Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

To those of you advocating that we get back to normal, do you think what my sister saw is ok?

The sky was falling when beaches were packed.

The sky was falling when the May/June bank holidays had parks and beaches packed.

The sky was falling when there were queues for Beschoffs.

The sky was falling after every anti-mask demo.

The sky was falling after Dame Lane.

The sky was falling after Dundrum street drinking.

Somehow the sky wasn’t falling for BLM.

Eventually the Chicken Littles will realise the sky is not falling.

there was plenty of condemnation for the timing of the blm protests so you are of course incorrect.
restrictions were imposed after the other events also so you are doubly incorrect.
the blm protests aren't any sort of trump card anyway like some seem to think and timing asside which was bad timing, their cause is 100% legitimate.

@susieblue, you went off on a complete rant at me, using words like "terrified of the virus" and wanting lockdowns to continue for my benefit, and basically accusing me of only acting in my own best interests, and frankly, I don't appreciate it.

That is NOT what I am about, has never been what I am about, and is why I stopped bothering with threads like this.

    Finally,

The reasons why we did not have a higher infection and death rate and were not overwhelmed, is because of the restrictions that were put in place.

Not because by some miracle, Irish people were more resistant to Covid.

Having the youngest demographics in Europe is not some miracle and is a natural barrier to a virus that kills old people.

Look my original post was to a poster who said that no cancer diagnosis was ever delayed . It was and that was all i said no more no less

Cancer screening of healthy is what I am talking about also .
People are afraid to attend for screening even when incidence if Covid is low ,and repeating something we all know , especially those in health service .
Yes all delayed , along with so much else , but while somebody symptomatic was deemed essential to be treated or those like the poster with a previous diagnosis, screening of healthy individuals was not top of the list when the first wave and lockdown was on .
But those services have resumed and are continuing now .
The impact of those lost to screening this year will take some time to be known.
Some will have very little effect .
A few months lost in cancers that grow very slowly will have a negligible result .
It is those that are unaware of a larger tumour and afraid/ unable to attend their GP or A&E department that will be impacted the most .
These would have been treated all through the pandemic but would have not come forward .
What people need to know is that every year there are patients that are diagnosed with large tumours that they have somehow managed to ignore or not be aware of , and while there might be more this year ,it hopefully will not be the large number that some seem to expect .

As I remember our glorious leaders had nothing negative to say about it, in fact there was praise and sound bites supporting it from all of them. Not one had the neck to call it for what it was. It’s easier to pick on the people having a few pints than step on the landmine that was. As I said hypocrisy and very hard to take any subsequent tutting seriously.

they supported what the blm movement are campaigning for and rightly so, not the march going ahead.
they condemned the timing of the march due to the current situation, the march itself in normal times would be 100% justified.

Why are you resurrecting a post discussed at length(ad nauseum) yesterday ?

Have you nothing else to say to a poster who has clear and obvious reasons to be fearful of crowds or members of their family getting infected ?

The fact that you and others keep coming back to this after he has explained again and again shows lack of some humanity not just sensitivity in your approach to a discussion.

It is a bit cruel, imo.

the virus doesn't just kill old people unfortunately, old people and people with underlying conditions are just at a lot more risk and more likely to die from it.

which is of course quite different.

For the UK maybe. All the rhetoric from the NPHET and the media here doesn't really fill me with confidence. I expect us to be behind many of our European counterparts in rolling out the vaccine, just look at Tony's lukewarm reaction for example. I think they are happy to keep going with the rolling lockdowns as long as possible (as it doesn't affect them financially).

To be fair to Tony he knows he's dealing with a nation of alcos. Him and his team see the stats on Ireland's drinking habits and know they have to thread carefully with optimism

If he was all jovial at a Presser and said "we're in the end game now" there'd literally be street parties in some parts of Ireland

I wouldn't pay too much heed to Holohan considering his advice on nursing homes and facemasks.
Rolling lockdowns affect the supporters of political parties. The politicians will want society opened up as quick as possible to secure their seats in the next GE.

My Mum says the same she's going to visit people. One on one, mainly her other widow friends & keep distance from Friday. She has her 2 armchairs well apart & some bring their own cups. Considers that safer than 6 of them all meet in the pub for lunch. Inclined to agree with her.

Says one of the biggest pot stirrers since April

As for Ireland not being a nation of alcos:

Show me any other country with a Boards equivalent where the Covid forum has had not one, but two threads full of grown men screaming for the pubs to open during a pandemic

See the "open the pubs!" comments every day on Reddit Ireland when the case numbers are announced

Apart from maybe Britain, I can't think of anywhere else where alcohol is discussed during a once in a century virus like it's a manna from heaven

Ireland is a nation of pub and party addicts and Tony has - rightly - treated us a such

So what’s the correlation? Pubs are closed because health system is rubbish therefore we can’t afford to open absolutely everywhere people congregate? (Although ridiculously unfair, there is at least some logic in this).

