Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    welcome to the new students :D

    we've been trying to encourage more use of the forum by students, so feel free to start/contribute to threads. We won't always be able to help, as you guys are at the stage where you have to know some pretty mental science that a lot of us won't remember :P

    But make the forum yours. Have some fun and maybe learn something (or teach the rest of us something!)

    Hey, my name is Ronan and I'm just about to enter 2nd year of the UCD graduate medicine course.
    I'm loving the course so far but not too keen on explaining to my anatomy lecturer that I accidentally cut the anterior vagal trunk and oesophagus during my dissection project. If I don't post on the boards again it's a good bet that I’m been used for dissection.

    It's interesting to read through this thread again. It started 2 and a half years ago, and things have changed for a good few people. Me included. So, it's time to update I reckon.

    I'm now a public health registrar, with a HIV subspecialty. I was a paeds trainee when this thread started!

    I still do a bit of paeds in the local hospital. Also sometimes do the local refugee clinic. I'm involved in a clinical trials group, which mostly does vaccine trials. BUt I'm also involved in some swine flu research, and some HIV research.

    As if I wasn't busy enough, I'm doing a masters degree in public health.

    Hoping to work in the field on international development. Main interests are HIV and sexual health in the third world.

    Hey everyone (again :))
    I'm reapplying this year to do medicine anywheres that'll take me. Applied the year just gone by as a mature student and got 4 interviews but lost out due to lack of hospital experience so taking steps to fix that this year! Also planning on resiting some exams to boost the points, had planned that last year but missed a few due to the interviews. I'm finishing a Gdip, possibly Msc in Biomedicine, and still working in the Pharma side industry of things. I'm also way too much of a lurker and not enough of a contributor on teh forums so must change all that too :P

    why dont you just do the GAMSAT and apply for the 4 year course?

    The main reason is my end degree result wasn't good enough unfortunately.(Missed out by 1%!!) I'd also like the option of summer holidays for a few years though to work up cash for fees etc and 2 extra years of school won't kill me if thats the case.

    ah yeah thats really unfortunate, but some of the UK colleges do take 2.2s and you could maybe ask to repeat the last year/modules? (as i gathered i think you were repeating the LC's), but yeah, i think if you want the extra holidays the summers are good to work up the cash, but id say you'd make 3 times as much as an intern :P

    Aye, it's something I'm looking into alright. It's funny, it's always something I really really wanted to do, but it wasn't until missing out on the first interview I realised just how much of me is tied into doing it if that makes any sense? I don't think I have ever taken a turn down at interview as hard before!

    Good idea Tallaght, things have moved on a bit!

    I had just started my final year when this thread started. Since then I've finished my Intern year and I've relocated to Brisbane where I'm a resident in Emergency Medicine. Gonna move back to Ireland for a job next July - in what, I have no idea!

    My name is Joe, I'm going into my 4th year of maths in Trinity. I have over-analyzed my thoughts about studying medicine after graduating and so will take a year out to think about it, and hopefully get some shadowing experience (as well as to be prepared for GAMSAT/UKCAT and 8 years study in a row would be a longgggg time).     My name is Michael and I'm currently 27 years-old
    I was a PhD student (2.5 yrs) up until the end of May when I resigned. My project was focused on Dairy Science. I hold a primary degree in Biotechnology and a masters in Biomedical Science. Medicine is what I want to do.

    I'm doing the UK exam this September. I'll be better prepared for the Irish exam in March next year. I'd love to pass the exam the first go but the time constraint is my biggest problem. I hope to learn alot from this exam.

    I've been in & out of this forum for the past year so I'm not exactly new here but I kinda felt out of place as I was just doing a pre nursing course. I am starting children's & general nursing in DCU in September so I'll probably be in & out a bit more. I just thought now would be a good time to take 2 minutes to introduce myself. :D

    Going into 3rd year Physiotherapy. Placement starting next week (hence on Boards procrastinating rather than looking over pre-placement literature!). Not sure what area of Physio I'm interested in really - there's so many areas!

    I'm in my 2nd year of Human Health & Disease in Trinity , I love it!

    My interest within the course are anatomy ,rare contagious diseases and nuerodegenerative diseases. I hope to study early onset Parkinson’s Disease for our 4th year research project.

    I’m not quite sure yet what I want to do after the course , maybe epidemiology or postgrad med ,we'll see :)

    I did Biomedical Science for 4 years in Galway and then I did a Masters in Neuroscience in King's College London last year.

    I'm hoping to do GEM in Poznan this September, now i'm just volunteering in a hospital (+ teaching) to gain some experience in a medical environment!

    In my last year of a Business degree abroad and am considering doing GEM next year (ideally in Kings College London or UCD).

    Realized during my studies that I get too complacent when pushing papers - it doesn't feel like my work is doing anything. Interested in the diagnostic process, the 'buzzing' atmosphere of the hospital and finding a speciality where new discoveries are constantly being made. :)

    P.S. Does anyone know what happened to that loooong thread that was on here a few months/years ago that was based around the life of a doctor in Ireland? Was quite negative in places but I remember finding it fascinating as it was such a massive collection of experiences... Nevermind, found it

    Last time I posted in here was before I started first year and now I'm going into 4th year. I'll be a nurse soon! Of all my placements neonates was my favorite so I'm hoping to end up there when I qualify. I still have an interest in doing grad med but so much has changed in my life over the past 3 years that I would have to work for years as a nurse before going for it. I'm sure the experience will stand to me. Fingers crossed I'll be a grad med student in my mid 30s :)

    I see that this thread isn't that active but anyway ..

    My name is Eoghan. I'm 17. I'm a first year dentistry student . 5 years seems like a long time but I think it will fly and I like the prospect of being a fully qualified dentist at 22. I also love the idea of helping people , making people feel better and educating people on their health . This is the reason I chose health sciences .
    I have a huge interest in science and especially health sciences . I really enjoy physiology and anatomy and especially the clinical aspects.
    I play a lot of guitar and exercise and occasionally I like to Rubik cube but not so much nowadays .

    At the moment I really want to become a maxillofacial surgeon . I like seeing the graphic procedures everyone looks away from on tv and I enjoy studying health science so much that I want both a degree in medicine and dentistry . However things could change in the years to come but that's my end goal. :)
