As a hiker, yes NF still makes excellent hiking and ski gear.

However they have leaned very heavily into street wear now and the quality of a lot of there clothes is now pretty poor, so don't just assume because it is NF, that it is high quality gear. I've even heard that some of the lines which were previously very well made, are now much more cheaply made.

The hiking/snow gear specific stuff seems to be still decent. Yes a bit over priced compared to other hiking gear companies, but during sales, can come down to reasonable prices (for hiking gear) and can be well worth it. Roughly half my gear is from NF and they are excellent, in particular I like there pants.

Have been wearing their gear for almost 20 years now, and they still do some great stuff. Have two NF Apex Flex jackets for different conditions and they're superb jackets. I also like the dark grey logo on black, so doesn't shout out the brand... which is something I hate from all brands. There is a wide variation in quality of their offerings though and overall it's no where near what it was. I dug out a 15 year Nuptse jacket recently and it's leagues ahead of a newer thermoball I own, especially noticeable around the cuffs. You just need to be very aware when you're not paying for their top tier stuff.

I'm just not sure I'd buy the new stuff. They've switched from Gore-Tex (which is admittedly rotten stuff environmentally) to their in-house futurelight material. And while they seem to hit the marks for waterproofness/breathability, there seems to be question marks as regards durability. Looking around, I keep seeing Arcteryx recommended. But the prices are at least x2 NF and I'm not sure I can justify it.

Edit: just seen Augeo’s comments on CSN. Lol. As another past pupil I can totally agree with you.

I have a Patagonia jacket from over 10 years ago, was my regular jacket for years but still get some use out of it every year, it's nearly indestructible, ridiculously long arms on it though!

Forgot to mention, (breathes on watch and polishes it) I've been to Patagonia. Didn't wear Air Max though.

Was a former BA for the ages. Dublin to Buenos Aires return for €375. Return flights from there to Patagonia about €300.

    Jackwolfskin gear is excellent too

It's grand for outdoors folk IMO, much like HH gear...... I'd not wear that casually in a fit either as it's worn by a load of knobs. Grand on a boat though.

I'm speaking as an adult :) I don't really want to dress like a teenager.
I went to school in Bishopstown, plenty wannabe skangers there iirc :pac:
Best of luck to him with his teaching career.

I'm fully aware there are folk other than skangers, wannabe skangers and outdoorsy folk who wear NF but as I said, IMO the brand has been ruined.

    Example.......... ross%20kemp%20on%20gangs.jpg

    That's not a skanger.

That's Ross Kemp the TV personality.

Wouldn’t go near this brand anymore. It’s now standard issue for the grey tracksuit - electric scooter brigade.

If you want the best gear, the best advice IMO is to buy from specialised manufactures who focus on specific areas that they are the experts in, rather then wide brands like NF that do a bit of everything.

Jack of all trades, master of none

    So for example:
    - Backpacks: Osprey, Gregor
    - Shoes: Salomon, Merrell, Scarpa, Meindl
    - Jackets: Rab, Arc'teryx
    - Baselayers, Tshirts, Jumpers, hats, gloves: Icebreaker Merino Wool
    - Socks: Darn Tough I love though hard to get here, Icebreaker as a second option.
    - Pants: Columbia, North Face

A lot of these can be quiet expensive brands, but if you keep an eye out on end of season sales, you can get good reductions that bring them down to the same as cheaper brands, while offering better quality/technical ability.

Worth keeping an eye on M&MDirect & Sports Direct. I got Salomon shoes very cheap on SD not that long ago

FWIW M&MDirect are now covering VAT & duty for IE customers

Just paid ~€119 (down from €220, with 10% newsletter additional discount) for a Triclimate Jacket for hiking :)
My current Regatta jacket has served me well... but isn't fully waterproof... and has become a big manky over the years :o
Fingers crossed it all works out well.

Bought NorthFace Tetsu 2.0 as well as Jack Wolfstien Caledon jackets and got them both delivered today.

Both are nice as casual wear. Both M and both a bit too wide strangely. Anyway the NF is a bit too plasticky, so it's going back. Keeping Jack Wolfstien Caledon.

