Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Some interesting auctions here. Seems this guy bought a load of stuff when Acclaim wen't out of business. Most of the games aren't very interesting..but the emails and documents are. I wonder if there's anything cool on any of the discs? I'd love to buy one of the lots but the postage to Ireland is extremely expensive

OK, a bit random from the rest of the posts but just looking for a bit of help.
I have a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) that I was trying to get working recently. I bought a new 72 pin connector and replaced the old one with it. I keep reading online that this is the solution to none working Nes system......however mine still doesn't work.
The power comes on, red light stays on, NO FLASHING at all. hooked it up to the tv and all I get is a grey/white solid screen that also does NOT FLASH. I've taken the games apart and given them a really good clean.
The cables look fine and I reckon it must be a connection problem but everything is sparkling clean or new. Am I missing something?
Any suggestions or is my system doomed for the bin?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 520 ✭✭✭batari

I'd suggest snipping the region pin too, this may be to make it region free, but I found it helped get one non-working NES to work for me regardless. Worth trying either way. And whatever you do, DON'T BIN IT!! Someone would definitely make use of it here!

Here's our resident console genius Enternow's excellent walkthru:

I think it's time this was stickied here or in the Ninty forum, it gets asked a lot don't y'all think?:pac:

I'm not trying to be funny here, but without a working game, how can you be sure the console is properly tuned in ro your tv? One thing you might try is to leave the console on with a game in it, & set your tv on auto-tune. It's prob a dumb suggestion, but hey, it's free :)

I had a mario 2 that was exactly the same, constantly on grey screen. the game is dead. i got other games and they all work perfect.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 joekdp

Its defo tuned into the tv. used AV leads on one tv tried RF cable into a different tv. I can see Im tuned to the right spot since the grey screen appears when the NES is turned on and goes blank static when I turn it off so thats not the problem.
Have tried 3 different games, Mario, wrecking crew & donkey Kong, all with the same outcome.
Think Ill try snipping the region pin, even though I dont think it'll make a difference as all the games use to work before.
Anyone think its possible I was sold a dud 72 pin connector?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,390 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

Could be, i doubt its the region myself i had a US mario\duckhunt before i snipped it and it flashed on and off constantly.

Feckin hell man, seems like every few months you try to flog your collection!

I'd buy that NTSC slimline ps2 if I had the room for it.

It does seem that way. I'm going back over to Canada at the end of the year for a year and tbh I have too much stuff that I don't play or finished with. If I can get a few bob for it and it goes towards my funds then that will be great.

Was in Rage today - they have Parodius (cart only) for Super Nintendo plus Super Mario All-Star's (boxed), Donkey Kong Country (boxed) and another Mario game I can't think of.... gogogogo.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,390 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

dont suppose you know how much mario allstars boxed is?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,162 ✭✭✭Augmerson

15 European Euro's. Well worth it in my opinion, the box was near mint. I was surprised, I'd imagine they could have gotten atleast 20 for it.

Is the battery still holding saves or does it need to be changed? I've yet to come across an AllStars cart that still saves.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,162 ✭✭✭Augmerson

Ah well I couldn't tell you O1s1n, I was just looking at the box. My All-Star's cart still saves but it's NTSC if that makes any difference. Also I just remembered Super Mario World was there for 15 Euro as well.

Ah sorry, I read it too fast. Thought you said you bought it.

I wouldn't mind picking up Parodius. Might take a trip over tomorrow morning if I'm not too lazy.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,162 ✭✭✭Augmerson

Tomorrow is Saturday and as such you are bound to be quite busy being lazy, but I've heard good things about that game, mostly that it's a mad weird Japanese shoot 'em up.

    I love the name..

'Lets make a parody of Gradius..but what to call it?'

    'Parody of Gradius...'

    'Parody...Gradius'

    Paro...dius?

    'Bingo!'

Ico for 9.99 in that new game place on Grafton Street. Now it's the plastic box edition, but I still think that isn't a bad price for Ico. It's on the bottom shelf of the PS2 stuff, nearest to the right. At the moment, it's going for over 9 GBP on Ebay and that's a live auction, so worth it I think.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25 jambolian

Hey, unless it was already mentioned there is a new second hand games shop opened up on the top of grafton street, 3D Gaming, they have a good selection of old and new games, they go as far back as NES! :pac:

They have some cart stuff at the counter. Nothing nearly as extensive as RAGE the last time I was in. Maybe they've expanded it a bit.

