    ^ Creepy...

.. although un-suprising with the recent surge in memorial pages on social networks for the deceased.

So far, of the six Black Mirror episodes I think the one from last week was the best and some of them have been pretty underwhelming, but I want to see more tv like it. Any suggestions for other programmes are welcome.

    Poor enough finale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭dmcg90

To me? It absolutely flew but it felt like barely ANYTHING happened, and then we zoom forward into this frankly far more interesting future which would have been a far more interesting world to see for an hour versus what we got.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭Missyelliot2

Wasn't the best as a finale. But definitely food for thought regarding the social network. Plus I do think that with the balls up the government are doing....won't be long before some(one) (thing) akin to the teletubbies will be voted in.
Remember Dustin the turkey??? Scary, but true...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭dmcg90

Out of every single episode this felt the most unbelievable (i'm including Season 1 Episode 1 in this), I think thats Black Mirror's hook. That notion that yes, this could happen very easily, it un-nerves you while watching.

    This? Just kinda laughable really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,119 ✭✭✭Volvagia

I've enjoyed the 2nd season but I didn't live up to the highs of the first season.

I agree with the other comments here about Be Right Back being an interesting idea but not executed well.

My favourite of the three was White Bear, where the twist had my mouth wide open for the entire rest of the episode. (Also the last time I was that actor was when he played Tyres in Spaced :) )

I thought the 3rd episode didn't quite hit the target. I don't find the Waldo taking over the world and turning it into a police state very believable.

Not as good as I'd hoped but still pretty good quality TV.

I called the White Bear twist in the first few minutes. Now, hands up, I did also change my mind about it before changing it back to my original thought!

After last week's events in Italy, maybe Waldo-world isn't so far-fetched!

I still sort of wish they didn't make the second series.

If I'm honest, whilst I wasn't impressed with the Waldo episode, I was willing to give it a pass-must-try-harder sort of rating. Nice idea, just poorly executed.

The coda though was hilariously awful & abrupt. It wasn't as if it couldn't have been slowly drip-fed or grown throughout the story; instead the sudden, ludicrous twist felt like a bad Twilight Zone episode. Waldo took over the world! Dun dun dunnnn!

Ranking episodes from favourite to least:

    1. The National Anthem
    2. White Bear
    3. Ten Million Merits
    4. Be Right Back
    5. The Entire History of You
    6. The Waldo Moment

...seriously. What an awful ending to a really good run. Hopefully there's good ideas for a Season 3 if he plans to continue.

    Good idea

    1. Entire History of You
    2. National Anthem
    3. Be Right Back
    4. White bear
    5. Ten Million Merits
    6. Waldo Moment

The finale was a bit disappointing. I think they really could have explored the concept a lot more, or even just implemented what they did cover a bit better.

I really liked White Bear the week before, very creepy and believable. It was a great social commentary on punishment for horrific crimes. I think it also had a lot to say about reality TV and the effects it can have. I thought the bit where they were escorting her back to the house in the car was very reminiscent of Big Brother, I was surprised to see at the end that it was produced by Endemol :)

    Oh, and
    1. White Bear
    2. Ten Million Merits
    3. The National Anthem
    4. The Entire History of You
    5. Be Right Back
    6. The Waldo Moment

How had I never heard of this before. Just watched the first episode...What in the fuk lol.

I just stumbled upon this on Nexflix and have just finished the first episode. Probably the weirdest 45 minutes of TV I've ever seen. Absolutely mental, absolutely brilliant

Off to top up wine and settle in for no.2.

Watched all 3 episodes of season 1 tonight too. Gonna watch season 2 tomorrow. Some of the actors are absolutely excellent, they give better performances in the one episode of a small British show they appear in than most actors in big American shows do in entire seasons. Nice concepts for the stories.

1st series is excellent, 2nd series is a bit more hit-and-miss.. but it's all very refreshing TV!

Looking forward to the Christmas special, and hope a third series isn't far behind!

I think it's a good solid show, I liked all of all of the episodes.

I find I enjoyed them more when I didn't focus as much on 'what the show is trying to say', and just took each episode as simply a story of what these people would do in whatever situation they're in.

Thanks to whoever mentioned Utopia, by the way. Brilliant show, can't believe I had never heard of it.

Can't wait myself, has anyone watched the film Tusk? Reminded me of this.

Crazy show, but looking forward to a new episode!

I'm looking forward to the episode, but I've become quite cautious when approaching this show; when it's good, Black Mirror is very, very good, you can almost hear the rage coming from the script, but when it's bad I've found it pretty bloody terrible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,951 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

seen stephen king put up a tweet about it the other day praising it, so looked it up and watched the first episode on netflix yesterday evening.

bat sh*t crazy , but really enjoyed it. Will watch another episode this evening after the champions league !!

