Little bit of negotiation to get it down to bangermomics..

It’s nice to see these firmly in bangernomics parameters now, I think I will try one soon

If I had phone reception here in the house that would be bought. But I don't, and I already have too many cars.

Mondeo looks a steal. 2 litre petrols are rare enough in this country. Hard to believe it comes in a lethargic 1.6 for such a big car.

That 1.6 isn’t bad to go actually! It’s seen as a serious underpowered engine mated with that size of car but they go quite nicely. Compared to the 1.4 mk1 focus it’s a rocket.

We had a 1.6 Mondeo. You're right, it's faster than a 1.4 Focus but it's still very slow and drinks petrol. Ours is still knocking around with over 300k kms on it so it lasted well in fairness.

Currently driving a 2008 1.6 Mondeo and love it. The only issue is the engine is carrying around a lot of weight (as mentioned here). Mine has just over 200,000 but the engine has been 'ticking' really badly when cold for a while now. I think it's worn at this stage.

    Driving a c max 1.6
If you want sensations is not your engine
If you want a bulletproof engine for your missus and forget her ...it is your choice
Said this until 4000 rpm is lazy but from this to around 6300 rpm what I like is the continuous power without any loss
Thirsty drives compensated so far with no visits to the mechanic

Are there any issues with that engine/gearbox/car that you know of?

Terrible, absolutely terrible engine. Those engine were just lobbed into those just to keep up with the popularity of Deisel.

Bit like Honda. When I hear of people wanting a diesel Honda , I always dismay. The best and I believe the largest petrol engine manufacturer in the world and you want a diesel from them. Mad.

And what is wrong with 2.2 diesel from Honda?!

Any 220d lexus I've seen on the road is smoking like a coal plant.....

They are up there with Mazda diesel to the point I'd have more faith and belief in a chocalate engine.....

Absolutely nuts to even think of one....

Crack manifold and few other bits....
They weren't as reliable as any other petrol engines especially the VTEC.....
VTEC were or are bullet proof.

Hi all. Getting the itch to change my current bangernomics 2005 Honda accord 2.0 petrol. Great car but a bit thirsty at just under 34 mpg based on nearly 39k miles in 28 months. Mixed driving.

In keeping with the idea of this thread my previous two bangernomics were replaced at end of life (00 1.2 punto after over 2 years + 01 1.6 avensis after 3 years) so this is a bit of a change for the sake of it.

Torn between staying petrol or going diesel. For petrol I'm thinking of a Mazda 6 1.8 2nd gen 2008 onwards. Any opinions? Any owners on here that can advise on actual mpg?

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2009-mazda-6/23730826

For diesel something like a volvo v50 1.6 or one of the Renault 1.5 dci like a Fluence or megane or Hyundai i30 1.6

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/hyundai-i30-new-nct/23251103

The fear of the big diesel issues is the main concern!

Oh fully agree, loved the torque in them....

I'll be honest I'm depressed driving the megane.... So miss power...

1 owner, years test, small bit of tax and:
The car was originally the last ever prize in the Lyons tea minstrels back in 2001

    €500

It actually looks like a very nice example

    Head gasket failure,
EGR problems and carbon build up.

Best avoided unless you like visiting your mechanic regularly.

Those Mazda 6 with the 1.8 petrol engine is as you’d expect thirsty but fairly reliable. Not overly exciting to drive.

I’m in a similar debate at the moment myself, I’d lean towards one of the 1.5dci engined Renaults purely on value. They seem to be able to put up high mileage if looked after.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,058 ✭✭✭rn

There were lots of those volvo v50 1.6 diesels bought by work colleagues in the 06-10 period. I knew 5 owners. All lovely cars, well finished.

However all gave significant engine trouble before they were 6 years old. No owners left in the office now.

I believe the much rarer 2.0l is more reliable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,615 ✭✭✭grogi

I'd say it is completely opposite. They are not particularly thirsty, but far from beig reliable.

Those engines have very weak oil rings. Oil rings let some oil go through and burn, the level goes down very fast (1l/1000km is completely normal). But this is not the biggest problem - if you let the oil level go too low (which is relatively easy), you'll wear other rings and the compression goes shopping. This very soon fails the car at the NCT. On top of that the everlasting issues with corrosion.

Fantastic cars, very nicely built and superb to drive. But not reliable at all.

    Not reliable at all?

I disagree, I ran one for 3 years without any major issue. My father had one for a similar time without issue. Surprised to hear them as not reliable at all. But just my experience of them.

On the consumption, I found it as thirsty as 2.0 petrols I had.

303k miles on a 2.2 Honda, and never a spanner on the engine yet

Honestly it will be a serious let down from where you are as in comfort and power imo.

However they are a good motor, and in estate form definitely more roomy.

Have the hatch and its quite cramped for me.

Reliable as most other out there now too.

I just got it as needed diesel, cruise control and Bluetooth etc..
