This thread has gone a bit silent. i was listening to a bit of Mr Sharp several weeks ago on bbc five live and in the space of 30 minutes he flew through several topics and his guest were well versed on the topics and Rhod was alway well read on the topics. It was so refreshing to listen to. It just further shows how unprepared the rte 1 people are in general.

I'm currently listening to bbc radio 2 and sara cox from earlier and it's good music played from the 80's with no ****e talk from presenters who rabbit on instead of playing the songs.

I don't think it would matter too much what RTE put on between 1 am and 5 am. How many of that audience are looking for an Up All Night type of output?

Rhod Sharp has the advantage of being in America, so he doesn't have to actually stay up all night to broadcast. Would RTE let current affairs presenters go to America to do programmes for night owls?
I think you may have misunderstood what I meant there friend. I wasn't saying RTÉ should put that output on during the night like the BBC do. I was making the point that the BBC put out content that is more polished than RTE in the graveyard shift than rte do during the day.

I was travelling back to Dublin this evening listening to BBC R1 live from Creamfields and Tony Blackburn on BBC R2. Really enjoyable. Switched to 2FM where it was a dull sports show, then Radio One where they discussed new music from Shane Filan and Queen of the Stone Ages (honestly). We're so badly served by radio here. Dullness personified.

The BBC radio 2 jingles from 2015. I love the different ways they sing 88 to 91fm bbc radio 2, and yet you still know it's the beeb you're listening to.
agreed, but when the jingle says BBC RADIO 2, its kind of a give away :)

Gotta love BBC RADIO 2. I've lost count of the number of artists I've been introduced to over the years. From Eva Cassidy to Nora Jones, from Amy Winehouse to Elbow, they're always introducing us to new international artists, usually several weeks before other stations pick them up.

Wouldn't know music well enough to be on Counterpoint. It's good fun, though.

Radio 2 is excellent! Great music, great variety of presenters. Quality radio that's light years ahead of anything in Ireland.

Didn't Ryan Tubridy do some fill in's for Radio 2 presenters over the years.

Imagine switching on Ken Bruce to get a away from the Irish presenters to find.. Oh No!

He did , looks like he'll be staying here for a while and keeping the head down , reality can be chastening .

In which case dullness was literally personified when Shane was given half an hour this morning on BBC R2 to warble his ditties live to our nations.

BBC radio 1 vintage starts at 6am this morning. At 6:55am tony Blackburn will recreate his first breakfast show in full this morning. Wonderful radio.

Listening all morning to it, absolutely superb stuff. Must have been great back in 67 when this started. Shows how deprived we are here with rtes offering.

Three BBC male radio presenters have "agreed"(I say agreed in brackets because it seems not all three of the six were happy with it). Jeremy vine of BBC radio 2, Nicky Campbell of BBC radio 5 live breakfast, and John humpries of BBC radio 4 will be taking put cuts.

I see that Emma Barnett is going on maternity leave from her BBC Radio 5 live show and I've seen Anna Foster is going to be filling in for her. Is that Anna Foster from drive ?

I was looking at the numbers for the radio 1 breakfast show which it's fair to say is the flagship show of radio 1 and the BBC radio operation as whole. I see that late last year that the listenership under nick grimshaw(who I'm sure is a nice guy) have fallen to their lowest numbers since official recording in 1992 and unofficially the lowest ever.

Personally I've never taken to the current presenter compared to Christopher moyles who I loved. He was like ray foley so it's clear why I liked him.

I've starting listening to BBC radio 2 due to IMO Irish radio having gotten worse.

The BBC radio app that is now available in Ireland helps a lot.

My question is what BBC radio station do other members of the radio forum listen ?

I've really liked Sara cox covering for Chris evans this week on breakfast. She has a very cheerful demenor at 6am in the morning.

And I listened to Chris moyles when he was of that parish. Grimmy not so much.

Scott mills is very good also.

In order to give nick grimshaw a far shor I relistened to his show from Friday in full. Jesus he doesn't half name drop. I mean fair enough as a BBC radio 1 DJ you probably know famous people but I'd prefer to not hear that.

The BBC radio 2 breakfast show is superbly better than it's radio 1 rival. Sara cox is a joy to listen to and I only listen to bbc radio 2 in the mornings when covers for Chris Evans.