Funny, I only heard of Black Mirror when it was advertised over the closing credits of Utopia.

Just watched episode three. Haven't cringed this much since Basil Fawlty was checking the walls.

One and three were great. Wasn't too keen on the second one. Although, to be fair, I was probably too close to the end of a bottle of wine to get the most out of it.

    BUMP!

Christmas Special on tonight! Channel 4 at 9 p.m.

(Bloody clashes with last episode of ' The Missing' but so be it)

Well, that was excellent. I only caught the twist about 5 minutes before it happened, but really well executed. I found the time acceleration in the cookie to be the most terrifying thing - and yet it wasn't a real person, was it? The pick up artist part was the most plausible, but very discomforting knowing that could be abused by more interconnectivity. I think it's fair to say that Charlie Brooker really hates Google Glass!

Can someone summarise what I just watched? It was the only episode of this show to confuse me.

Classic anthology stuff really. three little mini Black Mirrors, all brought together by the final reveal.

Loved all the different callbacks and similar themes to previous episodes.

That was so much (dark) fun.

It all led up to a confession.

How unbelievably fitting was the Channel 4 announcement at the end, especially considering the episode of Black Mirror on the child killer woman, ala Ian Huntley/Maxine Carr?

"Coming up we've a change to listings. The verdict came in this afternoon and Channel 4 has the inside story of how a sexual predator has been brought to justice. Manhunt: Closing in on a British Paedophile... is next."

I don't know if Charlie Brooker would have been delighted or disgusted hearing that - likely both. Incredibly creepy in the context.

I didn't know there was a second and third series.

Just watched White Bear. I thought 12 pounds was quite reasonable for the Justice Park all day parking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭jcsoulinger

It was a very good episode, crammed allot into the hour (excluding ads). I found the ending particularly harrowing 1000 years a minute spent in a kitchen [shudders]

One thing that annoyed me tho was the need for a confession I mean they had the murder weapon with his finger prints on it and motive possible GPS tracking puts him at the scene. Water tight case really no need for the confession.

That annoyed me a bit too. He made his confession, or is recounting a detailed description how and why you comitted a crime not admissible in court unless you specifically say the words 'I confess'? Silly in an otherwise clever episode.

I thought that the whole point was that the murder weapon did NOT have his finger prints on it. He was wearing his gloves when he hit yer man with the snow globe....so no finger prints. I thought that was why they needed the confession.

I didn't fully understand the second story. The woman in the little egg thing. No one forced her to do it...her involvement was entirely voluntary. So why was she so unhappy and why did she want to do in the first place? If she didn't like it, then didn't they just revert the process......

She was a clone. She had no say in the matter. Even though she thought and felt human emotions, she just existed as a slave for her master (the original). As far as she was concerned she had rights and entitlements, as far as her owners were concerned, she existed to make toast and do crap around the house.

She didn't have a choice (the 'her' inside the egg) - basically that was a very advanced piece of artificial intelligence, and was a comment on the dangers/cruelty of creating that level of AI then expecting it to live like a robot (when it's closer to slavery since the thing is sentient)... I was expecting it to somehow murder the woman it was based on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 87 ✭✭Smurphy

Thanks, I get it now :-)
What confused me was whether it was really her inside the egg....but it was her clone....which raises the whole issue of clones being self aware and enslaving them etc etc.....very interesting!

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,518 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

The copy in the egg is not a carbon copy of the person, it is a representation of her with her behaviours and tastes, it might think it is her but it's "just a bit of code" or an AI with her personality traits and simply may just be responding to its internal logic. It might have its memory but probably not of all historical decisions like electing to get a cookie, or these parts can be removed. Like any computer it is 'programmed', in this case by some spectacularly cruel methods, to do a task. Because it has a human personality the programming is akin to torture.

Similarly the guy in the kitchen isn't a real person either. The callousness of the police at the end reflects this, they want to punish him, before trial, in a passive aggressive manner. To them it's no different to shooting a bunch of people in a game to relieve stress, except that they supposedly feel pain - whatever that is, and this gratified the police.

I think there was actually a line about this as well that the "broken" ones (through too much torture) get sold to games companies to put into games, or something to that effect.

One question that wasn't really resolved. There was a loud noise at one point that Rafe Spall heard behind him but Jon Hamm apparently didn't. It was never explained what it was, or did I miss something?

I think that was just to get across that the cabin was not 100% real. The same way the clock appeared suddenly and kept on showing a different time.

This one is going to take at least one more viewing to get my head around but I feel it'll be worth it.

Apart from the "puppet as a politician" episode it has been astonishingly good TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,664 ✭✭✭Tin Foil Hat

I afraid to read the last few pages.
I presume this is a stand-alone show - so it's okay to watch this without having seen any of season 2?
