this easterly will have to get a good bit colder if anywhere stands a chance of seeing lying snow lasting thoughtout the day, at the moment as soon as the snow stops falling it melts rapidly. We really do need temperatures to stay at 1c maximum throughout the day to pevent any major thawing and i dont think they are gonna stay that low especially if the sun comes out.

Is it gonna get alot colder with this easterly or is this as cold as its gonna get during daytime?

It's likely to get 2 or 3 degree's colder than currently I think.

Remember this is not the cold air believe it or not.

So you are talking by wenesday of temps potentially 1 or 2 c at their max in the East and colder during snow showers.
Its close to march so the sun when out will thaw lying snow but the athmosphere will be plenty cold enough to ensure the showers are of hail or snow.
I'm expecting the best action through tuesday night wenesday and thursday as thats when the air sourced over western Russia will be here and thats when it will be causing a heavy build up of showers over the Irish sea.

Again it will be a hit or miss as it will be a showery pattern.
Some will get a lot and some might get none.
But you must be nearish the East coast for action.

Very heavy snow here again now just west of Arklow and this is a shower in off the Sea.
I can see the white hills to my west it should be with them shortly-they are going to get hammered out of this given whats falling here :D

Bigger flakes and heavier snow now. Seems to be getting heavier as time goes on. Wonder how long it will last.

Temps are currently at 2C with a DP of 2c also - Is this not bad for snow fall? Do DPs not have to be below 0C for a good chance of snow, particularly lying snow. Earthman, do you reckon DPs (and temps) will fall as the day progreses? There was a light/moderate shower about 15 mins ago which lasted about 3 minutes. Consisted or rain with a bit of sleet and the odd snow flake. Snow line in Howth is rising now, snow line up to about 250 ft. If anyone is interested, I can put a camera on my window sill pointing towards Howth hill and I can post snapshots every hour or so so people can get an idea of where the snow line is. ANyone interested in that idea? Oh, a few showers now beginning to move in off the sea now - one to my northeast and one to the southeast.

The wind is due east here now so I think the bottom end of that front which is off southwest wales is going to head this way so potentially some more wet snow on and off in south Leinster for a while from that.

Given that the stuff coming in off the sea here now is of snow with mixed hail pellets,I'm increasingly thinking that whats served up from the sea when the air gets very much colder from tomorrow will be a winter wonderland...

And Irish1 I do think it will wing its way to tullow, it just might be near exhausted by then.

Chances of snow cover are high this week in coastal counties from Louth to Wexford.

normal circumatances are not applying here , by normal i mean what we have had to put up with for more than a decade.

Dewpoints and Temps will drop from this evening.
I actually dont have my equipment up and running here yet so I'm working off a prehistoric thermometer but a reliable one.

I notice mothmans dp is 1.2 with a temp of 2.2, that combined with an increasingly colder athmosphere ( the infamous by now 528 dam line ) will tend things to snow as the evening progresses.
It's already doing that down here.

Dry here again now-there was a lot of hail among the flakes in that last snow shower which is indicative of it getting colder.
Temp is about 1.5 here now - plenty cold enough for snow in this feed ( clearly :D )

Give it time that will change :)

It was bound to be near zero once snow was falling thats always the case and a rise when it stops.
Especially since the really cold air is not here yet.
    But its on its way.
from the NRA Arklow bypass at 203 reflecting that heavy snowshower we just had.
Again the NRA site says rain because it records all precipitation as rain, its incapable of distinguishing snow.

I'm off now guys-back to work -ye will have w.check back here shortly after 4 no doubt in full ramp mode :D

Snow all thawed away here in South Laois. The hills around are white above say 150 to 200m.

    Temperature of 2.2c. Cloudy.

@kleefar: I had that sunshine spell around an hour ago, it lasted for 20 minutes or so.

This corresponds to about 120m - It was almost down to sea level about 2 hours ago

Looking NE around the same time:

Not really looking too good at the moment so!

Drats, that show shower got cought up over the Castlecomer Pleatau. Very overcast here, quite dark. Still 1.9c.

