Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Grab a Windows 7 or 8 key and download Windows 10 ISO, free upgrade is still availible...most older c's have the key printed on the bottom

Yes but only if you haven't already upgraded that laptop. I'd be surprised many haven't already done so given the daily notifications back in 2015.

    Nobody knows for sure .

There is only one review of the laptop out there by a Romanian guy
    https://next.lab501.ro/notebook/amd-ryzen-4000-mobile-part-ii-lenovo-ideapad-5-amd-ryzen-5-4500u-amd-ryzen-7-4700u
The model he tested has dual channel Ram .

It seems there are single-channel and dual-channel versions available though .

I purchased the IdeaPad 5 14" a few days ago (despite being only 1.6" less diagonal, the footprint is significantly smaller so it'll be a lot more convenient for throwing in a backpack)

Processor - Intel Core i5-1035G1 Processor (1.00GHz, up to 3.60GHz with Turbo Boost, 4 Cores, 6MB Cache)
    Operating System - Free-DOS
    Operating System Language - Free-DOS
    Memory - 16GB DDR4 3200MHz Onboard
    Hard Drive - 512GB Solid State Drive, M.2 2280, PCIe-NVMe, TLC
    Display - 14.0" FHD (1920x1080), IPS, Anti-glare, 2.4mm Thickness, 300nits, Narrow bezel
    Graphic Card - NVIDIA GeForce MX350 GDDR5 2GB 64bits
    Color - Graphite Grey
Keyboard - Keyboard Backlit Iron Grey English (UK)
Camera - 720p HD Camera with Array Microphone
    Surface Treatment - Anodizing
    Palmrest - Metal
    Fingerprint Reader - Fingerprint Reader
    Battery - 3 Cell Li-Polymer Internal Battery, 57Wh
Power Cord - 95W AC Adapter (3pin)-UK (USB Type C)
    Wireless - Wi-Fi 6 2x2 AX, Bluetooth Version 5.0 or above
    Language Pack - Publication-English
    Warranty - 1 Year Courier or Carry-in

MX350 should be about 60-70% better GPU perf than the best Ryzen 4*** IGPU, although the battery life will be a bit less. sRGB screen, a samsung SSD drive (the m2.2280 is equivalent to a 970 pro apparently) and an all metal construction are nice too.

Ended up being €589.17 & the €3.80 parcel motel charge.

    Nice.

Any direct link to this on Lenovo. I’m looking for a set-up for encoding video and this set-up looks like a contender.

Any direct link to this on Lenovo. I’m looking for a set-up for encoding video and this set-up looks like a contender.

the amd 4000 cpus would be much better for video encoding than this intel with the mx350- that is (contrary to what people think) primarily a cpu-bound task.

the 8-core 4800u, 4700u or even the 6-core with SMT 4600u would be ideal and kill this 4-core low base clock intel. the amd cpus have more cores and can sustain higher clock speeds in real-world usage.

make sure that you pick the best screen option - as the other ones all have very poor colour accuracy.

Even without a dedicated graphics card? I might be doing some very light editing (nothing heavy regarding effects, transitions etc)

    yes as I said it's a cpu-bound task.

    https://fixthephoto.com/best-cpu-for-video-editing.html
Most of the functions of the video editing software are handled by the CPU, which interacts with the software interface and the operating system, so it is worth investment. Without a powerful processor, any system lags behind.

A multi-core processor is the basis of video editing PC build, the number and speed of cores determine the speed of video post-production. A multithreaded processor with enough cores and high clock speed is ideal for video editing. I have selected 8 best processors for video editing in different price categories.

the igpu in the 4000 series are decent enough in their own right and will handle any tasks relating to the graphics side ok

the cpu is overwhelmingly the most important factor for video editing work (and at least 16gb ram)

I’ll max out Spec on the Lenovo and that should keep me going for a couple of years.

Thanks Glasso and I really appreciate the advice and information.

I would go for the 4800u if you can stretch the extra if video work is a priority for you.

don't forget the best screen option for colour accuracy. (last one on the list)

Used sapphade's link and got the following for €465.
    ****ing bargain.

