Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Latest test at 14.29, speeds starting to dip from 40 up all the time..
28 last night, now this, being throttled maybe?

The simplest solution is usually the correct one - Contention.

    B315 4G router on 3

Yeah, could be contention for the weekend.

Been mostly between 10 and 30 down all day (from 40 to 80 down yesterday) with a few dips to 8-10 down.
    Upload fine.

    Latest test;

    B315 4G router on 3
    4th day of testing

Latest test in the evening, a little bit slower, and I think this is the last day of testing.
I will hit the limit of 60GB tomorrow, so I will see what happens.
Hopefully I can stay on the payg sim, or switch to the contract one, and this router will service as a wifi point.

Using a PAYG sim in a TP-Link router in the house connected to a directional antenna while waiting on the FTTH to arrive. Was having issues the last day or two so put the sim in the phone and tested when out and about yesterday - https://www.speedtest.net/result/a/4580448409 !

Is there anyway to know what mast this would be connecting to? Spent a bit of time on the roof yesterday pointing antenna in different directions but can't get near that speed.

Going in the opposite direction (when testing with phone) got me this - https://www.speedtest.net/result/a/4580451366

Looking on the comreg siteviewer it does not have the local mast as LTE enabled although not sure how accurate the site is, maybe my setup is the limiting factor?

D'oh, should have thought of that as it is on the phone! Will give it a try later.

Killybegs got a very nice speed upgrade on the Three network recently. Usually when I'm waiting in queue at the chemist, I run a speed test. The left result is about a month ago and it was typical to get around the mid 20s. So it was quite a surprise to see the needle go past 150 today, especially close to 6pm (left time is before DST).

    4795985747.png4865440464.png

I tried running a few more tests outside afterwarts, but didn't get anything higher. TestMy linear gave me 150Mbps (below) with its Frankfurt server and Netflix's Fast App gave me 130Mbps.

There's a mast just a couple of hundred yards away from the house. Can drop into the 40s at busier times, but pretty good overall.

The upload speed higher than the download speed tends to show that the mast is well overloaded with users.

Been a while since I did a speed test. Vodafone seems to have upgraded one of the masts to 4G close to me which my router automatically connects to. Only getting 2 bars but speeds are much better.

Fairly typical evening three connection on 4G with 2 bars signal strength from a mast that is god knows where, isn't line of site and is probably about 3 or more miles away.

Yikes, a while since I posted here!

I'd like to congratulate 3 on successfully bringing me back to download speeds of 30 years ago. It's been like this almost every evening for the last few days.

How come, even if 4G is really fast, I get dropped frames whilst I stream via twitch? Maybe my bitrate is too high or something.. Although there should be no dropped frames when PC is next to my phone on a tether. Any ideas?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 678 ✭✭✭kevovek

what kind of speeds do you get? I stream on 4G at 3000Kbps used to stream at 2500Kbps but only in the last 2 months have I been able to stream without dropping frames. This is about average for me it can hit as high as 70 to 80 at times or as low as 10 -15 in the evening. But my upload stays much the same 8405509805.png

Wireless technology wifi or 4g/3g can be prone to dropped packets or latency

a good latency check that I used to use on 3g (years before 4g for example) to keep the connection alive and to check ping (even today) can be done via a cmd prompt with the following commands:

    ping google.ie

    ping google.ie -t

The first one sends 4 packets of 32 kilobytes of test data
The second one runs in the same way except it keeps sending beyond 4 (indefinite I think). You can use any website to type in by the way - but some sites block this kind of packets by default so you can test which sites to use for this command.

Three never ceases to amaze. Around prime time o'clock this happens every day. You know it's bad when the ads don't even load.

It's like having unlimited miles in a car but no petrol :pac:

It's like I'm back in 1994. Is there actually anything that can be done?

Amen to that Brother :p Am in the exact same boat. Nothing short of increased capacity and backhaul maybe? Cells are limited to certain bandwidth values, and even on 4g - it is shared between users but not evenly. The closer you are the better chances you may have. But if you have the majority of users close to you or the cell then even close proximity wont work.