Most of them are fakes you'd get for €120.

You'd rarely see NF jackets in that price point in town. Most are Tri-Climates that are easily gotten at 100-150.

Some reason I got Canada goose ads popping up, Google must think I'm a drug dealer. Or maybe from clicking links in this thread.
Anyway, the price of them, holy moly.
I knew they were expensive but this is ridiculous, 2000 a jacket. I've a good job and I'd like to think I earn more than a teenage drug dealer at bottom rung of the ladder but I was surprised at myself last year paying 250 for a timberland jacket, most I've ever spent.

Yes, I'm probably in the wrong industry. I may not have a Canada goose jacket but also not looking over my shoulder all the time so I will do without.
    The price is nuts though

i'd be hovering between a medium and large, so went for a small. I was a bit worried it would be too small, but it's plenty big enough !! I'd hate to see what a large would be like on me !!

Yes, keep in mind North Face are an American company, so their sizes are more aimed at the US market and can thus run a bit large for us.

Canada Goose are lovely jackets but make no sense at all for Ireland.

If you lived in Canada, Alaska or Northern Norway, then they would be an excellent investment, the type of jacket you buy once and then use all winter long for the next 30 years.

Given our relatively mild climate they make zero sense.

BTW keep in mind that most of the CG jackets you see in Ireland are fakes. There is a massive fakes industry built around CG.

My first time encountering Canada Goose was when I lived in Canada. They made sense there given the harsh winters. I’ve seen a few Canada Goose jackets in Dublin. A real Canada Goose jacket is complete overkill given our climate.

Got myself a nice NF fleece. I throw one on if I’m at home and it’s a bit cold.

Thanks OP, mine arrived today, very happy.

Sizes are large, thank god as I'm a big lad, bought 2xl as it's their biggest size and it's perfect on me.

I'm a 3-4xl normally, if it didn't fit had someone else in mind for his birthday.

Just to echo what others are saying here about the sizing - thanks OP for the original post, btw.

I ordered the Men's Aral 2 Parka, size 'S', which the website said was 94% correct for me (and I am 'S' in almost all clothes). It arrived today, and it's enormous - I am absolutely swimming in it, so back it goes. Based on my experience, I'd say you should nearly order 2 sizes down . . .

Not if you hang around street corners whole day long. It's a very practical choice and a good investment for some teens. ;)

I'll be the contrarian.... I used the mobile web advisor to determine the optimum size (but it has several subjective questions). Although a lot depended on the subjective answers, overall it put me in the L to maybe XL category. I then tried the web browser advisor... and followed the more detailed objective measurements, and that put me squarely in the L (in fact with some margin to boot).

So I went for the L.

Snug. If I was in a store, I;d have immediately tried the XL to compare.

The jacket has a fleece liner... and definitely, I can't wear another fleece or sweater underneath it.

I have worn it out walking with just a T-shirt and this fleece+jacket combo. You could interpret it as "tailor-fitted" to perfection. But honestly, I'd feel happier with it a little bigger. I just don't want to send it back to get XL and find that's swimming.

Maybe I should have ordered both, with the intent of always returning one. Just didn't want to burn any more carbon than I had to.

I hope my long-winded comment is of some help!! :D

Balls, ordered two coats in XXL. Have one I bought in the States years ago and it's in tatters. It's a snug fit and is XL, hopefully the two I ordered aren't massive. Cheers to the OP....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,506 ✭✭✭Oafley Jones

In terms of sizing, pay attention to the cut of the coat (listed in features). I wear medium and there's huge difference even within the same range e.g. Apex Flex GT and Apex Flex GT with Insulation. The later is a standard fit with tons of room, whereas the former is (a very) slim fit.

JD Sports have some good prices on the North Face McMurdo jackets. I picked up a green one for €202.50 (had a 10% off), €225 is reduced price. Exact same one is €330 on TNF website. Few sizes of black (€240) and grey (€225) available.

You may need to schedule the return directly with UPS, using the tracking number from your returns slip.
