Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Matsuyama MISSES!

    6 or 7 way playoff for bronze...madness

  • Registered Users Posts: 467 ✭✭Dave1711

    Matsuyama masterclass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,306 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

He has missed a serious amount of putts.

The play off should be terrific

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

McIlroy has been frustrating...but how many chances did Matsuyama miss to get bronze or silver, unbelievable.

So it is somehow a 7 way playoff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,306 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Xander gold, Sabbatini silver...the bronze?! This is going to be fun!

  • Registered Users Posts: 62 ✭✭peek a boo

I went out to walk the dog thinking I’d miss the live result 😂 Go Rory

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Rory Sabbatini has been in dreadful form on the PGA tour and was only in it because he took citizenship in 2019. Unreal round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭CH3OH

Get in the hole! Great putt from Rory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,306 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Two down...Casey and Matsuyama...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭CH3OH

And then there were still 5

    Great drive from Rory

    Great drive there by Rory

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,696 ✭✭✭dasdog

I had to get a bit of sleep after 24hrs awake and woke to this 15 mins ago. And this for bronze.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭CH3OH

That was some shot from Morikawa

Must have thought he had the bronze

And looks like at least 3 will still be playing for bronze

    Hopefully 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,696 ✭✭✭dasdog

    Unreal shots there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,306 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    McIlroy misses....zzz

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭CH3OH

    How did that not drop?

    Rory miss

    And now 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,572 ✭✭✭JeffKenna

    Wow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Hung in there well in the playoff, but one medal from seven players in the playoff was always a long shot. He will be very frustrated at the chances he missed in regulation play.

Between that and Kurt Walker missing a medal by one point on one judges scorecard it really hasn't been our morning. All on McClenaghan now...please don't fall off the pommel horse Rhys.

If anything this might silence the critics of golf being an Olympic sport.

Pars not enough to get the job done in such a big play off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭CH3OH

He may need a mini digger to get that ball out ...... or a miracle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,064 ✭✭✭Christy42

I find if you are getting a lot of bad luck there is normally something else going on. We always seem to be "unlucky"and I am not sure how much better other routes would have been for our fighters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Everyone has hard luck stories, ask everyone in every event that comes 4th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,708 ✭✭✭Speak Now

The silver and bronze medallists in the golf both came from way back, 21 players teed off after them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,968 ✭✭✭ebbsy

A lot of the fights are very close also.

The boxing draws were a mixed bag, Aidan Walsh got a great one, being honest that's the main reason he got a medal. Harrington's draw is potentially ok as far as the semis also.

Michaela Walsh, Aoife O'Rourke and especially Kurt Walker got very tough draws, that's just the way it goes unfortunately.

At least the scoring has felt fair in the boxing this time after the absolute shambles in Rio. Some close bouts that could have gone either way but I don't feel that any of our losing boxers were robbed this time around.

Rhys McClenaghan up at 10:41am. This apparently is a real medal hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

This is going to be hard to watch - one slip and it's over...

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭External Association

I'm imagining what I'd be like on the pommel horse 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

    Not our day.

Serious pressure. All your years of work boil down to one minute.

  • Registered Users Posts: 471 ✭✭Piehead

Some serous psychological problems with Eire competitors. Just can’t handle being favourites. That gymnastic guy was an embarrassment

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭External Association

If you have a bad stroke in golf, for example, over 4 days, it's recoverable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 471 ✭✭Piehead

And all the goons back in the RTE will be praising this loser

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭am_zarathustra

He's in an Olympic final that he qualifies for at the top of the field. The pommel horse is a notoriously difficult one. No extra gos, one small error and your gone. He's also very young, much younger than the field. He will be back.

Given he's single handedly raising the standard of gymnastics in the country I think it's fair to praise him. Lambasting a young lad with years of potential left would be fairly embarrassing for the adult choosing that route.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭External Association

I think we could say the same for you. Bit of an obsession with team 'Eire'.

  • Registered Users Posts: 471 ✭✭Piehead

He’s be better off retiring tbh and stop embarrassing himself and the nation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 635 ✭✭✭noelfirl

Congratulations on winning gold in the 'Muppet Troll of the Day' event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Pathetic post, but since you're clearly British as only a trolling Brit would keep incorrectly calling the country Eire, that's to be expected I suppose.

He tried, it didn't work out, hopefully he'll be back in Paris.

    Feel terrible for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,953 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Great interview Rhys, resilient and determined. Look forward to watching him in Paris.

    Great speech.

    Super attitude.

    Great role model

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭External Association

I'd say your cv is excellent.

Your post smacks of someone who's greatest sporting endeavour was probably the egg and spoon race when 8.

What's with the 'Eire' crap? If your team GB most of your recent and present team are dopers, Wiggins, No Farrah etc. Some countries like GB, with low self-esteem, throw huge resources into athletics to boost their ego. Cover up the cracks in the crumbling foundation of their former Empire.

Great attitude. Inside he’ll be gutted but he always seemed the type to be motivated through his mistakes rather than his achievements. Bring it home in Paris.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,991 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Its a fine line on these type of events, one mistake and your medal chance could be gone.

But overall, I think its safe to say we haven't done as well as we thought we might have in these games?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭External Association

You're a sad pathetic loser. That's been your first reaction to every under par Irish performance for a week. What a loser's life.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭External Association

Come on Tom Barr at 1.05!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,064 ✭✭✭Christy42

Definitely not. I think the issue is most of us, myself included, don't keep track of a lot of these sports in between olympic years. So we sort of end up with conflicting views of on one hand these did not do as well as we expected but on the other hand we are also just finding out how well people like Rhys have done over the last number of years to be in a place where a medal is expected.

Even on the rowing which has been our most successful they mentioned they had strong hopes of 4 medals with thoughts of 4 potential golds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,046 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Boards has been full of edgelords moaning about athletes or RTE or pretty much anything Irish for the whole Olympics

Max Whitlock was older than Rhys currently is when he won both gold medals, so he has tons of time - Paris will be Rhys's big chance to grab a gold medal.