Cell shrinkage isnt as bad on 4g but still those figures of yours are terrible - worse than 3g. I tend to switch over to 3g during peak hours in the off chance that there are less users on 3g than 4g - therefore less conjestion

On three I also find switching apns can up the speed a bit but not much, only from nothing to just enough to load the pages here.

Yeah, I've tried switching and it's just as bad. It's just heavily congested from 5-11 or so and barely usable. Crazy it's THAT bad though.

I moved from a 50Gb Eir package, which was fine, even at peak times, to 3 unlimited with the new 4G+ router and it's just useless really. great data limit but wouldn't even able to get close to it as it's so bad.

I'm considering using both routers now. An Eir 50Gb package for normal usage, then just a PAYG sim in the three router for bigger downloads if needed. Seems like the only option really. I'm about 500m away from the end of the exchange which ads to the comedy show

I could take my chances with Eir fixed line with speeds from 2-7Mb but even that's pretty grim. What a time to be alive!

Modern technology at its best lol....

You could see about an external antenna for your router? What is your coverage like and what are your off peak speeds like?

Also - dont vodafone do a base 4g broadband package with a nice sized addon? I know its quite a bit more expensive but may be an alternative to the current hell that you are going through?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,290 ✭✭✭-=al=-

The signal is great, perfect 4 bars of 4g coverage and speed is fine at 2 in the morning but that's not much use!

If anything it just shows that the contention is insane and some serious throttling goes on after a big download for sure.

I currently have a nice mimo LTE antenna on the roof going into the 4g router, then run a cat 5 into the main router, all of which works perfectly except for the terrible speeds.

Thankfully I'm not usually at this current location with these dismal speeds, but it's been pretty annoying trying to use it at the minute. I thought we'd be over this by now :pac:

I think Vodafone do offer an ok package with a router. I'd probably wait for a 5g router to come about before I'd make the plunge with them

I've tried all of the networks in the past and Eir seem to have the best stable speeds and connections throughout the day but their data offerings are comical

Ah ok - that is truly shocking of three but absolutely no surprise at all. I dont hold much hope for 5g once it becomes congested. 4g was supposed to be an evolutionary step forwards but simple put it hasn't had the channel availability or management necessary to work effectively. Regulator has an awful lot to answer for in this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,290 ✭✭✭-=al=-

Yea, I agree with all of that. It's just pushing the problem further away with the same issues every time. It really shouldn't be a problem in Dublin in 2019

As predicted, just like a switch has been flicked, the speed comes back after around 23:15

    NZkuRgS.png

Seems like some sort of throttling or restriction going on for sure. The pattern is pretty evident every day. How frustrating indeedy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,904 ✭✭✭✭Dan Jaman

Mine isn't quite as badly affected, but shows a substantial drop when the villagers are on the porn or gaming sites, leaving us hicks on the long wireless connections to fight for crumbs. In the wee small hours 50 and 60 Mb/s plunging to a couple of Mb/s in the evening.

I've decided to give GoMo a try for broadband as fed up with VM upping their price every year without fail & a big difference between €60 & €9.99 per month. Using a Huawei B525, this is what I'm getting which will do me fine as the only thing I stream is radio.

    497538.jpg

If it really doesn't work out then I'll move back to VM in six months as new customer.

Found the program LTEInspectur very handy in figuring out where the 4g router box should be positioned, made quite a difference in performance with the GoMo SIM.

This looks like strict speed capping on this Three site. Never seen that before (D almost bang on 10x U).

Noticed last week or two speeds down/intermittent badly. Were i had 80-100, now its 20-80, UL remain ~40. Dont know if its related to more people using mobile broadband or Three just capping in general. Also, band1 4G gone for some time now, in my area anyway.

The Vodafone coverage map only goes up to 4G. Is there a way to check what coverage I can expect if I go with Vodafone 5G?

I'm currently getting ~12Mbit download on their 4G.