Was gonna pay the extra 3- quid for the 4600u but I really don't needit, I don't even need the 4500u, the 4300u would be more than enough for me really as I only use a laptop for watching movies while travelling and some very undemanding games as I have a well specced Desktop at home.

    Now we wait.
    Processor - AMD Ryzen 5 4500U Processor (2.30GHz, Max Boost up to 4.00GHz, 6 Cores, 8MB Cache)

How come the multi-touch screen is cheaper than the other one?

    because the other one has

    - much better colour accuracy / sRGB coverage

    - metal lid (I believe)

I don't think that the touch is fine stylus compatible and in any case touch-screen on a larger laptop is of pretty limited use as the laptop is too heavy to use as a tablet.

All, any reason you are using the UK site over IE site? I have compared my specs on both and see minimal difference with exchange rate about 1.14.

Default specs for 4500 except removed windows, 16gb, backlit keyboard, metal palmrest, upgraded power cord, updated wireless.

    I'm seeing £515 v €585 before any discount codes.

For discount codes, is it just the 10% newsletter sign-up one to use or are you using anything else? I make my specs above to cost e527 from Irish store.

you can get both the newsletter 10% discount and another 10% student or NHS discount (if you can get it to work) on the UK site

see hotukdeals thread for more / current details

But you get 10% off and then you add the email 10% off on the Irish site.

or you did yesterday at least.

Had ordered through UK site before seeing your post. Cancelled and ordered on Irish instead. Saved me a Parcel Wizard fee, but more importantly, much more straight forward customer service I'd imagine for any issues.
Also, seems to be dependant on what model you start with as to whether you are given an option of metal palmrest or not. Got it this time around anyway. Cheers to you and the OP.
Went with mid range Ryzen 5 4500U, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, best screen and all the fiver specials! 95W USB C charging is a bargain, and WiFi upgrade essential for using 2.4 I think?
All in, savage value at €498.

Anything similar going bargain wise that's:
    • i5 or i7 processor
    • 16Gb Ram
    • 15" screen
    • Trustworthy brand
    • Pretty lightweight/nothing bulky
    • Not an Apple laptop

It's likely being mentioned by people who don't know anything about processors. i5 and i7 are just particular processors by a particular company and have many generations that would not be considered great today. They are in no way special or superior compared to comparable AMD processors.

Haven't got it yet, took a bit of a chance.
According to an earlier post by Francobegbie, it was acknowledged as cancelled within 3 days having cancelled the day after ordering. I'm in a similar boat, but ordered Wednesday night, cancelled Thursday, but did it by phone and recorded the agent telling me I'm free to order on Irish site. Cheeky, considering I had ordered from Irish site just beforehand!

On the HotUKDeals chat someone mentioned the colour gamut specs. Can't find them now, but I think it was something like 46%/48% for all the 3.2mm, and high 90's%, maybe 100%, for the 2.6mm.
Don't go by me though, I'm going by someone else's recommendation.

Do you mean can't use the Type C for anything other than charging while charging?
Can plug it out if I need that connection, and 2 x USB 3.1 should do for almost anything I need I'd say. Flexibility of only needing a Type C for power suits me if that works out how I hope it does, and fast charge suits.

Unidays is a discounts website for students. If you know any third level students they might be able to sort you out with one.

Also, the metal palmrest option appears to be gone. Had one in my cart overnight but its 30 dearer than one without now.

My sister's code worked on the UK Lenovo education store and not the Irish one for some reason even though she is based in Ireland. Order from the UK education store and do Parcel Motel or Parcel Wizzard. Pay with Curve or Revolut. That's what I did anyway.

Agreed. But I'd go one further.

The current generation of AMD processors are more powerful per clock and per watt, run cooler, and have more cores and threads at any price point than their intel equivalents.

They are superior chips in pretty much every way.

Just tried that, it was 60 euro more expensive than here plus parcel motel and the code still didn't work. They must've plugged the double discount.

For those wondering on codes, which site, etc, the link to the Irish rewards store on page 2 I found best to use. The rewards store auto gives 10% off and then when you spec your machine and put it in your basket apply the emag sign up 10% discount code. No need to worry about unidays, UK site or PM that way. I was confused with this myself yesterday and other posters helped me out.
