in mainland Europe.

I think every chance of this going ahead. Multiple vaccines in play at this stage, I'd say we'll have one more lockdown in January and then we'll come out of it mid Feb, in parallel with vaccination of hospital staff, nursing home staff and vulnerable. By June there'll be no risk of pressure on the healthcare system so big events will go ahead.

Vaccines wont be ready until 2022 at the earliest. Unfortunately you just have to look at all this stuff as glass half empty for the time being.

No surprise to get the email today that it's cancelled 'til Sunday 5 June 2022. There will be a virtual event for anyone interested.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭innuendo141

Registered for the virtual last week. Really need to just get on with it and at least try and train for something. 2 months of training now and I'll see how I get on.

It's not on again until 2022. See post above.

Meant the virtual, updated my post for clarity!

Probably will sign up for the virtual for first marathon and do a route that swings by the house a few times.

Need something to focus on, I have no problem getting out and putting the hard yards in when there is something to aim for. When there is nothing to aim for, it's easy to say why bother heading out!

Getting close, the mile markers were freshly painted this week.

I read there are 3000 entered in the marathon which represents double the 2019 entry.

Appreciate a lot of these entries will be rolled over from 2020/21 so likely a number of people who wont end up actually running, but still it sounds like a promising crowd.

Just curious, will the Blackrock railway line be fully open again for the marathon? Or will the route be different this year? (I'm doing the half so doesn't apply to me, but interested to know).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 511 ✭✭✭Qwerty27

First time doing this so what can I expect?! Seems there's a few hills towards the end to add to the challenge!

Good to see that there seems to be a healthy number of entrants from post above so should be some running company and a decent atmosphere.

  • Registered Users Posts: 35 mobitron

The course is very flat overall. The hills towards the end are not bad at all really.

Its a great course and a great time of year imho for a marathon.

Will be nice and warm but not hot.

Main considerations would be hills out of the tunnel early on and the drag up to blackrock village.

The old rail line and around by the river is a nice flat section. Also later in the race once you climb to model farm road there is a good flat section there and also on the long road as they call it back into county hall, nice last 8k to the race all in all.

I was also wondering this. Last time I was home back in March it was closed for works around the Skehard Rd access.

This will be my first marathon too. I did the half back in 2019 and really enjoyed it.

Thinking of running the half, not sure yet whether I'm in the shape for it but I'll decide in the next couple of weeks.

Pleased to see that there's pacemakers, the sub 1:30 is who I'd be following. Just wondering for those who've ran with pacemakers before, how big would the pacemaker chase pack be? And would it have significantly reduced towards the end of the race?

Unfortunately due to some issues recovering from covid, I have decided against running the Marathon. Now, I'm not offering my race number, I don't think I can do that, but I have two hotel reservations, for the Sat and Sun nights, one in the city center itself and one on the outskirts (6k away). I know from chatting to others that rooms are like hen's teeth, for that weekend. Now, again I don't know if the rooms will transfer, center hotel is €150 per night (2 sharing) and the other is €270 for the two nights. Both are done through booking.com so I'll be cancelling soon. DM me if anyone needs a room.

Well the official map is up on the web (https://corkcitymarathon.ie/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/UPDATED-FINAL-CCM-ROUTE-MAP-CMYK.pdf) and it shows the line being open. On Saturday it was open as far as the Skehard Road underpass, I guess it will be fully open on race day.

Hi I'm just considering a last minute entry to the Half, where could I leave my baggage?.

    Thanks

Entry available for the Half Marathon due to injury. P.M. me if interested

Changing & bag drop are normally at City Hall, presume it will be the same this year.

Gonna be on the bike for a mate who's running the full. Any restrictions or parts that would be tricky to navigate on the bike?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,021 ✭✭✭Kellygirl

Bikes used not be allowed on the course in previous years so I’m not sure about this year. I’d imagine the area from Blackrock Castle along by the water and following the footbridge and walkway as far as the Marina would be messy as narrow. Also, going through the relay changeover points will be very busy. There is also a very narrow path after the Mardyke where again a bike and runners could get messy. Can’t think of anywhere else right now.

That's not terrible (12C-16C and no wind) but humidity could be a factor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 511 ✭✭✭Qwerty27

Woudl anyone have any suggestions for parking close enough city centre/South Main St? Coming down Sat evening, staying til Monday but Q Park is over €50 for the weekend. On street is free from Sat evening onwards so easily could save a few bob!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,459 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

I'd possibly try around Proby's Quay and Crosse's Green, lots of street parking around there and close.

