Ryan Tubridy has promised that tonight's Late Late Show tribute to Gay Byrne will be "really special".

The veteran broadcaster passed away on Monday, November 4, after a long illness.

Tubridy saluted his "great friend" and "magnificent mentor" on his RTÉ Radio 1 programme on Tuesday morning ahead of tonight's show. He described the Late Late tribute programme as "a happy wake".

Speaking to The Today Show's Brenda Donohue ahead of the show, Tubridy said: "Gay was a once off, so tonight is a once off.

"It makes perfect sense that we gather the troops, gather the family, the friends and to say a final thank you. Tonight isn't going to be maudlin, or morose, or mawkish, it's going to be upbeat, it's going to be fun."

The 90-minute live special on RTÉ One at 9:35pm will feature contributions from Gay Byrne's friends and colleagues across the world of entertainment and beyond, including Bob Geldof, Andrea Corr, Pat Kenny, John Sheahan and Mary McAleese.

Also appearing will be President Michael D Higgins, Joe Duffy, Sharon Shannon, John Sheahan, Finbar Furey, Tommy Tiernan, Pat Shortt, Eamon Dunphy, Twink and Mary Black.

    Fr Brian D’arcy.

All Irish celebrities live in the same parish and Fr Brian is the curate.

The Protestant ones live elsewhere, but it doesn't matter because they're going to hell anyway.

Could they put together a show featuring some of his best interviews? I'd watch that more than this programme tonight.

It's just going to be a big circle jerk. Everybody trying to out-cliché each other.

Jeepers, I still remember the night Nell Mc Caffery described painting the kitchen in her bra and knickers, in a very successful rebalancing of an American twitess trying to srll a book.

"Tonight isn't going to be maudlin, or morose, or mawkish" - as opposed to every other late late show

I’d say it will go on a lot longer than the scheduled 90 minutes.
Like so many, I grew up watching Gay Byrne..... and I know that same sentence is being said by thousands today and yesterday but it is really true in a way.
I was born in the early 70’s and I remember where exactly I was watching several episodes over the years, and who I was with... In my Granny’s (RIP) or at home with my Dad (RIP) etc.
I always liked Gay and I was genuinely sad yesterday when I heard the news. I hope tonight will be a great tribute to him.

    Doubt it will go longer

Tubridy is not able to deal with long form interviews. He is borderline something something

So it will end at the appointed time. Wait and see.

Why could Fredo not step aside this Friday with his usual rubbish and let a tribute to The Godfather happen then?

Tuesday night is not the place for this

    He is missed terribly

Every Friday night when that streak of misery opens his mouth to introduce the line up

It hits home what was lost

    The Long Streak of Piss

    And

    Fat Joe

    Will be front and centre

It’s propaganda for their obscene fees

Remember the night he rang the woman at her daughters wake. Handled it well.

Imagine that happened tubs and the questions he’d ask.

Have heard it a lot now, Gay thinking it is a football player. Joe telling the same mawkish stuff over and over. Gays passing has put the spotlight on Tubridy and how awful the late late show is now and how Tubridy for a huge fee stands over the fact that Francis Brennan is on his show every second week.
