Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

GoMo Data speed throttling after 80gb of data used

    There have been 1 or 2 reports of GoMo data throttling after someone has used their 80gb of data but they are buried in the numerous GoMo threads and not that easy to find so can we start this thread where people log their experiences of this?

    I know on 3 they do not throttle the speed after their 60gb of data is used and that 1 user has said the speed on GoMo has gone to 256kb once you reach the 80gb immediately but if anyone else has any experience of this then please share it here.

    GoMo with unlimited 4G data may be a viable much cheaper alternative for people on Virgin Media paying €60 - €70 a month so would be really good to capture everything here to enable people to make an informed decision.

    I can confirm that GoMo throttles the speed when you reach 80GB. My speed is now 0.2Mbps more or less unusable. I was getting speeds of 30Mbps before I hit the 80GB limit.

    I exceeded the 80GB unlimited data by tethering to my phone. It’s not just throttling the speed to maybe 2 or 3 Mbps it’s slowing it down so much that it’s totally unusable. They should really just be up front and advertise it as a hard 80GB limit after which you will have no data.

    I got an SMS when I hit 80% and then got another one when I hit 100% and got throttled straight away.

    Sorry to hear that selfbuilder1 - but afaik this has been mentioned repeatedly before the actual launch (ex.: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=111799571) and ^^ the mention of their T&Cs. It is not that they tried to hide this ...

    I understand the urge to have free internet for less than a tenner - but hmmmm, really :confused: :P

    Gomo's and Three's terms about data use are similar however I've never heard of Three throttling a user who exceeded their 60 GB limit. I know two people who regularly use c200 GB with their SIM inserted in a modem.

    Gomo Terms: "The fair usage threshold in relation to data usage for the SIM Only Service is 80GB. Should your data usage exceed 80GB in a billing cycle and we consider that other users are likely to be adversely affected; we reserve the right to limit the data service. We continuously monitor network performance to ensure that the SIM Only Service received by you is not impacted through a minority of users placing high demand on network resources (e.g. large bandwidths over long periods)."

    Three Terms: "Three continuously monitors network performance to ensure that the service received by customers is not impacted through a minority of users placing high demand on network resources (e.g. large bandwidths over long periods). Should your data usage exceed 60GB in a billing cycle for Bill pay customers (a 28 day period for prepay customers) and your usage affect other network users, we reserve the right to limit the Service."

    Gomo does not prohibit tethering as far as I can see however Three say they only allow it in specific circumstances. Neither of the people I know who are using a modem with the Three SIM have a "Three handset and Tablet bundle offering."

    Three and tethering: "The Service is available for use with your SIM Card in your handset only. Tethering or use of your handset as, or the SIM in conjunction with, a modem is not allowed, except in the case of Three customers who have subscribed to a Three handset and Tablet bundle offering. In the event that we identify that you have breached this condition, Three reserves the right to suspend, modify or restrict your use of the Service or to withdraw your access to the Service at its absolute discretion."

    80 GB comfortably exceeds my current personal requirements and I'm more than happy with it. I think it would be a pity though if Gomo imposed automatic throttling if there was no adverse affect on other users. If they must throttle, then something like 0.5 - 1 Mbps might be good.

    It's probably something like that alright. The Eir "all you can eat" offering has similar conditions to Gomo but I haven't heard of the 80 GB limit being enforced. I suppose they have to distinguish between their two products.

    It's all good though and a much needed kick up the ass to Vodafone, in particular.

    Fair enogh GOMO has a limit of 80gigs a month.. But they should not advertise it as unlimited 4G data if they literlly limit they speed to such a low state after the 80gig cap so you cant even browse the internet!

    0.10 of a mb is so low you cant even listen to an online radio station without it buffering pure joke!

    I can confirm also, throttled on myself this evening. Was very fast and happy with it, now .2mbps.

    Dont think I can get a full month at 80 so will be cancelling, pity.

    Fair enough like they limited our speeds for breaking the 80gb limit .. But they should not limit the speeds to an unusable state

    Can't believe people actually thought a tenner a month would give you free calls and texts and unlimited internet. Tethering it to your phone and watching films or streams on a laptop is taking the p*ss, and they stated clearly it would be throttled after 80 gigs, which would be fine for normal browsing and the odd youtube vid.

    What harm is there i was only testing the water with them just like many other people... But how can they be allowed to advertise there service being unlimited when it clearly isnt .. They should cleary state in there t&cs they once you reach the 80gb Cap your internet access will be cut off .. They state it will be slowed down... Lies ... There a big difference in slowing down something and not being literally able to use the thing!

    It's semantics really. And utterly pointless in getting in a bind over.
    Get two Sims, or pay for a service that does meet your needs.

    How do you know you have reached 80gb,I am asking this because the first time I used it I was getting good speed but now speed test comes up as very slow?

    Monitor your data usage on your phone. It may not be 100% accurate but it will give you a rough idea of your data usage.

    Just got a reply from gomo, saying my closest mast doesn't broadcast 4G, haha, had up 50mbps on thursday.

