Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My first attempt at a shopping list.

    Long sword 10 GP
    Shield 10 GP
    5 x Javelin 5 GP
    Padded armour 4 GP
4 days of preserved rations 2 GP
    Backpack 2 GP
    Rope 1 GP
    waterskins 1 GP
    2 x large sacks 4 SP

money left over. 14 GP 6 SP left.

    Total weight 55lbs

    Encumbrance. +1
    9 different items.

In order to reduce encumbrance, one person could hold all the large sacks until they are needed and all the ropes.
As i'm still in 0-1 Encumbrance, I can hold others large sacks or ropes with no penalty to me, and it'll reduce yours by 2 different items.

Okey Dokey. So far I have :

    Backpack - 2GP
    Sack, Large x 2 - 0.4

    Long Sword - 10 GP
    Shield - 10 GP
    Padded Armour - 4GP

    Crowbar - 2GP
    Rope, hemp - 1GP
    Torches x 24 - 0.9GP

    Waterskin - 1gp
    Preserved Rations x 5 - 2.5gp

    33.8 GP spent.
    16.2 GP left.

If anyone can spot me 10 GP, I'll boost that to Studded Leather armour and will promise to stick my studded chest between you and an orc.

However, would we be better off putting that money towards a short bow for Elin or Arry? We're a bit light on ranged options.

Range weapons is the reason I picked up 5 x javelins.
While the enemy is outside the long sword range, we could be hurling javelins at them. as long as we pick them up afterwards, 5 should be plenty.

Here is my list for Arry:

    Sling+ 10 bullets- 2 gp
    Studded leather-30 gp
    Dagger- 3 gp
    Backpack -2 gp 2
    Rations x6- 3gp
    Sack, large x2- 4 sp
    Flask - 3 cp
    Flint and steel- 2 gp
    Rope, hemp - 1 gp
    Dartsx8-4 gp

So left over I have 6GP and a fair bit of sp/cp.

Is it fair to assume that things like my darts and dagger come with a way to carry them on my person such as a belt or pouch?

I get that sp and cp mean silver piece and copper piece but what is EP and PP? They are listed under gold and treasure on my generated character sheet

Sorry for what may be very silly questions

E is Electrum, P is Platinum. Electrum is an old currency not in circulation in 5e and Platinum is just rare, might be different in 1e. I would think most of our money will be Gold, Silver and Copper though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭sKeith

If GP is a euro Electrum is like a 50cent piece and Plantinum is like a tenner.

Pg. 14 of the rule book.

Where are you finding the prices for all these?

I'll answer Banjo's questions and start the game in the next two-four hours.

We'll do shopping in game, just to get to know the city. The city's name will actually be Soetrard and the first post will be a little intro to it, leading to the tavern where you guys start off, a bit of in character banter can establish who you are and if any of you know each other.

The character sheet PDF I got using the generator posted by Fourier gave me:
    CP: 1500
    SP: 80
    EP: 9
    GP: 56
    PP: 3

What number should I have been working from?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭sKeith

50 gold pieces to spend in the shop in town.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 42,602 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lord TSC

I think Fourier said we'd have 50 GP to start things off.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭sKeith

We start with an empty inventory and unarmed and unprepared. We need to buy everything we need from those 50 GP.

  • Registered Users Posts: 42 The Soup King

    Ah okay my bad.
I also just realized I did the maths wrong anyway...off with the fairies today :p

I can't see any weapon holsters or the like in the item list. Does this mean i have to keep my darts, sling and dagger in my backpack?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

Arrows come in a quiver. Think it's fair to assume your darts are in a bitchin' bandolier!

On javelins, I had hoped to do the same with a sling but it takes a whole round to switch out. In movement terms though that's forever. I don't know if you can throw one far enough and switch in the time to be ready

what do you mean by switch out.
when an encounter happens, a range die is thrown, 2d6x10, is this not figured into our battles? if they start out far away, would they not have to close in to us to start battling? if it is, then we could throw a volley when they are out of close encounter range and when they get in closer we attack with long sword. if range has no effect, then yes, the javelins would be a waste of time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭sKeith

if they start 100 feet away from us, we can back away at 60 feet per round without combat penalty, they could close in at 120 feet but would give up their attack in order to do so, if they want to attack, they could only close in at 60 feet per turn, so we can keep them out of close range by backing away and using ranged weapons unless they committed to catching us by giving up their attack, so we would then have ability to attck them then at close quarters first. maybe i am taking this up wrong but the combat example given in the rules does not give a ranged example, only a close quarters example.

You've done this before! Bagsy being on your team!

I may drop my rope so, buy a grappling hook to stick on the end of yours and throw a few javelins in my satchel.

Can people see if they can sign up to Rollz.org, just use your boards name and then join the chat room:
    Boards.ie D&D

Whenever I ask for a roll just write a quick description first, so I know what situation it related to, thanks.

By the way there are styles to this. Some prefer less posts which are longer, others prefer quick short posts in plenty. Think of it as reflecting how chatty the characters are.

Logged on to Rolz. So is everything a roll? I mean, how do you know when to stop talking and let the LabLord tell you if it worked?

Eg. I was going to accidentally elbow someone then realised I was in danger of writing my guy doing something clumsy even though his Dex is high. But then, do I get to decide whether I successfully don't do something oafish? Is that up to the dice?

I had no idea how tiny my place in the universe was till this thread...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭Mollyb60

Lol Banjo calm down. It'll be grand. You can basically do anything you like but most of the big stuff will be determined by a dice roll. If you elbowed someone in a bar the worst that could happen would be to start a brawl. Lol.
You could Pm Fourier to check before you do something stupid if you want to make sure you wont kill yourself. But i think most GMs will tell you to take your chances.

Also Fourier are you conna do the rolling for us through that rolz site? I'll try log in in work but i have a feeling work will block it. If so I'll try it on the phone.

Banjo I know you were worried about too many questions, please don't be, the questions often touch on fundamental issues of game design.

    Short answer:
You say what you do and there will only be a roll if I ask for it. So basically you don't need to worry about when to roll.

There is an ambiguity here of course, you might describe something like "I jump over the wall and land on the other side", which I might decide needs a roll. In that case I'll just say:
OOC: That wall jump requires a roll against your DEX

People acting ahead of the rolls happens all the time, even in face to face games, so no need to worry.
    Banjo wrote: »

I'd say you're doing things correctly, roleplaying your character in accordance with their stats. Again, you get to decide it, unless I say otherwise.

To "reveal" my thinking as GM, something like the above is consistent with the character, is of low consequence to the story and there isn't really major ambiguity about it occurring, so I wouldn't ask for a roll.

I asked sKeith for a CON roll because failing would have involved him vomiting onto the table and holding your liquor is more "random" in terms of success, i.e. story consequence and some randomness.

Obviously this is subjectively determined by me and some games try to avoid this by having "when to roll" more directly built into the rules. In my experience this slows down the game for no real benefit and requires the players to remember when to roll which I think is too much of a burden, but others may feel differently.

Anybody who would prefer me to roll for them or doesn't care about rolling themselves, just send me a PM. I'll just automatically post the fact that roll was required, the results and the consequences into the thread.
