Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Weirdly enough I thought the same... Not sure why they felt a need for that

It Didn't bother me at all but left me wondering why bother at all because the film didn't need it

Its the 4th/5th remake of the same story not really that original.

I loved it as well and I wouldn’t be a fan of either lead and I thought Bradley did a good job as a first time director.

    I worded that absolutely awful;!

I tried to basically say the director did a great job on the whole movie. The way he or she developed / showed the characters interlink and developed within their personalities while bringing me/ viewers on a emotional ride

    haha

Original was the worst word I could have chosen

    Either way brill movie

Bearing in mind I'm comparing that to hundreds of awful awful movies

    A Star Is Born – 8/10

A familiar story that has been cleverly reworked for modern times, elevated by two top level performances. Bradley Cooper seems to be channelling Jeff Bridges Oscar winning performance in Crazy Heart, playing a grizzled alcoholic musician who becomes a liability to those around him. The problem here for me is that Bridges played a near identical role in a much more convincing manner, so I was constantly reminded that a similar/better performance exists in recent memory.

Lady Ga Ga shows that she is a decent actor with a phenomenal singing talent, and she looks very suited to the big screen. I feel like she may have collaborated on the script as there seems to be a certain amount of introspection going on; referencing her large nose, her starting off in a drag bar, the nude shot etc... I do think she should’ve used her real name for the role though, ‘Lady Ga Ga’ just seems like an odd, almost juvenile credit.

The chemistry between her and Cooper is slightly under baked. It takes a while to buy into them as a couple and the ups and downs of their relationship could’ve been pushed a lot further. The script isn’t the strongest so it’s the music, sound, lighting and direction that give the film its flair. A thoroughly enjoyable crowd pleaser.

Not my kinda movie at all .

Loved it 100% , don't care if it's a remake, some of the songs are stunning, shallow is decent, "I'll never love again" deserves the Oscar, the live music was great, Cooper is very talented, gagas version of la vi en rose gives me shivers now, soundtrack on constantly since, only skip the pop rubbish.

    What a film.

Just seen this today. I am so glad I did as I loved it. I nearly did not go see it as I heard its just another remake but it was so worth it. An excellent and very emotional film. The songs were amazing and I thought the relationship between her and Jackson was very well done. I was in tears at the end. Lady GA GA is amazing in it and so is Bradley Cooper. I do agree with what a poster above said that maybe Lady GA GA should have used her real name in the credits she could have had Lady Ga Ga beside it in brackets.

10 out of 10 from me for it.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Just watched it with the better half. Wouldn’t be a fan of hers at all but **** me she has some voice.

Really enjoyed it. Didn’t know it was a remake.

So I just finished watching the 1976 film and while it was not bad for its time and it certainly looks of its time I have to say I enjoyed the 2018 version more. The 2018 version engages you more in the film but its also sadder. I had never even heard of them before this year.

    Live long and Prosper

Surprised that it got almost universal acclaim from critics. I thought it started well, then nosedived second half. The film became a slog due to the very poor script. Found I was just watching stuff happen on the screen, rather than being engaged by dialogue - which is what a romance needs imo if it wants that end emotional pay off.

don't they do this so the film is guaranteed a more mature rating? (R in USA).

I absolutely hated this. Such a stupid story about two annoying people. "If you're with someone talented and you're holding them back, don't breakup with them, just kill yourself", is not a great narrative to me.

Before he appeared, I did not know Sam Elliott was in this film, but thought Bradley Cooper sounded like him...then Sam Elliott actually shows up as his brother and Cooper's imitation voice just became even more of a distraction.

Think you're misreading it if you think that is the message/narrative of the film.

My first time posting in the "Films" forum!

So, I've just finished watching this movie, which I recorded from RTE1 a few days ago.

My major issue with it is the sound quality...which seems odd for an Oscar winning movie, which is based around music.

Firstly, I found that much of the dialogue is slurred or spoken with a drawl (is this some regional American accent?), to the extent that I couldn't follow what was actually being said. I understand that the main character (Jackson) was meant to be drunk or high much of the way through, but I noticed this with most of the other characters also.

Secondly, almost throughout, the vocals both spoken and sung, were out of sync with the characters lips which was very distracting, and contributed to my difficulty following the dialogue.

I found myself with the remote in my hand, turning up the volume to catch the dialogue, then frantically turning it back down when they started singing. Also, trying to find any subtitles.

Now, I did follow the main storyline, as it's a fairly simple one, but missed much of the specifics.

Wondering, was this an issue when it was released in the cinema? Or, could there have been a problem with the copy used by RTE?

I also watched this on RTE and had seen it in the Cinema too and will say it was much easier to hear in the cinema and sound was also much better too. I did not notice the lips been lit of sync do so maybe that was just yours mone certainly did not have not problem.
I think the main problem do is that most films these days are made for the cinema and it never translates well onto TV unless you have a great TV and sound set up.

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. Strange - the dialogue being out of sync was very noticeable when I watched it. Wondering if this is an issue with my UPC/Virgin media box. Must watch out for it elsewhere.....

Overall, I thought it was a fairly good film. Very sad at the end. I'd have got more out of it if I could follow it better! For example, I didn't realise that one of the secondary characters was his brother (?), until reading this thread.
