I wasn't able to link it in here but take a look at the video of Patrick Willis mic'd up for packers game on the official site, good watch. He's not as angry as I thought he'd be!

Often wonder how fast Kaepernick really is or what his splits are? He has such a unique running stride and seems so hard to catch at times.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 27,267 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

His 40 times are pretty decent, though with his height and long legs and running style I get the feeling that it takes him a few seconds to get up to full speed. However, once he gets up to full speed you're pretty ****ed.

very quiet in here this week, what with all the imaginary girlfriends and debates about whether regular season means anything or not but there is a HUGE game on this Sunday.

The 49ers are 4 point favorites on the road in Atlanta. It's a tough game for sure but I think the 49ers are well equipped to go on the road and get a win. We have a good run game, our offense has been playing pretty well and on defense we have been giving up some yards but for the most part we have been doing well.

On Sunday we will need to shutdown Rodgers and Turner, if we can do that then the Falcons will become one dimensional and I think we will be able to deal with their passing attack.

Last week I think the fact that they got so much going on the ground meant the Seahawks were always going to struggle.

On the other side of the ball I'm confident that we can put up enough points. Basically Wilson shredded that defense through the air and I think we can do the same.

We'll need a big game from Lamichael James and Frank Gore, which should open things up for Kap, though I don't think we'll see as much option as last week.

    Cant wait.

Speaking of Frank Gore and how important he is here is a great article in Sports Illustrated, it really shows how far he's come and how important he still is to SF.

One of the most important plays last week was after Colin had thrown a pick 6 and we had 3rd and 10 or something and Colin was scrambling and found Gore for a huge gain to get the offfense kick-started, without that we'd be giving the Packers the ball again in good field position already 7 points up. Anyway here it is

Funnily enough Adrian, I see it the other way. I think Atlanta are petrified of Kaepernick and their focus on him could open up things in a big way for Gore. A simplistic view admittedly.
Either way, I'm extremely confident, play to our strengths and we will win relatively comfortably. An early score to quiten the dome would be helpful.
Delighted its the first game on Sunday.

Will be a very interesting game especially how Atlanta cope with CK.

With the read option strategy expect CK to try to scramble a lot, but ,here's the thing ,one hard shot from a lucky LB could put him out of the game.

Very risky business,so I would expect a strong diet of Gore and Crabtree.

    Should be a good one

Good Luck to 49ers tonight. If the Pats get past the Ravens I hope we have the 49ers as our opponent in the Bowl.

Thanks, atlanta played great, between akers missing his kick and the crabtree fumble we made things difficult but obviously delighted with the win.. Going to relax and enjoy the afc game now.

Delighted, adrenaline still flowing out of me. I was a nervous wreck. I thought at times it wasn't going to be our night, the missed field goal (what a worry Akers is for the superbowl), the rip on Crabtree on their goal line etc. But we saw it through and got the job done. It seemed to take an age for us to get going but both offence and defence improved as the game went on. A couple of great shut outs in the fourth quarter. Going to stop now and try and catch my breath!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

I thought the 3 and out we forced after the crabtree fumble was the winning of the game. atlanta put a drive together there and they probably win the game...

    No Adrian, it's not .

I was responding to a post about concerning Crabtree being involved in an 'incident' before a big game, and the relevance is that this kind of thing has been going on for yonks, ergo Fryar incident, back in the eighties.

Does that simple it up for you?

Very excited I'm going to be in San Francisco for the Superbowl. Anyone got any recommendations on where to watch it? Preferably not too busy as herself wouldn't be into standing watching it for 4 hours although I'd say the whole city is going to be crazy (In a good way ;))

Have to confess, I stopped watching last night I was so angry after our poor start. But what a comeback. Delighted to be playing the Ravens, better to be facing them than Brady and the Pats. My only concern is the Ravens have luck running with them though. They probably should have finished 8-8 after a couple of lucky regular season victories. Lost their last 4 games and now everything is going for them. Sometimes luck and destiny can't be beaten, the Giants had it last year. Let's just hope the Ravens runs out against us in the SB.

Watched the game in a Casino Sports bar in South Lake Tahoe while the rest of the lads were skiing. Place was jammed to the gills with everyone supporting the 49ers. Got there early and got a seat at the bar. Some game honestly thought they had lost it when Robinson fumbled on the 1 (think it was him?). The place when mental when the Falcons had to go for it on 4th down and was incomplete :)

So we'll be trying to find the best place to watch the Superbowl over here, I'm sure we'll have a choice of parties :)

Sounds like great fun alright, I'll have to settle for some pub in Dublin :(.

It was Crabtree who fumbled by the way.

Great article over on ESPN.com about Bill Walsh, and his legacy and a coaching manual he spent years writing, which it is claimed is a kind of coaching bible across the league.

It's a long read but it's well worth it if you have a few mins to spare, particularly if you are a niners fan....

What would you think of Revis to the 49ers?

