It's interesting to note the relative calm at Sligo Airport tonight, despite the strong winds elsewhere in the northwest. This is due to the shielding effect of 1,100 ft Knocknarea Hill just to the south of the airport, but which can be a real danger to aircraft landing there in southerly winds due to the windshear (I can personally vouch for that!).

    Latest winds:

    Donegal Airport SW 33 G 43 kts
    Finner S 23 G 37 kts
    Sligo Airport S 11 kts
    Connaught Airport S 23 G 41 kts
    Belmullet S 31 G 48 kts

Probably the windiest night in a good many months, no rain though so it doesnt feel so bad.

It's pretty damn awesome up here in Derry. Rain is pretty diagonal with the wind, it's bouncing that hard off the roofs, it causing a "spray" of water.

Haven't seen anything like this in a long time, going to try and get a video of it.

And now the wind at Sligo has swung around to westerly, where it's no longer blocked by the hill, and the strength has increased to 29 Gust 39 kts.

    enormously interesting SU

I was just saying today where are these winds

Well they are here now but when i looked at met earlier it was showing 30 to 40 knots everywhere and yet in Sligo town I saw no trees swaying much

    Very interesting

Just been woken up, what the hell is going on outside, havent heard this bad wind & rain in a long long time! Would usually enjoy but worried sick about my horse outside in Wicklow :( will be checking on her 1st thing tomorrow but for now I'm just astonished by the power of what's going on outside! When will this pass?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,655 ✭✭✭delw

serious driving wind & rain now :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,186 ✭✭✭emo72

it was gusty all evening but dry. That rain was unexpected, it really came down ferociously for about 5 minutes, now its calmer. A poor wheely bin went down. That's never happened before.

I was in the town at some bars and got caught in a real heavy downpour around 11:30 or so. Shipquay Street was a river and I saw some fella wringing his converse trainers out haha.

It has been calm enough here since that as far as I'm aware but I can hear the wind starting to pick up again I think.

Seems to easing a bit now, rain has stopped but still windy but not as bad, think I'll try go back asleep

I feel sorry for any poor souls who may be homeless tonight.

Just walked home. 25mins walk. Dry and fairly calm. Those two squawl lines were ferocious. Looking at the radar looks like everyone north of limerick got a touch.
Thanks to the radar I timed my work finish to 2.15am and got home dry. I'd be surprised if we don't hear of a few flash floods in the morning.