Or pubs are closed because we are a nation of alcoholics and closing pubs is good for public health Covid or no Covid?

That there are threads on boards with posters wanting pubs to reopen with the same restrictions in place as restaurants is an indication of a demand for something unreasonably denied for months.

Deny people anything they enjoy without evidence of good reason to ban it and you will see demand for said thing.

Example: When word got out that Austria was under pressure to not reopen their ski resorts until late January there was uproar from Austrian people.

For many, passing time in a pub is an enjoyable use of part of their leisure time.

Questioning why they are closed since last March and looking for evidence of the comparable dangers were they to operate under restrictions does not an alcoholic make.

Pubs are closed, because the nature of what takes place there and covid are not compatible.

How is social distancing going to be possible or enforceable ? It isn’t...

Pubs would mean a huge uptake in transmission of covid, probably tens of thousands of cases... that happened we are cooked.

Is nobody remotely thinking of hospital staff, who have not complained just got on with it, in massively dangerous and challenging conditions, daily ?

If you want alcohol, go buy alcohol, stick on Netflix, ps4, Skype your mates, call them, whatever....

Pubs and covid simply don’t mix.....

Making stuff up ? ;) hardly, a bit of common sense would help you understand...

It’s not the same as restaurants and gastro pubs at all.

Restaurants and gastropubs.., the primary reason people go there, is to eat and be with friends.. eat food, have a couple of drinks and a good time. Distancing is achievable to a point.

Pubs.. people go there and socialize in a completely different manner, alcohol plays a central part in that. In a restaurant the consumption of food is the objective in a restaurant... the consumption of alcohol and the craic is the centerpiece of pub life..people moving from person to person, no distancing..not really compatible around Xmas in covid times.

Socializing WITH other people, sharing jokes, laughs, TOGETHER....together is something we need to be avoiding.

Simply adhere to the rules and keep yourself and others well.

Its quite plain to see that you haven't stepped foot in a pub since Covid. You cannot move between tables anymore, they function in precisely the same manner as restaurants. You're not going to the bar either, the only reason for somebody to be out of their seat is to use the bathroom, and lots of places mandated you to put on a mask for that.

That's all well and good in theory, but in practice it's a different thing. It's very difficult enforcing a wet pub to behave like a gastropub or restaurant. They're typically not designed solely around seating and tables whereas it's inherent in gastropubs and restaurants.

If you see a gastropub is open, you're pretty confident it's set up with tables and chairs. If you see a pub open, who knows what's going on inside.

I actually give up. All of the non-gastro pubs have had to change their set up to be precisely like this, even the ones with 'chipper set ups'. You have to book a table and its maximum of 6.

You act as if wet pubs are a free for all - they haven’t even had the chance to prove they can manage things the same as these magic gastropubs where a 9e meal wards off covid. Table bookings, time limits and social distance will all work just as well in wet pubs as they do in the establishments serving food.

Pubs are where you go to meet people and mingle. That's their main purpose (besides serving alcohol). You inherently want to go and chat to people in that setting. Someone you recognise at another table? You'll go over, sit down and have a chin wag. Your local bartender is very unlikely to tell you to go back to your own table, especially if it's a small rural pub.

I'm tired of this frankly stupid statement about €9 meals warding off Covid. You know right well why that rule was brought in - to define a substantial meal so that you could differentiate a gastropub / restaurant and just some pub serving peanuts.

By your logic maybe we should give concerts a chance as well? I mean they never had an opportunity either

What a flimsy retort. Your 9e meal differentiates you skulling 6 pints from a pub that doesn’t serve food does it? You clearly consider “wet pub” publicans to be gob****es that will just allow Timmy from down the road to switch tables and have a sing song with Mikey just cos they both had a few drinks. Like none of those business would follow regulations to a tee just to have some trade at the moment, no no it would just be a free for all....As for concerts, if you can’t see how ridiculous that comparison is yourself there’s no point in me illustrating it for you - why allow a country mass when 1 million plus can show up to Mecca eh?

Some of them will follow the rules, sure. But there'll certainly be pubs that won't. And it's not solely the publicans to blame. People should be responsible for their own actions, but I've seen plenty of videos already during the period when wet pubs were open showing complete disregard for the regulations. I'm not saying it was widespread, but it was definitely happening. It's hard to control a group of drunken people, especially when your small rural pub is relying on their business to keep them afloat.

My point with the concerts that is with the best will in the world and strict enforcement, you're still going to get people breaking the rules. It just takes a few people for it all to go tits up. It's an environment that's hard to control, just like pubs, albeit on a much larger scale.

It’s nothing but whataboutery, absolute nonsense and excuse after excuse peddled to keep them closed. Treating the publicans and the people who go to them like ****ing children who can’t be trusted, infuriating condescending bollixology. You do still remember what life was like pre covid yeah?

Best if I stop responding. It's only a discussion forum. Don't let it get to you.

If I order a magic 9€ meal, but don't eat it, will I be safe?

Lots of pubs are open behind closed doors.
