Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Colposcopy exam - what to expect

    I have a colposcopy appointment next week (HPV positive) and to say that I'm nervous is an understatement.

    I'm not looking for any medical advice, but could anyone who's been through same please advise me of what I can expect during the appointment?

    I'm a complete wuss when it comes to pain, would I be OK to take paracetamol and / or ibuprofen before going on?

    How much does it hurt if I need to have a biopsy taken?

    I'm really nervous about this.

    I’ve had this a few times and it was fine. Ok, there’s not a lot of dignity but other than that it’s fine!

    You’ll be in a chair with your legs in stirrups. You’ll have a hospital gown on. It’s mostly like a smear test but if they biopsy you’ll feel a sharp short pain. For me it was only seconds. I had mild crampy abdominal pain for a few hours afterwards. I had a light bit of spotting afterwards too but that was only on the day of the procedure itself.

    I had it done first thing in the morning and was back at work two hours later.

    Make sure you eat breakfast. I skipped breakfast before mine because I was nervous and I got a bit faint - the nurses said I should have made sure to eat something that morning, especially since I'm prone to nerves.

    They'll offer you pads as there can be a bit of bleeding if they take a biopsy - the hospital ones are very thick so if you're going back to work afterwards I'd advise bringing your own pads.

    About the painkillers I'm sure it's fine to take some, but in my case I was waiting in the waiting room for quite a long time so I'd wait until you're actually called into the exam room before taking anything.
