Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have the rear valance panel as centred as is possible to get now.. I’ll need to cut a slice out of the drivers side to bring the top edge in as it fits perfect on the bottom..

    IMG_9517.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Putt he bumper back on to see how it lines up with the valance panel

    IMG_9509.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9507.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Test fit both bootlids to see which on I go with, the grey one is the original off the car & I think that’s the one I’ll use

    IMG_9512.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9510.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Attached the bootlid onto the hinges again & fitted the rear spoiler so I can be sure that it still fits when properly installed

    IMG_9521.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9520.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9519.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I bolted up the front guards fully this time & installed the NOS front lower valance panel that I have… this all lines up perfectly

I have the bonnet mostly right, just need a second set of hands to help as it’s a heavy thing to move about on your own & you can only loosen off the mounting bolts a tiny amount when adjusting it… but I know I can get it right, just have two little dents & some pin hole rust to sort on the front corners

    IMG_9526.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9525.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9524.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Got the front bumper back on… again not really a one man job but it’s on now & all lines up perfectly

    IMG_9531.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9527.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I couldn’t find my original bonnet catch stay for a while, so had bolted on a spare I had laying about off an XC model Coupe

    IMG_9532.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

This has an extra section to support the different shaped XC grille so I couldn’t fit the XB grille in

    IMG_9533.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Went digging thru some old boxes & found the correct part

    IMG_9534.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now the grille slots in nicely

    IMG_9537.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then I wheeled the old girl out into the sun for no reason at all other than I want to sit in the evening sun looking at her…..

    IMG_9544.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9543.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9542.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9541.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9540.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9539.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9538.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Right so what’s left… I have a door hinge pin kit to install as both doors sag when you open them as they weigh a ton & the old pins have worn over the last 45 years

    IMG_9496.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I have a little work to do to finish off the rear valance panel, there are some tiny holes in the roof drip rails that I’ve been putting fixing as that metal will be uber thin & a total pain to weld…the driver’s door gaps are shocking, the door had soooo much bog on it to correct that when I took the car apart, but I’ll look to weld new metal to the leading edge & extend the door correctly, there are also a few dents here & there that I’ll fix with my dent puller & then I think I’ve run out of stuff to do…

I’ll call my painter today (it’s Monday already here in OZ) & get him to come around & give his opinion on what needs doing… I think her days here in my shed are numbered now…

Clear skies and warm sunshine !!

Oh.. and the car look amazing as well :D

I’m trying to decide if I should fit the reverse hood scoop that the XC Cobra’s & the racing Coupes had back in the late 70’s…..

Adds to the aggressive stance of the car, love an ould scoop or three ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭quietsailor

Definitely add the reverse scoop - it's a muscle car and it makes it look more muscular. I don't want to go quoting all the pics you've uploaded recently as I'll fill the thread needlessly but thank you for posting all these - it gives us something to look at in this miserable weather

Now just to be clear, I won’t be cutting up my perfect GT bonnet to fit this scoop.. I have a second bonnet with a “shaker” hole already cut into it, I just need to make up a section to replace the rust I cut off of it…. I just need to cut the square hole in my spare bonnet into a larger round one to allow a high rise air cleaner to poke thru into the scoop…

    IMG_9554.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

So in the end I’ll have two painted bonnets, one with the scoop & one without.. just need to decide which one to run from day one as swapping them over will be a pain

Would you not be better off saving that bonnet so that you can cut it up to fit the supercharger and intake through it?!

Hmmmm... no, that's very illegal here now & any cars you see with a set up like that at car shows normally are trailered to the show & back.

If I had a blower sticking out of the bonnet it would be a huge risk of being stopped & fined for having a non-roadworthy car every time & having the car put off the road until I fixed it.. get done for the same offence multiple times & they'll start to impound the car... get the wrong cop who wants to book you under the Australian "Hoon" laws & the ultimate penalty is they can crush your car...

Plus I do have a 3rd bonnet at a mates place I could use... Note to self.. I must go collect that, think I still have 3 doors there too & the car original engine block

    Absolute spoilsports.
I bought my 2002Tii in Melbourne. In the 2 years I owned it in Aus, I never managed to get it past inspection.
Brought it to Ireland and had it on the road in a few days. Slightly different standards!

