Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Bought 2 apple trees in Lidl in February and planted straight away. One didn't make it thanks to an overzealous puppy among other reasons but tree no. 2 has thrived and being a novice in the garden, these flowers were a nice surprise to me! :)

This is my garden as of today. Germinating some tomato seeds there on the bottom right, got my lavender and mint in the pots on either side. There's parsley, cucumber and red pepper along the ledge. Then along the wall of the bed I've planted broccoli, which are just shoots at the moment. The tomato plant and passiflora are next to the wooden frame.

Just out of shot are my leek bed, spinach and lettuce leaves and carrots. I'm new to this gardening thing and I'm completely hooked!

I love Californian Poppies. They'd actually look gorgeous in your dark round planters to either side!

Mine are self seeding but they decided to creep along the ground rather than upwards this year.

Here are some more from this Summer, this one is Tigridia pavonia or Tiger flower. In general it does not survive the winter in Ireland so dig it up later on and store indoors over winter or else treat it as an annual, which is what I tend to do. The flower only lasts from 8AM to 5PM, but each plant produces 3 flowers over the course of the following days.

    tiger03_zpshue7seff.jpg

The next on is Cichorium intybus or common chicory. The leaves look like dandelions during the spring and the plant will grow 5' to 6' high producing a mas of blue flowers over several weeks. I believe you can roast the root from this one and use it as a coffee substitute.

I recently installed a small pond (Blagdon Dragonfly 250 lt.) in one corner of my garden. Here's how it turned out:

    24746718459_cc837f9264_c.jpg

Looking like a bomb has just hit:

    25114492395_2717756df4_c.jpg

After much head scratching and a lot of tweaking, I managed to get the edge looking like this:

Planting around the edge of the pond:

    25114684675_b0f2e0b40e_c.jpg

The planting finished and the water is in the pond (the water level looks fine):

    24747126829_dd8647579f_c.jpg

    25021556341_e18fa03742_c.jpg

Plants used around the edge of the pond include: Pachysandra, Mahonia eurybracteata 'Soft Caress', Choisya ternata 'Aztec Gold', Rhododendron micranthum, Helianthemum 'Wisley Pink', Campanula, Persicaria, Erodium 'Bishop's Form', Thymus coccineus and Erica x darleyensis 'Kramer's Red' (I'm not sure the Erica looks okay where it is and may move it elsewhere).
The small tree with Hotei sitting underneath is an Acer palmatum dissectum 'Viridis' which should look lovely by the pond when it's in leaf again.

Come the end of March or early April, I plan to put miniature Water Lilies in the pond and some nice marginals around the inner edge.

    Stag's Horn or Sumac.

To be honest it can be very invasive and put suckers up throughout a lawn.

It's actually the green flower/plant in the bottom right hand corner with the small pink flowers I was asking about. I Googled the Sumac and think that's the tree in the middle?

That's Japanese Anemone, Loire. Also invasive as hell by root spread or even by seed. It'll keep you fit, pulling out. I love both it and the Stag's Horn Sumach but boy do they challenge you to keep them in check.

Anemone bulbs are not the same as Japanese anemone. "Normal" anemones are not as invasive, tough or thuggish as their Japanese namesakes :) but the Japanese are great if you have a difficult or inaccessible area that wont grow much else. Plant a few and leave them to their devices, but as Dubl07 says if they get loose in a mixed bed etc you'll be pulling them forever!

First post in this thread, looks like the same tree from 2 different seasons.

I assume it's down to shelter being provided to the one of the left?

No, I just bought the pre-formed pond on its own (I think it cost about E 100). You'll need to purchase a pump separately. I don't have fish in it, just oxygenating plants, marginals and dwarf Water Lilies.