    I think I'll go for a drive soon! :D

    Must find the digital camera...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,323 ✭✭✭highdef

Well it's very sunny now here on the east coast - All the snow on Howth has now melted. Blue skies and fluffy clouds. The nearest thing to a shower is this thing to the north which is not coming this way.

If anything appears to be approaching in the next while, I'll post a pic. Will be off to the gym around six though so something better happen in the next 90 mins!!!

Apologies for the tiny pics I'm posting but the cable for the stills camera is missing so I am taking stills with a video camera

Were ya out in the hail :D (suspects something else caused your sore head...)

We are into mostly cloudy skies with some blue patches here now with sleety showers - a mix of hail, rain and wet snow in them. They come in throw a few drops of sleety rain, then big flakes of snow and then hail all of them now are coming in off the sea.

Still cloudy and quite dark here... now 1.7c

And now begins a synoptic we havent seen in years :D

Already at this early stage showers hugging the coasts of south
Dublin and Wicklow expect to see some colours in the Irish sea
overnight heading ashore, well unstable at 1011hpa.

Nice puffy cumulus heading in the wrong direction :D

Only a matter of time until some juicy showers beef up,
as the very cold airmass has some fun with the high
SST's in the Irish sea :D

If I don't get to build a snowman this week I'm going to start a petition in feedback to change Weathercheck's name to 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'.

Present indications suggest the cold spell is likely to last through
the weekend and possibly beyond :D

Yes and come wenesday/Thursday the air will be colder still,I'll be disappointed if that doesnt bring some even more huge showers to bear on the coast from the Irish Sea-in theory it should-provided pressure doesnt rise however.

Big mass of cloud pushing in from Holland, towards E England. Will that hit here tomorrow morning???

Could be interesting if it arrives DURING or AFTER our overnight frost...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

What a beautiful skyline the clouds towering high i's say there's
some CB's already with snow shower to my north and big massive
clouds bobbing in off the sea, would be surprised if many didnt
see a decent dollop of snow tonight :D

Having problems getting through on dial-up, so updates to website are unreliable.

Now +4C with -1.5C dewpoint, with grass temp down to +1.1C

Just had a bit of sunshine.

Most of snow has melted with snowline up to about 250m.

From here I can see a lot of snow from Ballycoog in co wicklow right across to kilenerin in North Wexford-that suggests a snow line of about 500ft.
From there across is very white.
Croghan looks like mt everest :D

I can concur with w.check there are some huge towers of clouds bubbling up and blowing in from the Irish sea suggesting that the cold air is doing its work.
Expect fun in the coming days and nights down along the Eastern seaboard :)

showers to pile on in :D

I have my eys on one forming north of wales, could
be a beast when she gets here although i most
    likely will be wrong :o:D;)

And I'll concur with that. It is lower than the 250m I mentioned, perhaps 180m

Valentia is still at 8C, with Cork Airport at 1C

Showers in the SE. Wind is now NE nearly everywhere.

ive looked at more charts and it looks like getting alot colder from tonight till thursday then milder again for the weekend but still cold, however from tuesday 3rd march there seems to be really bitterly cold weather from sweden heading its way back here with blues and purple colours not far off? could this be another cold snap in the making to give us proper snow during first week or two of march? http://www2.wetter3.de/animation.html

weathercheck, that shower your talking about, any chance of that hitting meath or am i do far north?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,951 ✭✭✭✭Villain

Cold in Carlow, wishing and hoping that a few showers will this far inland, oh how I would love to wake to a carpet of snow.

Weathercheck, at this stage maybe you could give us the overall outlook for the next 3 days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

    O.K i'll give it a go..

Showers affecting eastern areas through this evening and tonight
leaving 2-3cm's of snow in some areas.
Tuesday will see more snow showers affecting the east through
the day perking up in the morning and spreading further inland.
Wednesday looks likely to be the snowiest day early morning
a band of snow will push in from the east and cross the country.
Later in the day another trough will affect the east.

Overall eastern coounties could have upto 10cm's lying on Wednesday
although if the sun comes out a rapid thaw will commence. :)

More later when i watch this vicious looking shower..

Gonzo it's heading for Dublin possibly south meath but probably not.

It could land anywhere between south Meath and north Wicklow :)