I just remembered that I needed to drill the mounting holes on the firewall for the strut tower brace set up that I have

    IMG_9556.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9555.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Measured up & drilled the holes, nice simple job

    IMG_9557.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9558.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I have to decide what to do with this bracket & the ones that mount to the top of the strut towers… I can either have them painted the same colour as the car to blend them in or have them chromed to match the actual strut braces that are chrome… decisions decisions decisions

I needed to pull the dent out of the bottom of the rear Qtr panel before fixing the valance panel overhang… I had thought that this was a NOS panel but on closer inspection it’s not it’s a repop panel so I don’t mind doing some metal work on it.. but first that dent

    IMG_9559.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Used my weld on dent puller to attach the pull tab

    IMG_9560.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

With the dent pulled out I worked out that I needed to shorten the valance panel by 2mm so I cut the end off & rewelded it back on… you can see the join line of the weld still here

    IMG_9563.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9562.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

With that final piece of welding done I’m finished….. nope… really I am this time….

I’ve pushed her out of the Skunk Works shed & took her on the longest journey she’s had in years… up to the front garage

    IMG_9565.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9568.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9566.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now she sits in the front garage… The tow truck is booked for tomorrow morning now to take her to her new home for the next few months as she gets prepped & painted

Exciting stuff! Not that it wasn't exciting before, of course.

    That grill is so cool.

Is it wrong that I miss her already? She’s only been gone 90 minutes…….

    XB.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB3.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ll go & see the painter & her this afternoon after work to see how she settled into her new temp home….. first time she’s been off my property since April 2015….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭quietsailor

Congratulations, that's a huge milestone - that has to be hte halfway point of the build, you're putting things back onto the car from here o!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

I’m not sure how much I’ll be posting in this thread now until the car is back… she’s at her new home in the painters place now & whilst I’m happy to share many pics of my shed & it’s contents I’m not keen on sharing someone else’s…. I have permission to share these as there is no one else’s car being work on here this week…

    XB6.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB5.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

We’re starting at the boot end & we’ll be working our way forward… so the hinge spring bars are back in now & the new rubber will be fit so that we’re setting the gaps & the fitment correctly

    XB7.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

As I said the updates will become less frequent now & really only be for the big milestones… sections in finished primer ect & of course the actual bits when we get shiny paint on.. right I’m off to work on my GTO again now

That's more than fair enough, I'd be annoyed too if even a friend shared pictures of my tools across the internet. But please do post any updates you can, I love seeing the work getting finished and I don't even own the car!

I know I said I wouldn’t really look to flood this thread with lots of pics from the painters place, but I was there this afternoon & he’s been “playing” with the boot fitment… his word not mine. It’s looking a million times better that I had it.. the gaps are still not perfect he says but they are pretty bloody good… we have the rubber on now to make sure the gaps & boot lid heights are what they will be

    XB9.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB5(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB1(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

He’s sliced off a few mm of boot lid metal as it wasn’t lined up perfectly with the Qtr panel

    XB4(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

He’s used a Porta-Power ram to push the rear light panel out about 2mm so that it’s perfectly straight now

    XB8.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Same tool has been used to raise up this section of the rear Qtr panel so that it’s perfectly aligned to the boot lid

    XB6(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

He’s also been playing with the Qtr to door gap too, I was around to bring him the door rubber to help set this gap too…

    XB3(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB2(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now ignore the front guard sitting too low… the coke bottle body line is looking really good across the door to the Qtr panel now

    XB7(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now I get that it’s hard from pics on a forum to see the small differences as the work is done, so do people want me to keep updating this thread with this detail or do you just want major updates like “here’s the painted car”?

The metal finishing work has been powering on now on the XB for a week or two… she’s looking great, there is something about shiny metal that just looks awesome.. I did joke that we should just polish the metal & clear over it now..

