    30 days to go!

Dont want to start on a pessimistic note but I have serious reservations about this Sandra/Russell mentoring stuff, cringed when I saw those big statues of them. What is the point if they cant be eliminated and cant win?

EDIT: It's Rob and Sandra not Russell obviously...

What makes it an even more bizarre decision is (spoiler for season 40 cast)
the fact they're both due back to play the following season

You have got to be joking

What's the betting they'll be given some advantages in that aswell to prevent them being booted out in the first round?

Again more spoilers for season 40, the one after the upcoming season. Not to be read if you enjoy waiting for the season finale to hear about the upcoming season theme.
it's an all winners season so they'd have to hand out a lot of advantages to anyone they'd like to see stay longer than a few days

But whats Russell doing in an all winners season
? 40 should be good though.

Maybe wishful thinking. Boston Rob and Sandra will be the mentors (and Rob is also mentioned in lineup for the winners season).

    🤪

Wait now I'm confused, I didn't even spot you said Russell in your original post. It's Sandra and Boston Rob who are doing the mentoring for this forthcoming season.
Or has something changed that I'm unaware of?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Oh sh1t I'm an idiot sorry, for some reason Rob and Russell got switched in my head, haven't watched the trailer since the reunion ep aired...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

    Last weekend with no Survivor!

(Yes I know its broadcast during the week but its been a Friday or Saturday night tradition for me for many years now...)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,488 ✭✭✭kingtut

Can't wait for the new Season to start but I'm not sure how well the 'mentoring' will work in terms of the overall idea. Statues are so cringey! I guarantee a few will be like "Umm who are these people (when they see the statues)"

Love to see some of the contestants kicking a$$ against Sandra and Rob in the challenges and showing them that they aren't as great as they make out :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 140 ✭✭TimeUp

I agree with you all that the theme is pretty silly. We'll see how that turns out.

I wonder will the mentors get thrown into the game at some stage.

    Hopefully not but probably so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,156 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

Like many, I have very low expectations for this season due to the gimmick but looking forward to watching it live for the first time in a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Hopefully it'll just be a minor annoyance like that Island of Past Mistakes crap that was quickly forgotten as the season went on, not sure how much Boston Rob waffling I can stand listening to tbh, I suppose thats what the skip forward 10 seconds button in Media Player Classic is for...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,886 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Rob isn't going there unless he gets enough screen time to talk sh1te.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I don't mind the two of them to be honest, I just think when you add two returning players to a season, even if they aren't technically playing, takes away from what the editors can do with the new players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,488 ✭✭✭kingtut

A fairly average 1st episode I thought. Can't say any great players are standing out for me just yet.

Don't think the island of the idols was anything special - just felt like Rob and Sandra (more so Rob) are using it to show off how amazing they are meant to be

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,156 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

Pretty ok first episode. Didn't find the Island of Idols as jarring as I expected but it really is a completely unnecessary gimmick given how many seasons deep we are and how knowledgeable contestants should be at this point.

It'll definitely annoy some fans but I feel I can live with it if that is all the screen-time it takes up each week, basically like Ghost Island with narrators. Think it might be some extra cash to get Boston Rob and Sandra on the winners season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,886 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

I wanted to throw something at the screen the moment I heard Robs voice.

  • Registered Users Posts: 217 ✭✭noveltea

Not liking island of idols. pure rubbish i thought and i am normally a survivor enthusiast.

I thought the episode was great. I actually liked IotI, however I'm afraid it'll take up too much time in the regular 42-44 minute episodes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,144 ✭✭✭stargazer 68

I enjoyed it but I have to agree that the IOTI may take up too much of the actual programme - I know they need a new twist each season but I'm not sure how long I can listen to Rob!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,395 ✭✭✭pooch90

Rob was so patronising "how did you think youd go against me" feck off! Because her vote was pretty irrelevant anyway and it was worth a shot?
No stand out players but I do like the Elaine girl (the one they were going to vote out initially)
Glad they got the slimy guy instead!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Island of the Idols is a joke. I was indifferent to the rest, time will tell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Oh yeah really flat start aswell, I mean the intro, it was really badly put together and didnt get you pumped for a new season like they usually do, they were just... there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 140 ✭✭TimeUp

Does anyone know how to watch it online from Russia?

I'm reading you guys eyes narrowed, don't wanna read any spoiler lol

I can never understand why they lie about things such as what happens on the island. they are 100% going to be found out once someone else goes there and then everyone will thing they've come back with an advantage.

Why not tell the truth and say what happened

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I wonder if they are allowed to be 100% truthful?

If I was in their boots I would have been super vague with the details, saying that I've been instructed to not tell everyone exactly what happened, be clear that I don't have an idol but make sure not to outright lie about anything.

I don't mind the 'twist' and it's much better than Rob and Sandra been part of each tribe but I do have my concerns over how much screen time this will get. I'd be perfectly happy if they bumped the episodes up to 'hour and a half' running time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,156 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

Can see some people new folk getting overawed by the experience and not thinking rationally. You see it regularly in the first few days of seasons, running to find idols or telling unnecessary lies about themselves only to only 'come clean' a few days in. They try to get their full survivor experience straight away and it can go badly through stupid risks, like here her taking on Boston Rob or lying about what is on the island.