I think if we could include Alex Smith in the deal plus maybe a mid round draft pick it would be a great bit of business, but a bit of work would need to be done on the cap to make it happen.

Revis at SF would make for an insanely good defense, just hope he doesnt wind up in Seattle

Given the week that's in it I thought I'd indulge in a little 49ers nostalgia. This is one of my earliest American Football memories and also probably one of Joe Montana's finest moments.

In order to calm his team-mates before the drive began, down 3 points and a little over 2 mins remaining, he pointed out a celeb in the crowd:

"There, in the stands, standing near the exit ramp," Montana said to tackle Harris Barton. "Isn't that John Candy?" And then he led the 49ers 92 yards, throwing for the winning touchdown with 34 seconds left.

In non-Superbowl related news, Alex Smith is likely to ask to be released(rather than traded) so he can have a much bigger say in where he ends up.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000131646/article/alex-smith-to-ask-san-francisco-49ers-for-his-release

What do you think of this request? Should SF just release him as a gesture of goodwill given how well he has handled the whole situation?

Personally I think we should be looking to trade him, starting caliber QB's are few and far between and if we can get a high draft pick or another player for him then I think that's what we should do,

Really enjoyed watching that again, long time since I saw it. Montana, Rice, Craig, say no more!! They're the reasons I'm a 9er, in fact they're the reasons I watch NFL today!
As for Smith, no room in this game for sentimentality or doing the right thing by him, sorry. Trade him to the very best advantage of the 49ers.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

I think the best we'll get is a 4th or maybe a 3rd round pick, but as you say whatever we can get we should take.

Was reading elsewhere that the Jets can't afford to get rid of Sanchez, and are about 20 million over salary cap at the moment. How much would they save by trading Revis? Presume Smith's salary is massive?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

Smiths Salary isn't huge, owed $6.75 this year I think. SF would also need to clear some cap room in order to get Revis, not sure how this would be achieved, maybe cutting Rogers and/or Goodwin.

Have a read here if you're interested:

According to that article: "Smith's cap hit will be $9.75 million in 2013 and the Jets are already over the cap limit which would create their own problem with contracts." I think they would have to pay something like 17 million to cut Sanchez, not sure how much it costs to keep him on the bench.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

Well they have to pay that money to Sanchez whether they keep him or not. Trade is probably not going to happen anyway. would have been a nice addition though.

Either way I can't see Smith a 49er next year, a good move for him would be to the Jags and then prove how good a QB he really is(And any 49er fan who has his jersey can wear it in London! ). 49ers need a kicker badly, and I think the defensive line needs more back up, when Justin Smith was injured it really showed in the performance. And is A.J Jenkins a lost cause I hope they give him another chance, disaster of a first season but I still think he has potential.

Yeah, I'm sure they'll keep him around for another year but really with Williams and Manningham getting injured he should have stepped up by now.

If he has a strong training camp he could move up the depth chart but it doesn't look good that both Ted Ginn and Chad Hall appear to be getting more snaps than he is.

I was reading a mock draft from immediately before the 2005 draft over on walterfootball.com. This is what they had to say on the 49ers decision at 1st overall
For months, this mock draft has disregarded the possibility of San Francisco drafting a quarterback, based on the fact that the 49ers are very stingy with their money. Another reason was San Francisco wanted Matt Leinart, who decided to stay in school.

Things have changed. Talks between the 49ers and Aaron Rodgers' agent have been going smoothly, while head coach Mike Nolan has his eyes set on drafting Alex Smith. If San Francisco can agree to terms with Smith prior to this weekend's draft, they will select the quarterback out of Utah. However, Smith wants more money than Eli Manning was paid last year, while the 49ers organization is stingier with cash than George Costanza. A deal will probably not be completed, meaning Nolan will have to settle with Rodgers, who is willing to take less money to stay in the Bay Area.

Saturday Update: Sources have reported that the 49ers will indeed draft Alex Smith, but they will try to trade him to the team that drafts Aaron Rodgers for the California quarterback and a few draft picks. Tampa Bay wants Smith, so they may draft Rodgers and orchestrate a trade with San Francisco.

Wow. Quite the deliberations that were going on. It would have been something to pull off to draft Smith, then trade him for Rodgers Plus some picks. hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

For the record Walterfootball had Rodgers going to Tampa Bay at number 5
It is well known that starting receiver Michael Clayton is lobbying for Mike Williams. Gruden struck gold by drafting Clayton in 2004 but Tampa Bay has absolutely nothing around him at the receiver position, so why not draft Williams to create arguably the best, young receiving duo in the NFL? However, the Buccaneers really want Alex Smith, meaning they could draft Aaron Rodgers (best quarterback in this draft) to deal him to the 49ers with some draft picks in exchange for Smith.

+1 and Smith has been way to bruised this season to even contemplate staying imo. Was skeptical myself at the start, but the Kaepernick decision has been well vindicated by now.