    5.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    4.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    3.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    1.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’m trying to decide now what rear light option to go for… the XB should have a vertical rear light cluster, here is the frame that bolts in & I have new lenses that I can add

    6.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

However when I bought the car she had the earlier XA lights that are sloped & not vertical… I think I’m leaning towards restoring these XA lights & going with them again…

    9.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    8.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I was away on a bit of a road trip (I’ll update a thread later this week to cover that) & I was sent these update pics over the weekend…. I’ll try & get around to see her tomorrow now.. but the first layer of the etch primer is now on the drivers side, the rear end & the roof… the passenger side isn’t done yet but it’s really nice to see her in one colour even if it’s only from one side

    XB3(2).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB1(2).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The primer looks killer on it.. amazing transformation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

Went around to see the XB after work yesterday & the drivers side rear Qtr is almost at a standard that my painter is happy with…. The next step will be a high fill primer that can be blocked back to make all the lines sharp, for me the lines are looking awesome & so pronounced now… but apparently they’ll get better

    XB9(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB8(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB11.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB10.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

He’s obsessing a lot with the boot lid fitment & the gaps here… don’t worry the majority of this filler will end up on the floor, he’s only starting the blocking/sanding process so it looks pretty caked on here

    XB14.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB13.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB12.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB16.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB15.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Been around to see the XB to drop off some chrome trim & the door mirrors tonight, the arse end & the drivers side are pretty much finished metal & filler work now… there is still that big blob of filler on the front of the front guard to be sanded back tomorrow, but my painter tells me that this whole side & the arse end will be in final primer by the end of next week…. The fact that so much of this car is proper metal finished & needs no filler is a testament to his skill, it’s a stark contrast to the US car restoration shows where you see them put a qtr inch of filler across the whole car & then sand it back to a nice even eight inch of final filler across the whole $250k show car finish…

    XB19.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The captive bolts inside my driver’s side mirror had broken off again when I removed it… but as luck would have it I’ve been taking so long to restore this car that you can now get the mirrors new, so I have a shiny new perfect drivers side mirror to go on

    XB23.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB22.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ve also ordered a complete front panel hardware kit, so all new nuts, bolts & screws of the correct size & type to fit..

    XB20.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB21.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Today the boot lid & the drivers side hanging panels came off… they are now coated in high fill primer

    XB31.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Under the rear window, around the boot lid & the drivers side Qtr panel & sill are now also coated in high fill

    XB32.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then it was reassembly time… so door back on

    XB34.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB33.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    Front guard back on

    XB27.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    Then the boot lid

    XB24.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

As of now the drivers side is finished in high fill… the plan now is to spin her around & do all the same work on the passenger side & the engine bay… the next big mile stone will be the whole car in this same high fill

    XB30.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB29.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB28.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Even though this is rough high fill… she looks awesome from this side all being the one colour & with such perfect panel gaps….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

I was dropping some bits off to the painter tonight after work & the drivers side & boot area now have the guide coat on too… this is the light black overspray that goes on over the primer so you have a guide to help you when your block sanding back the paint.

I have always had a lot of interest in war history & the very first thing that popped into my head when I saw the car tonight was the Luftwaffe paint scheme for the ME109 during WWII…

    XB41.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB37.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB35.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB40.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB36.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

One of the bits I brought around was the rear wing, mine is a genuine GT race item that is aluminium & has an adjustable rake angle.. played with the angle for a while & I think we’ve settled on this… now it’s important to remember that this wing most likely does three fifths of five eights of ****all to the downforce or handling for this car

Wing really sets it off right.

I'm sure that's a big wing but it looks tiny on that car!

Even though this is rough high fill… she looks awesome from this side all being the one colour & with such perfect panel gaps….

Not just the panel gaps but the lines of the car are running so well across the front, door and rear panels. That painter is a craftsman, not just a painter

I agree 1000% he is a perfectionist, I'm so glad I was introduced to him... he is definitely the right guy to be painting my cars. I'm paying a little more for him that I could have gotten from a bigger shop, but they would have been finished by now & the job wouldn't have been half as good as this will be.

Spent a bit of time with the painter… we spent ages getting the boot springs right, I wasn’t taking pics as I didn’t want to be in his way.. but I’ll get some pics this week of the bits & explain what we where doing… but now we’re on to fixing the bumper gaps & the lower valance panel gaps

    XB45.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB44.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The bumper is sitting a few mm too high, so that’s easily fixed by just putting a washer between the bumper & the rear panel behind where the top bolt goes thru, but we might adjust the brackets instead.. we’ll see

    XB46.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

My painter hates the gap between the bottom of the bumper & the lower valance panel… it is huge

    XB43.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB47.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I do have another panel the one that came off the car so we’re thinking of splicing in a section of metal to make the lower panel taller… Oh & here is the same panel & gap from my mates original unrestored XB, you can see that this is factory & not something I’ve done wrong

Just got some midweek progress pics sent thru by my painter, the car is flipped around & he’s now working on the passenger side panels… I’ll try & swing past after work on Friday & see how it’s going…

It's funny - on your friends car the gap doesn't look that bad but on your car it does.

