Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I presume it was inside the RTÉ graphics department - they really need to take another look. I know simple can be nice and clean but in this instance it looks like a 10 year old designed them on PowerPoint.

    Where has the forecaster gone?

Hopefully they are refusing to work with the "new" (older looking) graphics.

Saw the rainfall radar tonight for the first time. Looks to have been upgraded. Also the topography map is a bit better if I'm not mistaken?

An improvement overall, they just need to work on a few icons which look like a 2 year old drew them with a box of crayons. But then so did the beeb's ones back in the day.

Their studio (not sure if it's in RTÉ or Glasnevin) also needs an upgrade to HD. Noticeable drop in quality and blurring during the weather.

    The studio is in RTE

Saw the voiceover. I hope it was a technical glitch that forced them to do that and not that this will be the standard forecast from now on.

Very strange choice to put that out at 6 o clock. Irish people have watched the weather at 6 and 9 broadcasts since TV began!
If tonights effort was a result of cutbacks they've made a huge mistake targeting that forecast. They have two on weekdays between 4.30 and 6, that's where they want to cut down if they're going to do it .

Yep. The 6 and 9 slots are non negotiable I think. The other ones can be downgraded if absolutely required but even that is a retrograde step

Think I heard somewhere that they're getting rid of the 24hr news channel?

Talk about retrograde, whilst other networks are seeing growth in this area, here it's being chopped.
Next they'll be switching back to b&w and 576 x 720 PAL quality.

I guess when you squander astronomical fees to the rte “superstars” then eventually cold reality has to bite at some stage.

Eff public service broadcasting seems to be the attitude out in Montrose.

Personally I’d be happy for them to point blank refuse to pay those ludicrous fees to extremely mediocre “talent”, rather than trying to minimise our already fairly minimal national weather report broadcasts.

I didn't know that RTE where thinking of scraping the RTE News channel. A shame if they do because that channel could be developed into a very good channel with more live news and documentary style programming.

Just after watching the forecast on RTE and I think some of the graphical changes are good, but they really need to fix the colour contrast, particularly the dark clouds icons which blend in with the background far too much. It would not take much to change the colour contrast of those symbols.

Not certain of it, but thought saw it mentioned somewhere, so again, not certain.

All other news channels are seeing massive surges thanks to TrumpExitous news and the weather itself.

The main issue now with the weather seems to be legibility of all text, particularly that yellow with white numerals (for low temps) fails legibility tests 1:1.8. A vector pack of rf-weather-icons can be purchased for $10.

NewsNow is rumoured to be going. It has potential, but RTE have been hamstrung by them not allowed to carry advertising on the channel (Pat Carey made that decision (along with others that have hampered saorview) to kowtow to Sky (who don't allow themselves be regulated here!) and TV3, after that FF Government was voted out!).

Terrible graphics and hopefully the voiceover is a once off. Not the same without a presenter.

I think it was a technical glitch.if it were a presentation change I think the graphics shown would be different,in the form of a few different graphics as they went through the forecast like they did in the 80s.

Oddly it felt like going back in time, with the 'new' hideous retro graphics and the voice over presentation.

why did they hire skeletor to do the weather?

They might as well get the white stick from the late 70s now as well.
The changes are quite frankly pathetic

How hard can it be to make the weather legible?
All this squinty eyes isn't good.

Looks like the BBC Weather is now making the transition from the UK Met over the Meteogroup, with some nice graphical forecasts now on their site, which go out to about 6 or 7 days:

I think they transitioned last year

Meanwhile new on the sky news weather slots is a credit at the bottom of the screen saying ‘Data supplied by the met office’
    I hadn't seen that before
It’s as if either SKY or the met office want to make THE point

I dont like the RTE graphics at all

Why cant they use the radar they have on twitter in Met Eireann on website AND TV?

The maps on bbc weather without the stupid clouds were hideous at first but now they are the most effective. Sky uses them too so why is RTE in a timewarp?

Probably the same reason why RTE never has any good quizzes like BBC or ITV.....just no originality or imagination.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭pad199207

The 5 min composite radar should be accessible on the website. If it was subscribable I’d pay it. The radar is top notch.

Compared to the rubbish one on the website now...

A royalty-free pack of weather vector graphics can be readily sourced and downloaded for an average expenditure of $10usd.

Basic legibility assessment costs next to nothing, just takes a quick look by one or more people, and a yes or no to approve them for use.

The BBC gives a much clearer and more accurate forecast over yer mans shoulder.
They don't even explain themselves very well on RTE.

Joanna Donnelly just acknowledged, mid-forecast, that the temperature graphics on the yellow background are difficult to see, and that they "are working on it".

Good to hear, finally, but who passed them as fit for purpose in the first place?

I heard her say that alright.
I have no problem with them or seeing them personally, but they must be getting complaints, so I guess they are acknowledging and acting to fix the problem.

They were changed on the 9 news forecast, the numeral now appears in dark blue against the yellow background with white border, problem solved.

No harm. The colour scheme just wasn’t working.

Far far better. Now just to get rid of those embarrassing weather icons.

The ‘Gale’ icon looks like steam coming out of a boiling kettle

Flippin heck. Maybe Joanna has been changing her own forecasts by hand with MS Paint.

It could be my imagination or has anyone else noticed since the introduction of the new weather symbols, they tend to use the cloud, rain predictive sequences and wind flow charts more and more, and focus less on the weather symbol charts.

Perhaps they are slowly trying to wean people off this type of traditional weather graphic presentation and come more inline with the BBC presentation style.

I personally get a much more accurate picture of the weather when the show the rainfall/cloud predictive sequences.

This may also explain the hideous weather symbols.

It is annoying that so many people are complaining about these new graphics and yet nobody at base had seen how bad they are. We have no intention of buying a 50" screen TV but programme makers seem to think we all have one, the titles/credits are so tiny that it is impossible to read most of them but back to the weather; Are we to assume that the nearer we live to Athlone the more accurate will be as far as the summary is concerned (in our case it is 90Km) . I would also love to know why there is such a small depiction of the map of Ireland. I get to see the west coast of Britain and a lot of The Atlantic and very little of Ireland which makes no sense to me at all. The graphics might improve when the possibility of fog is gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭squarecircles

Joanna Donnelly referred to the graphics as "old fashioned" after the 9 news.

It's becoming apparent now that they are begining to focus more on the rain, cloud sequences instead of the dated weather symbols.

For older people it must be very difficult to make out the 'new' graphics where there is almost no contrast in colours.

For both young and old I would think.

I wonder are the graphics supplied by RTE Graphics or Met Éireann??

I'd say they're created in house by RTE.
Or first year graphic design students.

The new Meteo forecast graphics on the BBC are miles better (and better than the old Met office uk pics)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭pad199207

I wouldnt be too over gone on the new BBC graphics. Its quite hard to distinguish between cloud and snowfall.

But sure look as long as snowfall proves to be elusive as ever each winter we wont have that problem. Rain is easy to make out so thats grand.

Today's update on the BBC is very poor indeed, even their website is asking for flash player plugins.
In comparison to all their previous versions, and everyone else's, this is very much a downhill effort from them.
Even RTE's low-contrast and hard to read temps are better that their new 'wee boxes'.

I really like the new look on BBC Weather, but nothing will ever beat their late 1990s-early 2000's look.

In all the years watching the bbc weather i never noticed that.
I'm not mad about the new graphics especially as Ireland is smaller now.

    The new BBC graphics:

During the forecast presentation add the new clouds, etc. overlay graphics animations, but remove all those words. Most of all do it on *a map of the UK only*.

FYI, I really dislike them if you could not tell.
