Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi Cailleachdubh,

What is your relationship to the person you are requesting info on? Have you been asked about your status as next of kin? I recently got info on my great grandfather from the dept of justice through an FOI request and no one asked me to prove I was related. Maybe mental health records are different though :o(

My great grandfather seems to have been badly injured during his time in Grangegorman - I know he was physically fine when sent there so I would really like to know what happened him. Damn this next of kin business!!

He's my great-grandfather (we spoke about this before via PM!).

Good news - I received my records today. Unfortunately, not as much information as I would have like but I'm nevertheless delighted with what I got. It's just the committal documents and documents pertaining to his death. Found out he was on in the hospital for 3 months before he died there.

I'm wondering whether he also spent time in the Richmond War Hospital (on the same site I believe). Does anyone know whether clinical records from here are available?

Sorry! Yes I had forgotten. Terrible memory! Delighted to hear you got the records Cailleachdubh. Was there a photo of your great grandfather? I had read somewhere that Grangegorman had photographed most of its patients on admission. Was there any record of who visited your great grandfather?

My great-grandmother's file had a photo, which was fantastic. I was able to match her up with older unidentified photos.

Thx Pinky! I would be delighted to see a picture too. Obviously, I don't expect exact details but what kind of info did you receive in your file? Was there info on your great grandmother's general well being / visitors?

If you read back in this thread, I posted the details previously.

I've been to the sorting office and collected the file.
    Bowled over!
There is a photograph of her, description, etc.
    Lots of medical stuff.
    Letters from her children, etc.

One of the best things: list of people who were allowed visit, all identified by family relationship. This has yielded the married name of 3 sisters, so I'm looking at adding about 12 new people to the family tree once I confirm some marriage certs.

That was a couple of years ago now - I've added about 50 people to the tree since then, stemming from this success.

I was really hoping there would be a photo, as I had read the previous post from Pinkypinky, but unfortunately there was none in my case. There are no surviving photos of my great-grandfather in the family so I was disappointed with this alright.

No records of who visited him, but there were 2 next of kin names given on his committal warrant - his wife and his sister. Apart from the Commital forms, the other documents were: 2 documents stating time and date of death and one copy of a telegram to his wife informing her of his death.

His case-notes were not located, unfortunately, so there is no medical/clinical detail in the notes.

A relation of mine was in Grangegorman and it turns out he died in a fire at the facility. I got some information about him from HSE but no information about the fire.

Sorry to be posting in such an old thread but I just wondering if anyone has any more information on who to contact to access old Richmond Lunatic Asylum records? Feels cruel to type that! Just discovered my 3x Great Grandfather was admitted for trying to Commit Suicide in 1887, and I'd love to know more to add any details to my tree. If someone could PM me, I'd really appreciate it!

    Hi Sonia,

I'm not sure how far back the records go but I will send you a PM with details for the HSE contact that I have.

If the HSE are no help, it might be worth contacting the National Archives and requesting any documentation that they might have under Freedom Of Information. I got prison records for my great grandfather from them.

Hello! I feel like it may be a long shot but worth a try. I emailed Grangegorman and National Archives just in the last hour and I probably won't hear back until June, with everything going on, but I don't mind.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Looking forward to your PM!

No problem. The HSE took a week or two to reply to me. The National Archives took forever to reply.

Good luck and I hope you will find some good info!

Since trying to commit suicide was a crime, it is possible that he was transferred to Grangegorman from a prison, so Irish Prison Registers 1790-1924 on findmypast might have some information. I found a record for my great-great-grandaunt there, headed Grangegorman Female Prison Registry of Lunatics Committed.

Thanks for that, I actually found a prison record with his name on it just last week, and his sentencing to Richmond. Then I checked his name in newspapers and he was mentioned twice. It made me so sad, and seeing as he was a military man his whole life, unsurprising that he suffered so much. My mother and I would love to find his grave and leave some flowers, that's why we'd love to get our hands on his records.

Did you happen to get your great grand Aunt's records from Grangegorman?

No, just the burial record from Mount Jerome Cemetery giving her address as Richmond Lunatic Asylum. I couldn't find a death certificate but the name is unmistakable.

Does anyone have any recent information or updates on obtaining Grangegorman information? I'm trying to get my Grandmother's records from the 1950's. My mum was her only child and I'm helping her to do it. I have sent all the next of kin info and relevant certs to HSE and am waiting on a reply. The small print says they still do not have to give you any information even if you provide everything they ask for. Fingers crossed.

They are very behind. I sent documentation for a client at the beginning of 2020 and it took almost a year, which they blamed on Covid but I suspect it was only partially to blame.
