Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Why isn't jaxxx married:

    1) Fugly
    2) About as interesting as staring at paint dry
    3) Fat
    4) Is about as funny as a tissue
    5) Rubbish in bed
    6) Other

    I guess so.

Maybe this is a good argument for marriage.
I'm happy taking my chances in my relationship.
Maybe I should think about it more... I dunno.
We don't have property or anything, just renting.
    No life insurance either...

Go on, be honest. It was the 'Other' that got your eye, wasn't it? :D

I used to make flowers out of tissues. So erm tissues can be beautiful.

Might not marry you but I'd probably be up for a ride

Things change when you get into the whole property/kids/pensions/insurance/investments situation, marriage simplifies what can be a minefield. Mainly it's about being legally united as well as personally united.

I imagine it also has religious significance to some, though far less than in the past I'd assume.

    Totally.

Historically of course, marriage has been about money, land, and to put it bluntly, trading of men's daughters.

This is why I refrain from the concept. But the modern romantic idea is a relic of those times.

    Not for me.

A year before Alan Rickman passed away, he revealed he had married his partner Rima 3 years previously in a private ceremony after almost 50 years together.

"It was great because no-one was there. After the wedding in New York, we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and ate lunch."

    True love.

I was married. 14 years. Am divorced. I'd like to get married again but not sure I would be able to do it again. Divorce in late 30's/early 40's really takes its toll. I appreciate my freedom/independence now too much as it takes a long time to get over a long marriage and it changes you.

My standards are just too high.

But what does marriage mean ? if you think about it as a contract (for tax, inheritance purposes), I do see a problem with restricting it to only two parties: real life scenarios can get more complex than that.

PS: actually this thread is not as bad by comparison with "Marriage for an Ambitious Man" from The Gentlemen's Club :)

Lady I'm seeing now is hopefully old enough (36 next month) for any dreams of weddings etc to have been crushed by now and given up upon. Wedding is my worst nightmare so hopefully can avoid till I die :)

That's just so wrong but hilarious.

A friend of mine is almost 70 now. She's been with her partner for over 30 years but never married him. On a night out recently she was interrogated by the local 'nosey aul biddy' as to why she'd never got married. "I don't know really, I suppose I was just lucky" she replied airily.

Took the wind right out of Biddy's sails.

Beautiful, I'm putting that in my stock of replies.:)

Never wanted to get married, not even as a kid looking at beautiful brides in their veils and gowns.

Ended up being crap in relationships so happy on my own. I have a house to myself & travel and socialise a fair bit so I don't feel as if I've missed out on any fun.

I thought like that very strongly so, was having a great time met various men and had great adventures and loved my independence. I needed time on my own after separating then I met my now-husband and completely changed my mind about getting married again.

Having said that I do know people who are together 25 years and have no intention of getting married again both have separated houses but they are together for life at this stage they might as well be married.

Single, 34 and honestly don't even see myself ever meeting someone, never mind getting married :( Having said that, I wouldn't be into having a massive wedding or anything, at this stage I'd settle for someone who I want and wants me back :pac:

Together 15 years and getting married next year. Really for us it's just legally confirming what we've been doing all these years. We should have done it years ago but were too lazy and broke to get around to it.

So even though we are planning a very small wedding, I still wish we had decided on an even smaller one sometimes by buggering off on a holiday and coming back with it as a done deal. Some people are causing minor dramas with their excitement and I don't understand how they can be waaay more giddy and stressed than us yet we are the ones actually getting married.

Why do I want to get married? For the legal stuff mainly. I can see myself growing old with him (Literally - as in, our first couple photo is framed in our living room and our son asked us who those people were :D) but we still fancy each other like mad. I hope we are still like that 30 years from now.

Waiting until we have the house sorted before we even think of blowing money on a glorified day out. If i had my way it would be a registry office job with two witnesses.
