I'm watching it now.. such a talented cast absolutely wasted! :(

EDIT: 11 minutes, 11 seconds.. that's how long I made it into the first episode. Embarrassing!

Very disappointed, was looking forward to this and with the stellar cast I was thinking how bad could it be.
It was cringeworthy the Comedy definitely doesn’t suit the majority of the cast .
I really struggled to make it to the end of first episode.

Exact same as you....was looking forward to this...but so disappointing. Managed / pushed myself through 2episodes...you were right to quit early.....it didn't get any better

Only saw the funeral episode not terrible but it didn't really work. Not surreal enough to let the stupidity of the main "bit" pass. No one, genuinely no one, would behave like they did. So it's too ridiculous for dramedy, which it maybe could have worked better as imo. I'll still watch the rest, perfectly harmless way to burn a couple of hours

Pat Shortt is ageing well though.

I would say I actually liked The Walshes when it was on so my judgement of Irish comedy may not be the best!

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

It’s not a documentary:) I suspended belief from the start , he can’t even play guitar ffs

I'll wait to watch the others before I make up my mind, certainly not bothered enough either way to stress over it but you clearly liked it, that's fine too, keep fighting the good fight. :pac:

Ha I had a mad one yesterday in hospital and had that to watch after I got out and it got me through a hole and then thought “let’s see what boards think “ and it was surreal how angry it made people:) I honestly thought it was a good natured farce

Watched all of this yesterday. I think I was expecting too much when I saw the cast tbh cos it was one of the worst shows I've ever seen. Wouldn't have bothered past episode 1 only for it being on demand and the next episode starting straight away. Complete nonsense and not even in a funny kinda way, just terrible.

Some nice shots of Dublin in it though. Always fun trying to work out the locations when watching and Irish show.

Watched a few episodes last night and thought it was a good laugh.

Light hearted and witty comedy set in Ireland which isn’t a common occurrence.

When the actress in the play went to tie her shoelace.... awesome stunt :)

I didn’t enjoy Brendan at all

Ned deneghy is a great Irish actor and he wasn’t really put to use at all , enjoyed the rest

Nothing amazing but not the worst either. The weirdest thing was seeing Pat Shortts arse as he's a regular in the Pub I work in!

I don’t know how to explain this one

I had a look back at the Love/Hate debut thread from 2010. Lots of people saying it was crap. Haven't seen Frank of Ireland, but careful not to fall into the same trap!

I enjoyed it very much (foi) and anyone I recommend it to seemed the same , just got getting the representation in this thread :)

I recommended it to a lot of my friends, they sat down to watch last night with their partners. Few choice words coming back to me, they copped I was winding them up within 10 mins. Don't think anyone got past 2 episodes

FWIW I watched the first episode and thought it was very silly/immature humour but enjoyed it nonetheless.

The idea is good - a 30 something failure in life still living at home with his mammy. It could have been really good. Instead they made the characters of Frank, Doofus and Mary so silly that its unrealistic. For a comedy like this to be funny people have to be able to identify with the characters - not many people could relate to being like Frank, Doofus or Mary. Every scene that could be funny is overdone which makes it ridiculous and unfunny ( Like the funeral scene ).

It was like a comedy a group of 11 year olds would write and act. Its a petty - the Gleesons had a great opportunity here but failed. Nobody I know has anything positive to say about Frank of Ireland.

Agree fully , it had great potential but its so forced and over acted and the Comedy is just stupid .
How the Gleesons looked at a script like that and taught it was a good idea i don’t know .
Doofus character is just plain bizarre , the whole lot is so far from Reality .. I honestly don’t know how a group of established writers and actors taught this would work .

I'd go as far as saying its actually WORSE that ' eamon & Bridget'..... and that had set a new low for rte so- called " comedy"

I've got through 4 episodes and it certainly won't win any awards but it's by no means the worst thing I've ever watched.
Brendan gleeson makes an appearance apparently but I haven't seen him yet.

I get the impression peoples expectations lay somewhere in the series tv comedy zone. Reading some international user comments that are more favourable but some Irish style names adding absolute hatred into the mix :)

I will say the critical reviews are poor

I'd safely say with absolute certainty, this show will not be recognised as good, ever. It'll be forgotten about as the massive fail that it is.

Unfortunately it’s a laugh free zone, and I do think the Gleesons are talented actors, maybe this just shows their strength is not in script writing.

I would imagine the only people who find it funny are teenage boys. It's juvenile humour.

If complete gash like Damo & Ivor can find an audience then this thing will probably have its "fans" wholl ensure it gets a second series.

Wrong. 48 year old woman here who loved it.

....and I'm not related to the Gleesons

Can I ask the people who hated it; what would you consider a good comedy?

    Tom O’Connor, now there’s a real comedian.

I think it's all subjective. Everyone will have a different opinion. Would be boring if we all enjoyed the same things.

I didnt enjoy Frank at all, as I said before I think my expectations were too high when i saw the cast and it just didn't deliver bar 1 or 2 good funny lines.

For context, I also hate that Damo and Ivor nonsense mentioned a few posts back.

But a show that is similar to both Frank and Damo and Ivor, The Young Offenders, I enjoyed. Can't say why because it's the same juvenile haphazard comedy.

Basically, some people will like it, others won't. I don't see the issue either way

I don't see an issue with people not liking it - my issue is the people who take the view that it's a total failure of a show and that the Gleesons have ruined their careers.

"I hate it, so everyone else does" kind of mentality.