    Had typos in reply too.

    They are idiots, just cancel.

    The nearest mast is not always the source of ones signal. My nearest mast on the 3 network is 3 km from where I live but I am often connected to a mast 16 km away from me.

    I think I've reached the limited and speeds have been throttled to the point of being unusable.

    I can't even load a simple webpage like Google or Boards.

    It says connected but "no internet"

    Tried getting onto live chat to see if I did indeed reach the FUP upper limit, bit no-one can tell me.

    I can't find anywhere to check my current data balance or useage on my account.

    No-one on live chat can check my account for me and tell me, apparently they do not have that feature.

    Yet to rub salt into the wound after ending the chat sessions the automated response encourages users to sign up and register for a GoMo account so they can "track their useage" but GoMo are telling me they do not do this.

    Surprised there's no number to text to find out your remaining data balance.

    I have a dilemma now, if my data has indeed been cut off, will my EU roaming data still be intact also, or will this have been cut off too?

    I'm travelling tomorrow and have no way of knowing now if my EU roaming data will work once I am abroad. Pretty frustrating not knowing one way or the other before I travel, as if not, I'll have to source another SIM before I go, I'd like to know before I land so I'm not stuck abroad with no data on my phone.

    I know the service is cheap and is fantastic value, but it's very annoying and frustrating not being able to find out something as simple as your remaining data.

    10GB roaming is part of the 80GB
    It's not 80GB + 10GB roaming.
    If all 10GB gets used roaming then there's 70GB remaining for home use.

    So answer is you'll have no roaming data if all 80GB is used.

    Normally if you exceed data allowance you then get charged the domestic rate but with gomo there is no domestic rate.

    Regarding Data: My Experience is you will be slowed down when you have used between 50 and 60GB's of data not 80GB as advertised. And by 'slowed down' they mean completely crippled to 25Kb/s at best.

    Also they seem to be slowing the sending of the sim so you can't cancel within your cooling off period, it's already passed by the time you get the sim!

    The experience of previous posters on this thread seems to be at variance with yours, ie warning at 80% of limit and throttling at 100% of limit to 256 Kb/s or 0.2 Mb/s.

    Sorry, off topic.
    I was with Vodafone for two years. 60quid a month for 15gb.. I needed them for their coverage (after switching from three which were terrible). my last bill from Voda, because I went over the15gb (by alot apparently) was 179 euro.. I switched straight to gomo away. Really for 10 euro a month its a great service, the coverage is surprisingly good. I think giving out about getting throttled after 80gb for a tenner is madness. Not too long ago we were all on dial up.😂😂😂

    AFAIK, it's a calendar month, ie starts on the 1st of the month.

    Interesting, I'm now into the 2nd Gig after the 80Gbs based on when they sent me the 80% reminder, if its the calander month thing.

    That's a pity. I imagined that since billing is by calendar month, data usage would be counted on that basis too. Makes it that bit harder to monitor data usage.

    Yeah, I signed up on the 15/16 Oct, went live on the 16th I think, got the 80% message on the 13th of Nov, then possibly hit my new cycle on the 15/16th again, which is probably why I didn't get throttled.

    On another note, I was not impressed by the data speeds when I first got the SIM, was getting 2/3 MB/s, but now I seem to be hitting 35/40 in all my work locations in D1/D2 and at home in D2.

    We’re spoiled in this country when it comes to internet.

    Go to any US city and they have the worst service and WiFi within premises you can imagine

    The 8th of the month is when the money is taken from you credit/debit card. Bill issued on 1st of month & payment taken 7 days later.

    Signed up 2-3 days ago, received the sim just last night, and I already received %100 usage message from them.

    At only 14Gbs mind you.
    What the actual $hit?

    Bunch of boys at the trustpilot complaining about the same thing, being throttled way earlier than 80GB.

    Anyone else experience the same issue?

    Yes, I only had it a week when I received both messages, I was surprised (but not too shocked because I was tethering) and my device said I'd only used 49GB but its not accurate so I wasn't sure. I previously used three so I wasn't too sure how much data I was using. I've just gone back to my three sim.

    I'm considering getting another sim because the three coverage in our area is crap, gomo was much better. We're not in a fibre area and our line speeds are not great, normally around 2-3 mbps per second. It was anywhere between 0-10 mbps with three and around 25-30mbps with gomo.

    If you reach 80GB in any other way than tethering or streaming onto your television I'd be honestly worried about you. 80 gig is quite an enormous amount of data and we are talking about a small handheld device. Are people actually spending several hours per day looking at some numptie's videos on their phones?

    A single 4k Blu-ray can be about 59GB. 80GB is trivial to burn through.

    anyone using a mobile device to download UHD movies deserves to have their data throttled

    Yep.. this is why there's fixed line broadband. I understand that quality may vary and if you're out in the middle of nowhere you mightn't get it at all, but a 10 EUR mobile plan is not intended for massive torrenting etc

    Same people will complain about congestion on the network though!