I saw no NES games or consoles there yesterday. Saw a Super Nintendo for 55 or 60 euro, can't remember now, and some games (Super Swiv was there - no idea of price) that was it really.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,390 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

had a walk down, no NES games, just a yellowed overpriced snes and about 10 unboxed games.. its no RAGE!

I remember being in Gamestop a few years back and seeing Ico for something like €4.99. I had no idea what the game was at the time but the cover art looked so plain that I didn't pick it up. I looked it up online when I got home but when I went back to get it, it had been sold. Can't wait for the HD remake of it and "Shadow of the Colossus" next month.

I picked up Cool spot for the megadrive in that new game place for €8 in mint condition.

Where's this Rage place? I've seen it mentioned in a few threads now and really want to take a look. I usually rely on car-boot sales and charity shops to get my old games

Rage is on Fade Street. It's about a million times better than 3D games for older stuff.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,390 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

its on fade street, near stephens green. great stock of old games and consoles in it usually. megadrive, snes, nes, etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 437 ✭✭wobzilla1

Sounds great. I'm fairly lacking in terms of Nintendo consoles (I only have the NES). I was looking to pick up a SNES but I was wondering if it has regional lockout? I have a few Japanese Final Fantasy games and was wondering if they'd work on a PAL SNES.
To that fella looking for a dreamcast, I got one off adverts a few months back for €30 including postage up from Cork. Finding games and a memory card for it is a different story though

Region lock out and running in ****ty PAL 50hz letterbox format. You'd really need to get one modded.

Just been playing around with a different way of browsing ebay and getting some great results.

I normaly just search for the videogame/retro game category to see if any good random deals pop up. But I just thought of an interesting way of doing it.

Search for all the retro videogame items. (not in the search bar..highlight the videogame category and then once it's inside, go to the retro videogame sub category)

Set it to show 'buy it now' only and then set it to show newest listed first.

Just saw a CD 32 listed at £35. Had to do my best not to bid on it! But yeah, some crazy deals appearing. Can't see them lasting long. And if one does - it's buy it now. So bam! Instantly yours.

I've been using it that way for donkeys :pac: ;)

Depending what category I'm looking in, I also use it with
    (i) auctions-only (no B-I-N, as usually a tad overpriced here in UK) plus
(ii) "10 mile distance" (local to me) plus
(iii) "pick-up only" (no shipping, collection only)

For sorting, use either "ending soonest" or "recently listed", depending on whether you're in a want-to-get-something-now mood or in a stalking-I'll-check-this-later mood. Guaranteed to pick up bargains on a regular basis. Especially 'big ticket' items (HiFi speakers, A/V gear, etc.) or bargain bucket gaming (not so much 'retro-retro' stuff, more 'recent-retro' like xbox 1, ps 1/2, n64/gc etc. I regularly see full console packages with games and accessories ending sub-£10).

Also, ever heard of Goofbay? Pretty useful for tracking down misspelt items ('Nitendo', 'Dreemcast', 'Gamcube', etc.), another must-have tool in the retro collector's arsenal IMHO ;)

I've always just gone 'ending soonest' with the videogame category. Did this for years with ebay.ie as nobody was bidding on anything Irish and was picking up stuff for next to nothing.

Don't know why I never thought of checking BIN newly listed. I'm seeing some fantastic stuff for cheap doing that the last few days. In fact I'm REALLY having to hold back on buying stuff.

There was a site I used ages ago that dealt with misspelled auctions but it's been down a while. First I've heard of Goofbay. Cheers for that :)

They sell for a small fortune. I saw a pair of Saturn ones sell for ever more a while ago.

I wouldn't imagine the beam on them is much good, but I'd still really love to have a set.

They're actually supposed to be very very good. No lag at all. Not sure on what kind of range is on them though but I seen a guy playing them just sitting your average distance from couch to tv with no problems.

Is anyone here currently bidding on that Irish Vectrex? If you are, you should really stop. There are 4 days left on the auction and it's already at 71.50 after 6 bids. It's needlessly driving up the price.
