Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Waiting for my last mining earnings to come in from the pool in the next hour or so. Then sell (HODL zero) and wait for the dip :D

Come on dip, hurry up the feck up, I'm in the bath!

I really should buy a s/h laptop, it'd be easier than monitoring all this stuff on the phone!

I'd have loved to profit off this spike but sadly I'm not psychic. And buying on the up is too risky.

    Not a dip

Would of course have loved to have gained from this huge peak, but I'd say it will come down again. Then I'll buy.

At least my mining is getting good revenues at the moment :)

Oh it'll come down, it's done this twice before. Glad you're doing the mining and making money, great to see people contributing to ETHs health, I just trade it. And the overriding rule of cryptotrading is always buy in the dip. The number of people burned because they bought on the rise is startling. I've lost money that way myself.

    I don't think you've got this quite right. :)
Professional traders buy on a rise; they don't try to catch a falling knife -- ie, they don't buy when it is falling.
Buying on the way down is what is risky.

    Disclaimer; I'm not a trader.

Anyone got any sell targets for this rise?

Buying on the rise is fine for a HODLing strategy but too risky as a trading strategy. I should have differentiated between the two. I don't hodl so it'd be silly for me to buy on the rise.

...they don't buy when it is falling.

...unless the fundamentals haven't changed. The amount of bone-headed morons who have sold and who will sell their Apple stock based on Wall Street's analysis of Apple's quarters rather being based on Apple's own release schedules and projections is astounding.

Same when ETH dropped - anybody selling ETH under €300 (as in cashing out in a panic rather than trading out for a different speculative opportunity) was a bit of a pleb.

Feck it, selling under €800-€900 due to unwarranted FUD-panics is a pleb move.

Ok, ok, most people don't like day trading. It works for me and I'm obviously the only one who talks about it on Boards so I'm in a minority of one. I won't raise the subject again.

Of course I do, I was the only one talking about it through the recent doldrums, just as I was psyching myself up to start trading it starts to move. Not selling now anyway, if the ratio with BTC is correcting back to where it was as many were predicting on Ethtrader that could be serious $$$

I suspect an ICO is pumping ETH. Be prepared for a serious correction in the next few days

Pump and dump my ass. Like I said at the very start of this thread, Bitcoin has been the gateway crypto currency for most people. Long term fundamentals are very strong for this as it gets discovered by all the new entrants and I still maintain for a patient long-term holder (especially one who can buy on dips), there are very few investments as good in the markets today.
No selling for me, not unless I make 10x.

I'm not suggesting that anyone sell, just that ETH has a history of big corrections after large spikes. Most cryptos do. If you're a hodler, hodl through the correction, it'll come back up again soon enough.

What the heck happened to send ETH and everything else spiking and BTC on steady level / slight downward turn?

So long ETH I've been holding since June. Finally got rid of it today for a very meagre profit.
Can't even bare thinking about how much fun I could have had with that tied up cash if I hadn't buried it in ETH at its previous all time high.

Unless you're confident that you can trade yourself into higher percentage gains than ETH could possibly rise in a few years, just hold on to it.

It's one of the safest bets in the whole market. Don't throw it into speculation unless you have something you're very very confident in.

Down 3% in the last 12 hours. If it drops to 310 I’ll sell (still a decent profit)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,929 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Ive been moving bitcoin over to ETH then back as the prices are going oposite at the moment.

Eth is down and bitcoin up i buy eth with the bitcoin. When bitcoin dropped back under 7k and ETH went over 350 i bough back into bitcoin.

What kind of strategy is that? Why not sell now? At €347?

I'll happily sell my latest mining payment when I get home. I've no intention to buy ETH until it drops significantly (think to around €250)

I agree, if you're selling, sell at the highest price you can.

As for ETH dropping to €250... maybe. If it does I'll be delighted, frankly. Going to stick to LTC for the moment, but if ETH drops below €280 I'll buy.

If we look at a 3 day window in mid Oct, prices rose then slightly fell, rose again and then slipped way down (M shape part of graph with long tail). The low (middle of M) is approx an 8% drop. Then after it rises again it falls back by about 16% peak to trough.

Looking at the last day or two is showing a similar curve (albeit at higher values and more rapid pace). My logic (guesswork!) is that if it falls to 310 or so (approx 10% fall from peak), it is likely to keep falling (to about 280-290).

Explanation of above is easier to follow if you have a look at the charts on coinigy

Why not sell now? Well on the off chance it keeps gaining momentum!

They are forecasting $500 for ETH and 10k bitcoin by end of yhe year. Some have even mentioned that if Eth holds at $450 it is on track to hit $650 this year.

Question: if I trade bitcoin for etherium and then etherium for bitcoin depending the market, how about those fees involved? Would those be double of trading euro for bitcoin and bitcoin for euro?

So would I if it was another swing up to $340 before the inevitable drop back to $300 but this is clearly a wait and see situation, something has changed. Eth spent most of its life in the spotlight at a ratio of 0.075 to BTC, even after this weeks craziness it's barely back to 0.05, that's what I'm watching.

I dumped my ETH a couple of weeks ago and put it into NEO. Bah.

Where has this ETH spike come from?

Hard to tell. No real news, BTC stable... it can only be someone pumping shirtloads of cash into ETH. And they'll have a good reason, be it long or short term. It's really messing up my trading, lost €43 with an idiot trade. Very annoyed at myself. Way up on the week, but still.

Have made a 30% return with Litecoin over the last few weeks but surely there is a dip coming. Thinking of selling up soon and buying back in in the future.

Edit: Going to sell as soon as it starts to go down, buy back in if a dip comes.

The big push now is people think bitcoin has peaked but rather than taking the cadh they are moving bitcoin to altcoins
    ?

I would have thught that sentiment behind Bitcoin was positive; that the widespread opinion amongst analysts, investors, users etc is that it will rise further before it peaks.

I think it more likely that the reason for the surge in the Eth price is the market's appreciation of the recent developments in the Eth system -- Casper, PoS, the Ice Age etc.

Will this current massive surge in value bring in a new generation of miners? Surely it must look attractive? My 2 rigs were making about €12 per day combined, now it's gone up to about €20

I don't think those announcements have the impact people think. Most spike are from traders looking to make money rather than people suddenly thinking wow that tech upgrade is something i want to get behind longterm.

Everyone up on the tech has been invested and holding for a while.

Everyone that made 30-40% on the 5k to 7k bitcoin jump dont see bitcoin going to 10k in the next week or two. But they can flood ETH and jump that price by 30-40% pretty easily. They will likely find a new target once they feel ETH has topped out and keep their money rolling along.

Yup, makes more sense. Logic and reason has nothing to do with this market. For example, if I see something that's a bargain I'll jump on it and then sell once I get my predicted profits. That usually takes 12-24 hours. However this ETH spike makes me nervous and I have stayed clear of it (other than losing €43 after I FOMOd and panicked). I'm well up for the week anyway.

Anyone who thinks these surges have anything to do with innovations or technology, forget it. The market is at the whim of buy, sell and stop limit orders put in by traders. Just look at the GDAX exchange.

Motoring along, hopefully $500 becomes new support if it gets through. I thought it would crash today with the amount of money flowing into BTC tbh.

There goes $500, well done all holders, this is on the way to getting a bit life changing for me, as always with everything crypto, wish I'd put in more but who would have predicted this?