Sometimes I tune into BBC4's Today on the way home from night shift.
    Quality show.

What I especially like about BBC radio is the lack of adverts you get on Irish radio.

BBC radio 4 is what rte radio 1 should be. Yeah the no ads on the bbc showed me how many there are on rte.

It is the same Anna foster does drive on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Sarah Brett who hosts the afteronn show would take over and Nihal be doing it solo.

that is next monday don't know about the rest of week

Love BBC radio, it's in a class of its own. The quality of interviews, variety of shows & interviewers actually listen to their guest

Radio 4 is the best english language talk radio station on earth, I love NPR stations but R4 is unbeatable. I also love BBC 6 Music especially Lauren Laverne's show.

Radio 4 has new Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy next Thursday at 6.30pm, based on original scripts from Douglas Adams and newer plotlines from Eoin Colfer's book commissioned by Adams in 2001

Listened to twenty minutes of today on radio 4 this morning. Sweet jaysus it's good stuff and also caught fifteen minutes of the world at one on the same channel. It's just so polished and well done.

Bbc6Music for me when I can. Lauren LaVern and Radcliffe and Maconi when in work. Marc Riley/Gideon Coe in the evening when I get a chance.

Listen to BBC 4 every morning before work, then Pat Kenny in work and some BBC 6 Music on way home.

I'm not sure about the fact that Jo Whiley is sharing the drivetime show with Simon Mayo. That was a programme that seemed to be working perfectly well as it was. The changes are part of a drive by Radio 2 to add more female voices
and that must be the compromise...to add a female voice to the most popular programme.

Relive your teenage years from the mid to late 1970s, with Pick of the Pops, saturdays, R2 1pm. The music you would have listened to on pirate radio and watching TOTP

yes...there was a need for a female in the radio 2 daytime line up...but this is a strange partnership at this stage of their careers and a strange it ending at 8pm, like a pairing that would happen in the mid 90s on radio 1.
i'm sure this drivetime show will be whiley's soon anyway and mayo will move to weekdays radio 6 or weekends on radio 2, or back to radio 5.

not sure if mayo was tongue in cheek saying this:

I’ve been a regular listener to Mayo’s show, and have listened this week.

    It’s terrible, car crash stuff.

No chemistry between them, Mayo sounds bored out of his mind, guests taking up far, far too much time, fcuking badges, Whiley dominating the mic, and it all just sounds so dreary.

I regularly had his show on but I won’t be tuning in for the foreseeable. Maybe in a while when they’ve settled down a bit. What used to be light and breezy radio is now drab and dull.

Couldn't agree more. It was always going to be difficult to shoe horn Jo Wiley into an existing slot, but all the joi de vivre seems to be gone out of it. And what happened Simon's original companion Mr Mosh (on Wednesday's at least)?

I listen to Huey Morgan’s R2 show on the BBC radio player, whose programme goes out from 4-6am on Saturday. Fantastic music.

Best of luck to Nick and the new guy in August.

The reason for departing breakfast does seem a bit weak though.

Greg James is far far better than nick grimshaw. He will do far better than grimmy ever did.

Yeah being too tired is a weak reason. I mean it's the fecking BBC radio 1 breakfast show. I wouldn't care how tired I'd be, I'd love to be doing it.

What I would have done was put Scott Mills on breakfast, kept Greg on Drivetime, and put Grimmy on 1-4. Scott would have been the best choice; unfortunately it's becoming increasingly unlikely he'll ever get the breakfast show.

I think Grimmy will go when his contract is up next year, maybe a year on drive before Matt and Mollie, or maybe Jordan North, take over.

Either Greg or Scott should have taken over from Sir Christopher of Moyles when he left. Yeah Scott is 41 or thereabouts so it's probably gone even though he's one of the best they have. For a station that targets young people not alot of their on air presenters are in the target audience. Is mollie the mollie king out of the Saturdays ?

Yeah I've heard about this Jordan North lad so he's clearly one for the future.
I did see someone say that Grimmy would move to Radio 2 at some point. I mean imagine him on Radio 2, it would be a disaster IMO.

Listening to radio 2 and Tony Blackburn's golden Hour and it's gone from the Friends theme song( I can't remember the bands name) to the Supremes in a few songs and I've only heard one link. I mean it makes you really wonder why I still try to listen to some Irish radio.
