Well why not do it then, not rocket science, get it fohhking done .

Not as if there won’t be more games on TV. Let’s get out of the caveman mentality and enhance the experience.

Leinster competitions with Leinster referees always goes well for Galway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,962 ✭✭✭threeball

Can you put a hammering like that down to the ref. I'm not sure of the relative strength of the teams but that was a tanking.

I'd seriously worry if a person would favour another county because of something so flaky as a "province". Surely that kind of thing with cameras etc would see the refs dispatched with.

Losing by 19 points to that shower is never a good result. They're consistently also rans in the AI. But on the basis of 2021 we are even worse and backed it up against Waterford. It's actually grim to see next to zero return from dominating at underage.

No you can't. Galway well beaten all over the field. Tactics were non existent. High balls into Kevin Cooney when he was doubled marked........

The reason I mentioned the ref was four incidences that happen directly after each other. Dublin half back charges out with the ball trying to burst through two Galway defenders. Held up. Free out to Dublin. A minute later Jack Grealish tried the same. No free. Ball turned over. Dublin point.

Galway win a line ball. Cathal Mannion acts the clown. Two bookings. Ball thrown in (right descision) 30 seconds later Dulin win a free off GMAC a few fist pumps and roars and the Dublin lad throws a dig at GMAC he pushes back ball brought forward 447 yards.

Just frustration. Long way to go for a hiding

When Galway were sort of still in the game. I could hear Shefflin roaring ‘keep it keep it’ fairly often he obviously wants Galway to have a more possession based style?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,962 ✭✭✭threeball

All Galways best hurling in the last few years is when they went short. Going long doesn't suit our skill set or players available. Unfortunately as soon as we put a middling big lad up front we just lump ball on top of him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,312 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I was just told by an incredulous Galwayman that in the last 14 times Galway Hurlers played Dublin in Parnell Park - Galway only won 5 times.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I presume you're not including 2017 in that when we had plenty of men up front who could look out for themselves?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,962 ✭✭✭threeball

I wasn't but even then we really only had Johnny Glynn, most of the other forwards would have preferred it played in front or into space. In reality we still had most of the 2017 team available last year and none of them wanted lumped ball. We went behind numerous times in the league playing that style and used short snappy hurling to get ourselves back into it.

They were 4 years older last year and a lot of their legs and pace were gone. It was apparent in the Dublin game and blindingly obvious in the Deise match. That's new mgmt's first priority to restore drive and freshness to the team.

Better mix of new and established.

    Thought it was tomorrow.

6 point win. Two wins against tier two wins that weren't exactly clinical and thrashed by a lower end LMcC team.

    Not looking good tbh.

The notion we hadn't as strong as a team as Dublin doesn't hold much water considering how bad the "established" players played last year against that same team.

Off the Ball started a hurling ranking and your man who picked it had Galway 9th (last of the LMCC teams) and tbh it's a fair assessment based on 2021.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,962 ✭✭✭threeball

I never like to see what he did last weekend, throwing in a load of rookies and seeing if they can hack it. Its not fair and it never ends well. You need established guys around you as its a different game to club hurling and not all the guys you try out are close to intercounty standard.

I see that as 3 games where we could have learned about 8 or 10 players lost and we now know close to zero about any of them. The league will be so competitive we won't have that chance again. This is a squad low on confidence so losing a scatter of league games to find additional back up isn't really an option.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,155 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

Because going well in the League last year stood us well come championship.

Walsh Cup is only Micky Mouse. I'd expect the likes of Fleming and Glennon to feature with a better mix of established players (not necessarily lads up to anything at intercounty anymore though like Niall Burke or Padraic Mannion).

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,962 ✭✭✭threeball

That's not the point. A team low on confidence coming into the championship off the back of 3 or 4 losses isn't going to fare well in the championship either. He had a chance to find out about some players and wasted it because he packed the team with newbies and that never works.

    Great game of hurling this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

Brian Cody very lucky he's not sitting in the stands. Great quality from both teams. Eanna Burke may have played himself back into the Galway panel.

Can you strike a penalty past the 21metre line?

Jesus, that was harsh. Much better team overall.

Hard luck to Thomas'. Great performance. Robbed really. The Fennelly penalty was charging so should have been a free out. Best team lost.

  • Registered Users Posts: 839 ✭✭✭Deskjockey

Commiserations to St Thomas, they were the better team. That penalty at the end was a joke. The goal chance butchered in the first half will haunt the lads involved unfortunately.

    Absolute Heartbreak

He grabbed out after he was pushed. Any defender would do the same to make sure it wasn't a clear run on goal. Fennelly made no attempt to side step him. He just put two hands on his chest and pushed. That foul preceeded the grab by the Thomas's back

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,221 ✭✭✭tanko

Yeah he dragged him down, brain dead stuff. All he had to do was put his arms out and the ref would have had to give a free out for charging, the forward was looking for a pen and the defender fell for it. Why did a back not go and meet him well outside the big square and foul him there if he had to.

For the second goal the way the defenders lined up was a mess, the free was taken nowhere near it was given tho.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,440 ✭✭✭JustJoe7240

Maybe so but there's very little in it between the charge and him pulling him down. As @tanko said, All he had to do was put his arms out. The pull down was blatantly obvious, The charge was not. Very entertaining game all the same, Couldn't understand why the didn't pack the line for the free.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,380 ✭✭✭MfMan

Thought Fennelly / Headd were both in the process of falling over when instinctively Headd grabbed him - very unlucky. Possibly a more experienced player would have known how limited Fennelly is and played him accordingly. St. Thomas' fault at bit too though, a stray pass in midfield (not for the first time) was intercepted, leading to the penalty. Did Shamrocks wing-back get MOTM? If so, why not TJ?

For all the errors they made, it was cruel on Toms. Kept the likes of Eoin Cody and Adrian Mullen largely quiet, certainly in the second half. Could have possibly gotten a bit more out of Daragh Burke, Regan and Farrell but in the context of the match, Shane Cooney's presence would surely have tilted it their way.

Don't think anyone is going to lose sleep over the Walsh cup. No real correlation between league and championship anyway; a good run last year was of no benefit to us while we had a bad run in 2012 and reached the AI final that year. Main thing is that the management recognise and address the structural deficiencies in the team, particularly nos. 5 - 9.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,962 ✭✭✭threeball

I'm not claiming that the walsh Cup means anything or that we should be looking to win it. My point is, if you want to try out new blood then firing a load of inexperienced young fellas into a team is a waste of time. You learn nothing about them unless they are part of a more experienced group. A player not up to standard will pull down 2 or 3 lads round him as they try to cover his deficiencies. 3 of them in a team and the whole thing is a shambles.

Waterford and Ballygunner supporter here... commiserations to St Thomas. Your team was immense today, way better than Ballyhale, and would have been worthy finalists. It's a pity that games can turn like that on slightly questionable decisions, but we all know sport can be cruel. You can hold your heads high for the performance today - no it doesn't make up for being out of the competition, but you gave the neutrals a wonderful spectacle today. Best of luck for next year.
