I have been getting some emails in the last few days from some gambling companies, Titan Bet being the biggest, saying that due to new legislation in Ireland they could no longer offer a sportsbook to Irish customers but casino games and poker would continue as usual.

Anybody know what specific legislation they are referring to?

I got one from netbet so I looked into it. It's a 1% tax on Irish bets paid by the bookmaker. It already applied to actual shops so it's being applied online also as of today.

    There's a shock.
    Casino & Poker will remain.
Casino would be a cash cow & Poker they take a commission.
All they would have to do is "wear the 1%" as most bookies will.

    same here with 10bet

have a titanbet account...didnt know that was affected
little loss in fairness to anyone of them who dont absorb the 1%

edit, my titan bet account doesnt appear to be affected

As a result of regulatory changes we will no longer be able to offer our Sports
betting and Virtual Sports services to Irish customers.

    Email Received from Sporting Bet!
Won't be a lot left if they all start closing accounts.
Government could end up getting bugger all from the tax.

These no longer accept sports bets from residents of Ireland. I am sure there are many more to come.

    Sporting Bet
    32red
    Titan
    Netbet
    10bet
    Genting
    Marathon
    Vernons
    Smarkets not taking new customers...

We're very sorry, but for legal reasons Smarkets is currently unable to accept customers from the country you're connecting from.

If you think this is in error, please contact support@smarkets.com. We think your country code is: IE.

SMarkets is a betting exchange, wonder how they would charge 1% to an exchange account?

Legislation is changing the face of all online gambling all over Europe. In all honesty its probably a good thing if you are in a country open to getting it all legalised

The Irish government has introduced new betting legislation, we welcome this step and have applied for an Irish remote bookmaker's license

However, until the license has been issued, restrictions on game play needs to be applied. We expect to receive the Irish bookmaker's license within the coming days, we will inform you once we have resumed full availability.

If any questions please contact our Customer Service team.

We thank you for your understanding!

That is from bwin, expect that they are not talking rubbish and will be back soon.

Does anybody know if the same legislation applies to exchanges or peer to peer betting sites, like betfair or betdaq?

racebets back in action, don't use them a whole lot but nice to have another option either way
they should've passed on a freebet for the inconvenience however :pac:

This means that Irish customers can now bet on all of our markets! Simply login to your RaceBets account and you can start betting, right away!

Is there any list of sites allowed to operate in the irish market? Looked but cant find any

good and bad to this, feel it was rushed through far too quickly so much so that licences hadn't been applied to, surely it should have been flexible .5 or 1% range rather than just 1%, i.e 1% on Irish Sport based sports and dwindling based on other factors. 1% just eats into margin they give customers really.

Isn't it only 1% for games/casino etc. but 15% on sports bets?

15% on intermediaries, i.e brokers or betfair comm I think, thats a large chunk for them but there irish based anyway, assume there are ways like with corp tax not to pay all 15%

Is there any protection for consumers from this law when companies refuse withdrawals or is it just a tax raking tool?

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭Floody Boreland

    Netbet are back.

They stopped taking new customers with the new tax coming into effect I think, probably change policy soon with this. Have potential but they charge for deposits that no other exchanges do so that's a drawback.
