Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Sorry.

.....maybe you were waiting for an excuse to root and flash a custom ROM?

Is it straightforward? On stock but rooted already, but concerned that stuff wont work on the ROM or the Kernel will be too confusing or I will kill my phone!!! Which I will have for at least another year.

So is CM9 the best ROM? Interested in customizing the phone! Was looking at Litening too.

CM9 and Resurrection Remix seem to be the most popular ICS roms.

I'm on 3Ireland and updated to ICS (XEO - 4.0.3) via Odin.

It definitely isn't holding onto the 3G signal as long, compared with GB. Becoming a bit of a pain.

Also, is anyone else on 3Ireland/ICS receiving the "data was disconnected due to roaming" warning notification? If I'm on 2G and connected via Wifi, I keep receiving the notification. It was a bug in 4.0.2 but was meant to be fixed in 4.0.3

Edit: Battery life is shockingly bad compared to GB. From 8am till 7pm and only 15% battery left. I would normally get nearly 2 days from the same usage.
I'm going to do a full wipe - hope that fixes the battery.

I have noticed this too - any fix other than a custom ROM - so far it looks like RR is a good move

Well if you are rooted and have ClockworkMod recovery, it's pretty safe and easy. The important thing is to have a nandroid backup (which will allow you restore the phone to its prior state should there be any problem)

CM9 is pretty good, you just need to remember that you will lose the apps that Samsung put on the phone, this means FM Radio (you can download SpiritFM from play store/xda - free version only has mono sound), anything ending in 'hub', Polaris Office and a few other apps, mostly bloatware.

Flashing CM9 the first time requires a full wipe, so you will need to backup any apps/txts/call log/email settings that you wish but Photos/Music/Videos will not be wiped as they are stored elsewhere. You can then update CM9 to the newest nightly version without a full wipe (always good to wipe the Dalvik cache though) as you wish. It comes with a kernel, so you don't have to worry about that, but if you want you can try a different kernel such as Siyah which is easy to do and doesn't require any backups/wiping

I just had a weird problem with my S2. I went to turn it on and the battery overheat icon came up, even though it wasn't remotely warm.

Then a battery icon with a cross going through it came up when I tried for the 2nd time to start it.

Then it started and said battery disconnected?

Instead of telling me the % of battery life it just says "Charged".

I'm afraid to turn it off incase it wont turn on again.

    New battery needed?

Haha after I posted, I thought to myself - someone is going to ask why I'd want to lower the volume while someone is ringing.

If I was watching a movie and had left the volume on max by accident. The next time I get a call the ring volume is set at max. So the first thing I do is lower the volume then answer the call.

Well that's what I did on GB. Haven't been able to do it on ICS.

    * Edit: I know the ringing volume and media volume are meant to be seperate but for some reason my ringing volume always ends up at the max setting. :o
    Zagato wrote: »
I doubt that's a bug?! I can't see why anyone would want to adjust the volume of their phone ringing while it is ringing, unless they wanted to mute it as quickly as possible (maybe no matter what button they pressed even if it was in their pocket)

I imagine that what you describe is there by design

Can't test it at the moment, add no one ever calls me :-(

I get that too and I have to remove the battery to recover. I assume some app is hogging CPU and warning the phone but I've no idea which one they reset when I remove the battery. Any idea of guilty apps?

    ICS 4.0.3 via Kies

Had the phone repaired under warranty (took 2 days). A component was replaced. Apparently ICS 'stresses' parts of the SGS 2 (and other makes) but no sign of an update from Samgsung.

No issues whatsoever for me with ICS. I'm on stock XWLPG with Speedmod kernel and Jkay theme. Jkays theme ment I could ditch CM9.
Phone is perfectly stable, no lags, great battery, no wifi or data issues.............

Problem with my fone..I decided to try and flash a new rom to my fone..to get CM9.

    This worked fine.

I had rooted and backed up my fone using clockwork mod
However, when I try and restore my original fone image from clockwork mod it gets a bootloop on the samsing GS2 screensaver thing.

    Really annoying..

I can flash new firmware to the fone but what I really want is to get back to my original so I can get my messages, back up apps etc

Any ideas on how to restore my original back up?

but it relieves stress after you think you've bricked your phone!
Having serious problems with my S2, right before I head to Dublin for Forbidden Fruit, great timing!

I was changing battery yesterday and I think I yanked one out while it was shutting down. Anyway when I turn on it won't get network coverage or detect SIM. I try another SIM and that didn't work either. Then I did *#06# for the IMEI and it was blank! I knew I was in trouble then.