I think that if the arse end of my car was all painted in the same colour then the gap wouldn't look as bad as it does right now... plus my car is elevated up on a scissor lift.. in reality you'll never see the gap head on unless you are laying on the ground behind the car for some odd reason.

This week the passenger side rear Qtr was finished… this panel was the worst so it seems so it took a few days to get to this point, as you can see there is more filler or bog if you like on this panel than we had on the others, but it’s still very little & less than a mm thick now that it’s all sanded back…

    XB54(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    X55.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then it was given a coat of primer… the back in broken so to speak now in this process…

    XB58.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB57.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB56.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB55.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The door & the front guard won’t take long to get to this stage also… then we’re onto the bonnet & the engine bay, the passenger side front corner of the bonnet had a little too much flex in it, when we did some investigation we found that it’s been damaged in the past & not repaired just bogged & painted over so now we know we have a small repair to make here too

    XB59.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Sooooo…. It’s crunch time now… I need to pick a final colour for the car as my painter is confident that he’ll be painting the inside of the car & the inner jams etc next month…. I think I have the final colour picked out in my mind, but I’ll now no doubt obsess on it all weekend….

Spent a chunk of time helping work on the door & learning some great tips on how to get the original lines back into the metal…

    XB60.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

This involved using a proper professional dent puller.. unlike the big yellow stud gun that you’ve seen me use before, this machine is amazing

    XB62.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The design of this handle means that you can simple touch the electrode (the one with the earth wire attached) to the metal & it welds on so you can just pull the whole handle & it pulls the metal, so unlike the stud gun I have you don’t use a slide hammer to pull.

    XB63.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

This means it’s so much more versatile & you just twist the handle to break the weld off.. this means you can do hundreds of gentle pulls in the one area without damaging the metal

    XB64.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The other metal knob on the handle is used as a shrinker on metal.. so if you do overwork the metal pulling you can tighten it back up with the shrinker… this machine is super simple to use & gives awesome results..

We’re also up to gap measurements now… so we’ve settled on 5.5mm now as that will come down to 4.5mm after paint… so my painter had me going over the whole car with a set of vernier calipers marking high & low spots… I think this insane but I guess it’ll all be worth it in the end

That painter really REALLY wants to get the car looking perfect!

I popped around the other night for a beer with my painter & I watched him spend more time than a sane man should with a hammer & dolly & a metal file working on getting the fitment of the door handles perfect…

    XB66.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB65.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

His wife thinks that this must be his favourite car of all time to work on as she sees him put more effort into this than any of Porsches or Ferrari’s he’s had come thru in the last few years.

I’ve been told that my final final colour choice has to be made by Monday now as he needs to order paint & then he wants to start painting the inside & the inner jams etc… sooooo I’ve been thinking long & hard on this for a while now & I think I’ve settled on my final colour choice… I’m going with the same Red that Allan Moffat used on his 1969 Trans Am Mustang that he raced here in Aus… (spoiler alert it’s not a Ford Red) This is also the colour that Eric Bana based his “Love the Beast” XB on.

Not that its any of my business but great colour choice - it really suited the car in Love the Beast

Big news… well for me anyway, the passenger side is now finished… this technically means the body is finished I guess. The rear Qtr was taken back to bare metal again as he just wasn’t happy with the body line, but now it all done & it looks awesome

    XB67.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB69.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB68.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB70.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

There is a tiny bit of block sanding to be done to ensure the gaps & edges all line up then the hanging panels can all come off & won’t go back on until they are painted. The next job is the engine bay & the bonnet & then she’s ready for paint… I’ve picked the actual paint now, meaning I have the actual paint code picked out now.. so we may even start to see colour going on the inside & in the jams etc..

The final final sanding guide coat has gone on & is in fact almost off now…

    XB73.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB72.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB71.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB75.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    XB74.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I know you can’t feel the pics above but this finish is laser straight & smoother than a recently smoothed out smooth thing… it’s actually slippery under the hand

    XB76.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The next step I’m told is that the hanging panels can come off & then the bodyshell will be painted in the final primer layer that will be the last layer of prep before the actual colour goes on, the hanging panels will be painted off the car & will only go back on again now during the final assembly.
