Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Why do people make comments like this which may impact on somebody else's ability to sell their car?

How else will you keep the ****e talk alive?

Apologies it was meant very tongue in cheek. Anyone who's buying a citroen C6 at this stage is an enthusiast & won't pay much heed to a random joke on the internet.

    That's a junker...

Some parts he may be able to pass on but car is scrap....

Would love to give it a run on track though.

Sure if ya got a few months out of it it'd be better than paying for a Sportage. :P

Just out of curiosity, is there any one here that could source necessary parts second hand and repair themselves on the cheap and how much would it cost hypothetically speaking

With that amount of rust on it and the oil leaks visible underneath with simply a torch needed they should have had a touch more sense purchasing it. The only place the car looked ok was in the cabin itself, elsewhere it was a complete shed.

Yes agreed and ,You could more or less tell from the vendor and the street it was being sold on that it was a no no from the start, I would’ve driven on by to the next one from a private seller in a good house.

Mercs of that era are notorious for rust id say a lexus wouldn't have a quarter of the issues.

Yerra put some oil in the diff, antirust on the sill and drive on for a year.

as soon as the merc s class W221 here become available for the 5k budget of this thread, particularly if you can get them in LWB, good luck to anything else posted here. Throw the facelift lights on them and a nice set of alloys and you have a serious looking yoke!

I think an important point is being missed with Car Throttle.

If you expect Alex Kursten to buy a sensible one owner LS400 in immaculate condition then I'm sorry but that's not how he rolls.

The whole aim is to buy something that's motd. ANYTHING.

The entertainment factor that Alex is trying to deliver is boosted by the S Class being a pile of poo.

The fact that the bill to repair is silly is exactly what Alex sees as entertainment value .

See the mock driving tests where Alex deliberately does silly things and makes silly comments to the "examiner".

He did the same at what looked like some Ford driving skills day.

My opinion - he and the Car Throttle crew probably were well aware the S Class had issues.

I find him entertaining but if you are critical of him for not checking the S Class correctly or not buying a better Lexus then you are missing the point of what he does.

I enjoyed that video... What do you reckon they'll do next?
They could get a lot of the parts off a donor car, and get it back on the road as cheaply as possible.... But that's starting to sound like wheeler dealers.. So something a bit more outlandish probably...

Strip it I think and sell the parts which are still good.

to be honest thats a merc specialist doing the work, buying used parts off ebay (mirror, headlight etc... ) get a garage to do the shock and ball joint, buy a 3rd party anti roll bar, change the offending plug / coil and do the diff seals and oil yourself, if you found a competent body shop on the cheap id say youd get it all done for 3k.

Two keys is nice. Change the alloys. Facelift lights. Needs polish and a detail. Some amount of car for that money. Personally wouldn’t buy one that wasn’t lwb...

I've a w220 bangernomics that I bought as an S Class apprenticeship car. Next one will definitely be an L. They are some machines but there's a lot of tech to learn so not for the faint hearted. Superb cars to travel in though even an old tired one.

I reckon you'd get it for 5k. 4.0 V8, looks pristine, 89k miles, tax til Nov and NCT till next June.

Glad to see the prices of these have bottomed out and if anything might be on the rise. Bar the comfort seats, looks pretty standard 740 spec. Lots of car for the money though.

Good cars! Had 3 year old grand daughter sitting in back of my 2007 whilst I opened the sunroof. What does the other button do she says (SOS and telephone symbol), nothing I said with some daft explanation and pressed it........ "WHAT SERVICE DO YOU REQUIRE" (or something like that) says the operator

Now I am convinced I had no bluetooth connection to my phone, no phone in outdated Nokia 6310 cradle.... also text came up nav dispaly with current location! How does that work? Off topic I know:D:D

No, it was the exact same car:

    1 owner, low miles, 12 months NCT - €2k

Suspiciously cheap or just a realistic seller?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭pippip

So it was, must have seen a silver one elsewhere.

I did the same with mine when I bought it 6 years ago, pressed the button but couldn't figure out how to disconnect the call as the car was new to me, the operator said in a very stern voice "Sir please disconnect the call now...." 5 seconds later "Sir you do realise its an offence to misuse the emergency services line..." I just turned the car off in a panic and it disconnected the call. :pac:

It's the same as any phone, you don't need a SIM to dial 999. So both our cars have working phones, just no SIMs. The phone itself is a module in the car, the handset just connects via bluetooth to this module.

And with such a heavy chassis, they mileage is pretty poor. Knew a guy in Germany who had one and for mixed driving (city and autobahn) he was lucky to get 18mpg from a diesel but get a well kitted out one and they are lovely to be a passenger in, very relaxing.

Always had a soft spot for them but couldn't justify those sort of running expenses.

    I call your bluff...

Firstly: I am pretty sure a guy in Germany would never use mpg to tell about economy...

Secondly: The average economy of Phateon @ SpritMonitor is 9.2427713.gif. That's around 30 mpg(UK).

Ffs, he quoted in l/100kms I put it into a mpg for ease of understanding

And ask most directly employed drivers of MyDriver in Frankfurt, Sixt who own MyDriver bought 50 Phaetons just before they stopped production to use for their own fleet in Germany. That's a direct quote from one guy who I got regularly when over on business in Frankfurt.