Turns out from reading online I probably have a corrupt /efs partition which holds all IMEI info and if I don't have a backup I was bricked. Low and behold I came cross /efs backup on my SD from when I originally rooted the phone. But I can't copy the old efs to the phone no matter what, Root Explorer won't mount /efs as read/write no matter what I try.

Anyway I'm still reading on xda-developers here, trying to fix this. To anyone else I suggest you backup your /efs NOW with this free app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.hellcat.droiddev.ktool&hl=en

As you can see with me, corrupt efs can happen even with the stock ROM and without a backup, you're basically screwed.

I managed to fix this if anyone cares or happens to them. As long as you have the nv_data backup, you're grand. The big problem with me was mounting /efs as r+w, didn't work in 'root explorer'.

have you done full wipe and wiped the Dalvik cache? That is the usual cause of boot loops.

Also take a look at the other thread on this forum about the risk of bricking your phone when flashing stock kernels. On my phone now so can't link it, but it's called something like 'I've got the bug' I imagine it's a small risk but might make you reconsider how much you want those texts. Should be easy to find your apps under My Apps, and then All, when you swipe to the right

Anyone else having this problem with their S2?

It happened first on Sunday while I was on holiday. I had it charging and when I unplugged it the phone started having a spa attack, the media scanner continuously running, the phone making the "plugged in/out" sound, the phone won't go to sleep, if you shut it down it restarts. Texts come through in the summary but not in the Inbox. It seems to be a recent problem and googling for an answer isn't coming up with one.

Here is another with exact same problem, no resolution.

I removed the sim and put it in an old phone i brought with me and later that night I replaced it back in the S2 and it was working ok. Now today it has started acting up after I unplugged it from charging.

    Hi All,

I recently upgraded to ICS (via KIES), since then any contacts which were on my SIM card as well as the phone are only showing up as a number (no name or picture) in messaging app. To get around this I deleted all contacts from my sim card so that there would be no duplicates. The problem is still there! Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Thanks

Just tidied(read: changed to zeam) and configured the mothers new work phone(Desire S had a bit of a bump), a GS2. She had a GS1 but didnt like it but I have to say the GS2 really is lovely.

Everythings working fine(she loves the ICS face unlock) but I just noticed a load of dev options in settings, is this a touchwiz standard(SE user myself) or has she got some sort of branded(voda) dev phone?

Nope, that should be there as far as I know, it was kinda hidden away in Gingerbread (2.3) but they moved it in main settings list for ICS I think.

I am having issues with the battery on my S2. I have the phone a year now. The phone is getting v hot at times. I have had to let the battery die completely and then recharge it. I did this again last night. I started browsing at 11am. It is 11.50 now and the battery is over half down. Before I only had to charge it every night.
Is there a warranty on the battery?

I took the phone into the vodafone store and I have been told that the battery problems are because I haven't upgraded the phone to ICS. I was told that the vodafone network are no longer supporting the old honeycomb OS and thus the phone is having to work harder to get a signal. I don't know if this is complete BS or not. I have to connect my phone to PC and download the ICS software through KIES.
Has anyone else being told this and has it worked?
Apparently a lot of people have had similar issues.

I was thinking it was BS as what he said didn't tally with what was happening with my phone. It seems they want to wipe their hands of battery issues. He said to me that the warranty on the battery is 6 months. Is this true?

What is so good about this ICS update? I have noticed people here having a lot of problems after updating to ICS, thus I was avoiding it.
What options do you have if the battery is just failing. Btw i have everything on power save mode. Wifi, GPS and Bluetooth are always off unless needed which is rare enough, unless i'm using Wifi for a few mins to upload pictures etc.
How much would a new battery cost?

    Thanks

    "Honeycomb"
Ha, Honeycomb was never on the SGS2, it was the tablet only version of Android.

Well there's some new features but I don't see the point in upgrading either. People just like having the latest version of things. For phones, I think you should just use the major software that comes with it. So I'm buying an S3 to test ICS apps on and leaving 2.3 on my Galaxy s2

Are you 100% sure it's the battery? What happens when you charge it, does it charge fully and how long does it take?

If it is the battery, new batteries are dirt cheap. Here's one I bought from Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-1900mAh-Battery-GT-I9100-EB-F1A2GBU/dp/B00567Y7A6/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_cart_2

It has a bit more juice than the stock battery. If you buy 2, they work out at €14 each before delivery, and they throw in a free charger as well. I keep a fully charged spare battery in my wallet for long journeys and stuff, very handy.

That is not a samsung battery though. The warranty on the phone would be invalid.
My phone wont charge. It will only charge if the phone is turned off. Im only getting an hr to hr and a half of surfing and phone is getting hot. The battery is discharging v quickly. Signs of a battery that has been recharged too many times??
