Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

People really need to stop using that word. Travellers are still a group people think it's ok to disparage, never mind the class bit.

    is Genge a traveller??

Regardless of whether he's a traveller or not, using knacker as an insult implies that you think there's something wrong with being a traveller.

Well that's quite a far out illogical stretch....

Knacker is not an exclusive term for a traveller. Calling someone who acts like a scumbag a knacker is not implying they are travellers....

Or maybe where you come from its used solely for that purpose?? Because its certainly not where I'm from.

That's the origin of it though Syd, over time it's become more known as a way of calling anyone a scumbag but it was only for travellers originally as knacker was one of the jobs they used to do, like tinker. Hence the term knackers yard.

It's pretty commonly used to describe the travelling community in a derogative way, but a lot of people have been using it broadly now.

Well then that tells me the etymology of the words is being so diluted so as not to have it associated specifically as a derogatory term for a traveller.... Which is actually a good thing.

We all know what "knacker drinking" is... and there's absolutely no inference to travellers with that phrase. Also something being "ready for the knackers yard" is a phrase which also has no inference to travellers.

So unless it's specifically used as a derogatory insult towards a traveller.... It's use to describe scumbag actions is pertinent and valid

Anyway, its obviously a very sensitive subject so I'll leave it there.

The slur has simply been extpanded to disparage poor people as well as travellers. A bunch of pissed up Leinster fans assaulting passers by in Blackrock (I've seen it happen) aren't knackers, but the equivalent in Summerhill or O Connell St are. Using words like pertinent and valid to rationalise class hatred doesn't make it scientific.

    Class hated... Leinster fans.... Blackrock...
Jeez you live a sheltered life.

Anyway I've already said that I'm out.

Lot of tries in games this season. Wonder is fact that there are no fans mean players feel they are under less pressure?
    Just a thought.

Mike Brown just after being sent off for Quinn’s for stamping on Tommy Taylor’s face. Could’ve taken his eye out, extremely reckless. His Quinn’s career over now - surely 8+ week ban. Disgraceful stuff from him, knew exactly what he was at.

Horrible stamp. That's his season over and he'll never wear the jersey again. The angle from behind the try line shows just how long his studs are as they come down on Taylor's face. Taylor is lucky to not be on his way to hospital.

Was that Austin Healey trying to justify Brown's actions by saying he wasn't looking at the player? What a twat.

Brown looks down at his as he's getting up. He has his arm on his chest. He surely knows exactly where his head is?

As scummy as a thing you can do on a pitch these days

Yeah Healy & Dallaglio didn’t say much that was too critical. Brown giving the hand up to Taylor as he was going off too I found a bit too much.

As an aside, I’m looking forward to seeing Marcus Smith playing for England to see how he gets on. Calling him to be a Lion was way OTT but he looks made for international rugby. Great player for someone so young.

This game is a great watch.

Clip straight from BT. That's as bad as you'll see on a rugby pitch. Could have done untold damage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,721 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

"To be fair he's not looking at him", after he looks down at his head and then stamps less than a second later.

I'm amazed Austin Healy still has a job, but it's clear BT love the contrarian angle he always tries to play.

Bristol leading Gloucester 13-7 half time
Gloucester were down to 13 at stages and have had someone sent off.
Bristol had 6 trys ruled out by tmo/knock ons on or over try line. should be well out of sight.

    Gloucester are so so bad....

Really enjoyable game between Sale Saffies and Bristol Mercenaries last night (at least I enjoyed it!).

Incredibly physical encounter and the 0 - 0 half time score didn't tell the full story of a fascinating 40 minutes when Sale were under the cosh (making 106 tackles according to The Times!) but held out.

Sale won it in the end 22 - 12 and Radradra was a lucky guy to have avoided a red card, although the 12 points conceded by Bears while he was off the pitch clinched the win for Sharks.

In the other game, Billy 36's late late penalty scraped a 30 - 28 win for Gloucester against LI. Lion Chris Harris went off with a hand injury that may threaten his prospects of touring.

Defenceless error ridden attacking rugby is far better then one out runners over and over again

Only got to watch the Quins' and Saints' games last night - both crackers with lots of tries, some dreadful misses (especially Ben Spencer's), but some very debatable TMO calls for forward passes. Bath and Wasps should both be kicking themselves. And Mike Browne's replacement, Tyrone Green, looked a fine prospect.

Probably the most significant event was Dan Biggar's clean out on Jacob Umaga's head which, mysteriously, wasn't noticed by the officials or the TMO. He could yet be cited for it.

Exeter have put 70 on Newcastle. Not a popular team currently but they've been brilliant. Man of the moment Henry Slade was sensational. Haven't seen an Irish centre have as rounded a performance in a long time regardless of the opposition.

Helpful of Dean Richards to field a very understrength XV on the basis that it's a very long drive from Newcastle on Tyne to Sandy Park on a bank holiday weekend!

No team from a real league like the Premiership would ever deliberately put out an understrength team, never happens.

True in the days when there was relegation, but not this season. Richards admitted that his focus was on their home game against Worcester next weekend, also pointing out the short turn around and long trip home.

Ya poor form but the right decision was reached and afoa came back on. It did give the Bristol lads time to regroup though

Once Lam said Afoa was injured, the ref should have stuck with that. Lam only changed his mind when told to take another player off.