So after the episode last night it definitely looks like they've fed them the story about the urn smashing, doubt two came up with the same fake story. Again, didn't really mind the time on island of the idols but it already seems like they're struggling to fill the survivor topics to teach. Much easier to win this than the fire challenge, the questions were simple if you paid even partial attention.

Though I liked Molly, I really enjoyed the early 'big move' in splitting up the power group. Bodes well for the season that they're playing hard already and positioning themselves.

    Lovely blindside.

Prom queen Pavarti version 2 is gone. Good call as the threesome was likely to stay very solid deep into the game.

Big fan of Chelsea, she seems like a really sweet and genuine person.

Delighted Elaine survived the first vote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Apparently they are free to tell everyone that Rob and Sandra are on the island of the idols, both just chose to come up with the urns story.

Interesting to see if it'll backfire or whether it'll result in close bonds being formed with the next two to go see it for themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,488 ✭✭✭kingtut

Gotta love a blindside! Looks like it could be an interesting season after all.
Still not loving having Sandra and Rob as 'mentors'. Doesn't really add much value to the episode. Rob and Sandra have pretty much just taken the place of having an idol hidden in every single tree. I'd love a modern season with no idols!

I doubt that they are allowed to say that Sandra and Rob are on the island. Even if they were allowed I don't think anyone would believe them.

The nostalgic part of me wants to agree but despite how much people grumble about idols, they are behind some of the best moments in survivor and are key to the show not regularly becoming a onesided numbers snoozefest. When idols are in play it causes players in power to be paranoid and to split votes, opening up lanes for those on the bottom to flip things.

Having no idols would only work if everyone was playing super aggressively or they didn't announce no idols so people played like they were in play, the latter isn't really having no idols in the game if the players dont know.

I've been impressed with the first two tribals and glad to see people aren't playing it safe. Then again I'm always happy when the underdogs blindside the alphas, so I'm easily pleased.

Survivor started out with no idols and had many successful seasons without them. It also used to be a lot more about actually surviving.

I do like your idea though of having people think idols are in play when in fact there aren't :D

They had successful seasons with the old format but I recently went back to the start to watch every season (hence this being my first 'live' season in a while) and I think for many there is a lot of nostalgia when they look back on those seasons rather than looking at them for what they actually were. I believe a return to a focus on surviving and no idols wouldn't hold up for most of the audience now that we're used to the more exciting gameplay.

There are now numerous survival shows that area much more aggressive test than what survivor ever offered, so they wouldn't be able to top that aspect. In previous seasons we also saw how boring the show can get when the contestants are so malnourished that they lay around all day or most players can't perform in the challenges. It isn't good viewing.

My experience of rewatching pre-idol seasons was that many ended up extremely lopsided and boring (even compared to more recent seasons that were more fresh in my mind). Despite the producers trying to do their magic to make it seem it wasn't obvious were the vote was going, it nearly always went with the side with numbers. Players are generally more aggressive now at positioning themselves to win rather than just get to the end, but it is much harder to swing big numbers moves without the help of an idol. Even when they can't get someone to change they can go down swinging and potentially take out a member or two of the majority.

It isn't impossible that a group with the numbers steamrolls their way through a game now but I think removing idols would make those run of episodes a lot less interesting.

Only seen up to the 3rd visit to the island of the idols so far but for me it was another yawn fest! Doesn't seem like they really have to do much to get the idols!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,886 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

I can't be doing this season every time Rob talks all I want to do is change the channel.

They seem to be already struggling for ideas, now they're down to doing tasks that could come from a hidden idol clue.

Ignoring the island of the idols piece, I'm enjoying the rest of season. Nearly everyone seems to be there to play and thought that immunity challenge was one of the best new ones in a while.

The moaner that is Karishma survives another vote. She's insufferable and contributes a big fat zero.

Great tribal with a beautiful blindside, yet again demonstrating the vulnerability of a so called power couple.

    Gonna miss Chelsea.

Loved the moment where they asked who was going to sit out the challenge. That test could not have gone any worse.

The deadwood that is Karishma survives another vote.Boston Rob is on the money, they're not going to win any challenges.

Good tribal,Noura's laugh is pretty annoying.

Backstory re her arranged marriage was troubling.

I'm really disliking the whole Boston Rob Sandra angle, without any real purpose IMO.

I'll take Boston Rob and Sandra over a Applebees reward takeover.

They haven't had many big sponsors as the early years so getting them back in is always a good sign for the show.

Doubt we'll ever see the car challenge and the car curse return. Watching previous seasons, some of those cars were awful looking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,286 ✭✭✭seligehgit

It's been a long standing and slightly annoying tradition that the music tends to rise to a crescendo that is predictive of the challenge finale.

Very evident on the reward challenge.

It's truly amazing how absorbed players become in ICs when Elaine can make such a hames out of attaining the advantage and nonetheless succeed.

Felt sorry for Jack re the durag comment. It didn't seem intentionally racist but I suppose it could be considered racial stereotyping.TBH I'd to google what on earth it was.

Aaron is now a marked man.Foolhardy to consider jumping ship or giving the impression he was open to it.He's only succeeded unnecessarily in putting a target on his back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

I had to google what a durag was aswell, never heard that term before after all the music/tv/books related to African American culture Ive gone through over the years.

Remember when Philip went nuts a few years and started screaming about being treated like the crazy n
    ?

Rob and Sandra are so pointless its just irritating now.
