Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You can’t, Bobby. This isn’t the Northern Ireland elections - you can only vote once.

    John Charles McQuaid?

Surely has to one of the most hideous humans to ever wield power in this country, hundreds of thousands left to suffer under the Catholic Rule he had enforced which encouraged suffering through poverty (all while the clergy lived in luxury), the 40/50 years of emigration that accompanied it, the seemingly endless abuse of children, the enslavement of women in laundries and workhouses, baby selling, the entrenchment of Official Ireland as a ruling class under his guidance.

His vision for the country was a total and utter disaster for people forced to endure it. Has to up there.

The Bishop had his own vision of Ireland, and Irish people accepted that vision as their own. how can you blame McQuaid for anything - he was a bishop in the Catholic Church - his prerogatives and beliefs were clear.

So the Irish asked for it then. I see. What was the choice?

It does make my blood boil the masses doffing their caps to this odious creature 50-60 years ago. Living in their "palaces" and leaving to have their ring kissed.

Monopolized education and healthcare. The RCC were the main proponents and cheer leaders of segregation in this country during the 19th century- not the English.

    Parasites.

There was no choice - bishops in the Catholic church are not selected by popular poll.
The Irish people could have made other personal choices.

Formerly disenfranchised majority Roman Catholic population doesn't mind a pro Roman Catholic policy - shocker.

Well that's a thorough and well thought out rebuttal.

There is some very good reading material out there that highlight the lengths the RCC went to after the Famine to monopolize education and healthcare in Ireland. E.g it is no coincidence that the boarding schools in Ireland founded all within a 20-30 year period during the mid 19 century.

Ireland was to become the little breeding ground for the missions. A nice conveyor belt of fresh meat.

When Ireland was at it's weakest and most desperate post Famine, the RCC swept in like vultures mid 19th century and set up a nice little cartel for themselves. One aspect was to lobby the English and insist that education be segregated. This is historical and documented fact.

Judging by your emotive knee jerk reaction I will hunt down an article for you.

In fact, Fintan O'Toole wrote a great piece on it a number of years ago. I will try and find it

Don't be so ridiculous. You are showing a crass ignorance of the Irish society during the 19th and early 20th century.

Who said anything about bishops being selected by popular poll?

HECTOR Ó H'EOCHAGÁIN. He should be on the list also. Back in the 2000’s this gob****e was inexplicably everywhere on the telly, the radio, advertising whiskey and those f*cking awful irish horse racing ad’s. His brand of cheeky, chummy, “hail, fellow, well met!” mateyness was the irritation. And then he seemed to vanish - hopefully back to Navan, never to return.

There's a theme to those options.

Padraig Pearse was as responsible as anyone else for scuppering home rule and causing partition. Plus he was a paedo. How many of the people in the poll are paedos?

I vote some Pope or other for protecting child abusers and strangling Irish society.

Churchill was a mediocre politician with far more failures than victories.

He did not win WWII. He never fired a shot in his life and it was the Russians and US that did most of the hard graft during WWII.

Did he not take part in a cavalry charge in Sudan, escape from a POW camp in South Africa and go to the trenches in the great war?

He probably did fire a gun I'd say

He was in a good few war zones in fairness.

Imho any leader of a country that sends their troops into a war should have had combat experience themselves.

In the context of history though. It'd be terrible to conclude Conor McGregor is the most hated person in Irish history when Henry the VIII wiped out entire towns in less than a year in the country.