Weather forecast seems to vary wildly depending on the source!

My biggest issue now is where the hell I'm going to park, particularly with all the road closures/restrictions. Would q Park City Hall be feasible, particularly if trying to leave around 1pm? Will be arriving from the Macroom side.

Route preview on the running in Cork blog - think this was written a few years ago so not sure if its already in this thread

  • Registered Users Posts: 41 smurph6

Handiest option is the black ash park and ride! A lot cheaper too!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Thanks for that, but website said it's closed on Sundays? Maybe it will be running for the marathon though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,678 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

It would appear to be open for the marathon. 5 euros for the day according to the Cork City Marathon Facebook page.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Thanks a mill for that. Had checked the page but it somehow passed me by! 🙂

Are you doing the marathon or the half? I parked in City Hall before no problem at all and got of there quite quickly after too. I was in early, prob round 7:30/8 am. I’m doing the half and thinking of chancing parking there round 9am.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Doing the half too. Was originally planning parking there around 9 or so as you said, but thought that the traffic going in might be insane? Parts of the south ring are down to one lane inbound, not sure I want to risk it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,021 ✭✭✭Kellygirl

hard to know. The bus from the park and ride has to come in that way anyway though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,027 ✭✭✭opus

Best of luck to everyone on Sunday, looks like the weather won't be quite as sunny as predicted.

Glad to hear it's not just me feeling nervous 😬 My biggest concern is getting there on time. Was planning on being at the park and ride for 9am and hopefully being at the city Hall for 9.15, dropping my bag and more or less heading straight to the start line. Hope I'm giving myself enough time.

Also hope I'll be able to find the pacemakers among the hundreds of people there?! I'll be following the 1.30 half marathon pacers, so I'd imagine they'll be near the front of wave 1? Never ran with pacemakers before so not entirely sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,678 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

You should be fine. There is a fair bit of faffing about at the start and the pacers should be fairly visible. Worst case scenario you could go up near the front and they'll have to pass you. City Hall is close to the start so even if you got there by 9.45 you'd still have loads of time before kick off at 10.15.

Nice little swag bag today but surprised there's no names on the numbers, thought that was the norm? Anyone know if there's live tracking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 825 ✭✭✭Homesick Alien

Other than the soggy runners we had pretty ideal conditions. Fair play to all the people standing out in the rain cheering, they were fantastic. And big ups to the pacers, I felt like I was being carried along in our group!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Yes, a great day overall! Really nice atmosphere around the place and great to be cheered on by so many people. Intended to try and drop the 1:30 pacers around the 9 mile mark but decided it was just too tough today. Let them catch me again and was carried to the line with time to spare. My first experience of a city marathon, just a really nice vibe overall, and especially after everything that's happened inside the last two years. The hills were barely even hills to be honest, very manageable. If I had one nitpick I'd say I might have expected a bit more than water, a banana and granola bar at the finish line, but apart from that a very enjoyable day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,921 ✭✭✭deisedude

Delighted to nip under 3:55 today. Last 6 miles legs felt like jelly so had to dig deep.

Overall its a fairly fair course. It's certainly hillier in the second half but no getting around that. Great buzz today, crowd were fantastic.

Surprised they didn't have live tracking or it didn't seem to be working well from what I heard and even the results is shocking, type in a name and you get a load of results for people with completely different names too. In comparison Limerick had a great tracker

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Was anyone else's official result slightly slower than what they thought? Mine was ten seconds out, which obviously isn't the biggest deal in the world, but I'd have been fairly sickened if I ran 1:29:55 only for the official results to then put me at 1:30:05! Started/finished my watch as soon as I crossed the start/finish lines so not quite surely what the overlap could be. I'd always expect them to be off by a couple of seconds or so but not ten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 825 ✭✭✭Homesick Alien

Yeah mine was slower by 13 secs than what I clocked myself. My Garmin was also way out with the mile markers from quite early on - I recorded 26.48 miles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,678 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

IIRC there were two mats at the finish line? (Hope I haven't got that wrong!) I stopped my watch at the second one and my chip time was 3 seconds faster than my garmin.

My watch did record 13.32 miles for the half. I'm pretty sure I wasn't weaving all over the road so that did seem long. My watch was also consistently beeping the miles about 200 metres before the mile marker. 🤔

Good (but tough) day out all the same.
