FYI, If you have this through MS Store (not steam) you can play now by setting your PC region to Kiribati. Though there is a 90GB install, and it's not the quickest.

My downloads are flying (pardon the pun). Should be fully downloaded in 20 mins total

I wonder will Aerosoft and PMDG launch products tomorrow or wait a week....

Can people post setups of their flying rigs, I was into Flight Sims before I had the kids, and now they have grown up I am considering buying a rig and getting back into simming via the FS 2020 medium! Seems to me the basics are a joystick, separate Throttles and some rudder pedals!

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,950 ✭✭✭Doge

Im using the throttle from my T.Flight Hotas X as the joystick is spring based and feels rather ****e.

And using the ancient Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 which is one of the best joysticks ever made.

Im not sure if the force feedback will be supported in Flight Simulator 2020 though.

I only flute around in WW2 fighter sims in VR

    Joytsick is a KBsim Gladiator

    Throttle is an old X52
    x52_standard__55672.1470883321.1280.1280.jpg?c=2

I could augment that with an even older X45 for a second throttle

Also have a Saitek flight yoke, throttle quadrant and rudder pedals, which is probably more appropriate for this kind of sim but I dont have them hooked up

This is the sort of thing I was thinking of, whats the rough cost of getting those 3 bits of kit?

The yoke and throttle were only £100 recently on Amazon before they went out of stock.

If you have a higher budget the Honeycomb Alpha Yoke is meant to be a beast that holds its own up against yokes that cost over a grand.
It's the only yoke that can turn a full 90 degrees on the market as far as I know too.

Theres a great in depth compaison of 4 flight yokes including the Logitech and Honeycomb Alpha here by Austin Myers the creator of XPlane.

Current HOTAS: PXN 2119, a chinese piece of crap with bad deadzones
    80DgX1j.png
Old HOTAS: Thrustmaster Tflight HOTAS X. Nothing wrong with it for general simming, but I replaced it because it just didn't have enough buttons for the variety of joystick games that I play, mostly Elite Dangerous

Bonus item: A panel I tried to make myself for the Aerosoft A320 back in 2016. Turned out that FSX and Simconnect were such a horrible mess for custom controls and bindings that I never really used this that much, it was buggy, laggy, and you have to pay for software to make the hardware work. Then I got X-Plane 11 when it came out and never used this one again because I never paid for an A320 for X-Plane.

Tis something else, first thing I did was fly off from Galway to find my home house! It's surprisingly accurate in spots! Struggles a bit with the new motorway though!

Can't get over how good it looks!

Bit miffed to find Dublin's ground data out of date. Sierra is still Bravo, and it sent me to a stand 156 that was on pier 3 somewhere. I'll give it a proper go tonight though.

I'm a bit surprised with loading times, its taking 5 minutes so far to load the sim. Also got a band width warning. GPU appears to be at 100% also.

New computer with 3.6ghz i7, 1TB SSD, 32gb RAM, and NVIDA RTX 2070 Super. my wifi is running at 120mbs download 90mbs upload.

    Still loading....

  • Registered Users Posts: 770 ✭✭✭Board Walker

Restarted the sim and it loaded much quicker. My Saitek ST290 does not appear to be working and comes up with a question mark... I wonder is there some class of a firmware upgrade... as i got it for FS 2004 i think it was

Finally installed the game. It's a big one!

Must be 15 years since I last played a flight sim, 2002 entry iirc. Very excited. But need a yoke..

    Much appreciated!

Where’s the best place to buy HOTAS?

Finding stock seems surprisingly difficult. Even amazon is really limited.

Just looking for stick and throttle.

Well, my first flight attempt involved my aircraft breaking up barely 100m out of Dublin International. Not an ideal start.

It is very demanding hardware wise though. I'm only getting 30fps on an i9 7900x and 2x GTX 1080s. I knew it would need a lot of power, but I though my machine would be up for it still.

Can’t recommend anything as I’m completely out of the loop on sticks (have a saitek x52 pro for years) but make sure you get one with a twist function for rudder inputs

    SLI causing a performance hit?

    SLI causing a performance hit?

It shouldn't, unless something is seriously bugged. Worst case it would normally just use one card. It'll need something prodding and poking when I get time later today. I can't even check the official MS forum bug thread, as they're overwhelmed.

Re the sticks, I was going to suggest a specialist flight simulation company in the UK, RC simulations, but I have just been devastated to discover that the owner of the company, Bob Sidwick, died over 12 months ago, and I don't know if they are still operating or not.

I've not been closely involved with Flight Sim systems for the last 15 years, before that, some of the specialised systems I was involved with were very sharp end devices used for research, and I got a number of items over the years from Bob, and my demo rig went to Birmingham to his Flight Sim show on a number of years. I have happy memories of regularly visiting Bob, Carol, the family and dogs in the portacabins that they operated out of for many years beside the runway at Bristol Airport, and there was always something new and interesting to look at and talk about, both in simulation and light aircraft flying, which Bob was also active in.

Bob organised and sponsored a lot of Flight Simulation events in the UK, and he was one of the foremost suppliers of many different flight simulation systems, from basic computers up to very complex moving replicas of flight deck units for professional training, and he would always be able to provide good information and advice to anyone who called. He will be missed by the flight simulation community.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

SLI has never really delivered on what it tried to, support for it has further waned over the years. Your CPU is not up to it, your GPU's are not. Ideally if money were no object you'd upgrade to one of the latest AMD Zen CPU's and either Big Navi or Nvidia 3XXX series which are both due to launch in Nov. A 2080 Super or Ti would also probably do the job.

Money is no object, and I'll be putting in two 30XXs in September or so.

CPU wise, it should be okay. A current gen 10900X is only 10% better than a 7900X, so I don't believe it's the issue. The GPUs seem a far more likely culprit.

:confused:I must have missed something. All the buttons need to be configured manually and also Axis.

Still nothing from PMDG or aerosoft

For older controllers you need to dial in the settings manually.

Its the same for my Sidewinder Force Feedback 2, i actually cant seem to figure out how to map controls to it.
