Fair point re Smartless. I'm a huge Bateman fan and find he moves it along and is very quick and funny etc. It gets better. At first they hadn't much of a clue and made fun out of themselves doing a podcast. But nowadays its a slicker show. Currently listening to the Paul McCartney Ep. Really good chat. Not much messing. Glad you like em

I have been listening from the start, but my commute got shorter a few years ago and I had to reduce the frequency I add the AE episodes to my Up Next list, otherwise I'd never get to listen to my other podcasts. I find it very hard to skip any as they're all interesting, even if I didn't previously know the guest.

I must try adding Smartless again - the ones I had listened to were very early on (Dax and RDJ)

I have 16mins left on the final episode. Can't understand how it is so popular? I think it won awards? Nothing actually happens in it. Nothing

But I kept on listening waiting for the 'Gold' moment.
I think it could have been done in 3 or 4 episodes max.
I did enjoy the audio clips of John rambling on the phone or being recorded.
What have I missed? I need to know haha. Like I said it is/was very popular.

I don’t know what to tell you if you didn’t get S-Town. The story is good but the characters and their way of life is what I loved. Listened to it when it was coming out weekly and listened again about 6 months ago and it was great the second time around too.

Why continue listening to a podcast you’re not enjoying? Podcasts are one thing in life that most people won’t listen to or talk about anyway. It’s not like a blockbuster movie or tv series where everyone’s talking about it.

There’s no test at the end of the podcast. If you enjoy it, listen on. If you don’t enjoy it, find one you like. The last thing I want a podcast to be is a commitment.

Loving the latest episodes on "Real dictators" this 4 part is on general tojo of japan around ww2. Fascinating stuff on japan and their beliefs as far back as the samurai

Exactly, S-Town is about the characters, primarily the main character and the way that the podcast changed completely due to what happened with the main character.

I found the character John B. McLemore fascinating and the bizarre relationship with the people he knew, the people looking for "the gold", his sexuality, the unusual phone-call conversations etc

It was just all very unique.

It's not about the plot but rather the experience.

I said that it wouldn't work for everyone.

But for the people for whom it does, it usually leaves a big impression.

The association with Serial is stupid imo - they had some of the same producers but are nothing to do with each other really and not at all alike.

I love Real Dictators, got it from a boards recommendation too. If you liked that one, Hardcore History, the latest series is Supernova in the East, which goes into more detail into Japan, Tojo and WW2. Definitely worth a listen. The first episode starts off explaning how Japanese people were such nationalists and would do anything for the country. They're long episodes, but brilliantly told.

Adam Buxton’s interview with Paul McCartney is well worth a listen. McCartney is charming and generous as an interviewee in a way that I really didn’t expect for such an enormous star.

I started one this morning for the first time but found it very rambling and gave up after 15 minutes. Might try again sometime.

By contrast, I quite like Sh*te Talk, a good mix of informative and entertaining.

I too gave up of Celtic Holocaust after about 15 mins, as you said he was rambling.
Armageddon and Supernova in the East are brilliant.

But the best of them all from Hardcore history is the standalone story of The Münster Rebellion, "Prophets of Doom" or something like that it's called.

It's easley the best single episode podcast I have heard. I was aware of the story from an earlier "In our time" podcast but this one went way further.

These are really good I must add - Chris Kirkland's issue with depression and the Ian Dowie one were eye openers.

It's one of the best podcasts out there, only discovered it recently. So far have listened to the episodes with David O Doherty, Aisling Bea & Romesh Ranganathan. Laughing out load at regular intervals during each episode.

The Rest is History is a fantastic newish history podcast that was brought to my attention.

Two historians - one specialising in ancient, the other in modern - have a discussion on different historical topics: civil wars, what constitutes historical greatness - that kind of thing. The two guys are very knowledgeable, but come at things from slightly different perspectives, which can compliment and differ. One can talk about an issue in terms of root causes and then the other can provide nuances that alter or enrich that perspective.

Excellent, excellent, podcast from what I've listened to so far.

That sounds excellent. The real antidote to what I’ve getting recently. Has anyone else noticed the increased usage of low quality comedians in podcast, particularly since the pandemic?

I like history shows like this one called You’re Dead to Me by the BBC. It’s a show where they have a host, an expert in a historical topic and a naive layman comedian who chips in witty observations and then they test how much the comedian has learned.

But since comedians can’t work because of the pandemic, they have been getting bigger and bigger roles in otherwise good shows.

Really interesting topic about a character from Ancient Rome. But the comedian keeps breaking up the flow with terrible jokes and often just interrupting to restate what the expert has told us. Total nuisance.

Edit. I’m listening to the most recent one about Pompeii, right now, and it’s very good. Great recommendation.

Very detailed. Have learned a lot about the 1848 revolutions in Europe.
